It was so nice to see such a positive review of this delightful little car. I live in the U.S (Florida) and bought my Scion IQ in 2013--as soon as it was available to buy here. Mine is "hot lava" color and I find it fun to drive and so easy to park. Plus it takes up so little room in our garage that I have plenty of space for our two bikes and there's still plenty of room to move around. I also use it as a two seater and was amazed to find that Weathertech actually had molded floor mats available so I snapped up a pair a little over a year ago. I only have 37+k miles on it so plan to keep it many more years. In fact for my cars 10th birthday I'm going to treat it to a complete detailing plus I'm considering getting a ceramic coating applied as well. PS: I get about 39 mpg when driving longer distances (not that often obviously) and 32 to 34 mpg in local driving despite having a bit of a lead foot. Using the AC probably affects the mileage as well.

Scion iQ is the single most reliable and safe micro-sub-compact vehicles on the market and the only Japanese Kei car made by Toyota readily available in the US.*

  • @JosephWall117

Good review. I've driven the American version for 7 years, almost 300k miles. It's a fantastic car, my only regret is not purchasing two when they were cheaper and more easily available. The American version is branded as Scion and actually only comes with the 1.3l engine and a CVT, no smaller engine or manual gearbox option. That said, I really like the CVT, in eco mode it does exactly what I need it to do while averaging around 40mpg between city and highway driving, and that's very good for a non-hybrid American car of its' age. It's also had a relatively cheap maintenance cost and far exceeds the resale value of any other small cheap car made during its' production. I'm biased as hell because I like things that are small, efficient, and well-engineered, so I overlook a lot of the flaws, but the flaws that are there are easily overlooked by anyone else I've shown the car to. The height of the seats is a good thing here in the states since everyone drives trucks and SUVs, I need to be as high up as possible, but I can understand not liking the weird seating position. Overall I'd recommend it to anyone apart from the fact that they're discontinued, take special tires ($200+ each), and can only really comfortably seat two. For a single commuter though, best purchase I've ever made.

I must be one of the few people who find the IQ seats really comfy--especially when compared to some of the newer cars. But being only 5'4" tall probably accounts for some of that. Living in Florida the only thing I find problematic is trying to merge into traffic with the AC going--it just doesn't work.. The AC sucks too much power so that when you floor the gas pedal there's a significant delay. To accommodate this "flaw", I've developed a habit of hitting the AC button off, merge with traffic and then pop it back on again. It's become second nature so not really an issue. The only feature I wish it had is a back-up camera. I've seen some aftermarket ones that work by using a smart phone as the screen but don't know if/how that would work.

Great and well structured video.👍 Love my IQ. However the headlights really suck. Really difficult to drive on unlit roads, my Vauxhall Rascal does better with filament bulbs. Also can be quite tiring at night as you get drowned by those using very bright LED headlamps. I know its a city car, but this is the car's biggest flaw in my opinion. Yep, cleaned the UV degredation off the headlamps, and bulbs replaced. Vehicle kept outside unfortunately, 2009 plate.🇬🇧👍

My 2012 IQ is a Scion. I wasn't aware that Toyota made any with a Toyota emblem on them back then. Mine has a 16 valve 4 cylinder, and even after 11 years, you have to put your hand on it to even know it's running. And no visible exhaust pipes from the rear. AND it gets about 45 MPG.

Not the worst first car, when my mother switched cars, she deemed that it was not worth the trouble to sell it (broken ac, peeling paint, broken aux) so she gifted it to me hah, after 3 years of sitting it needs a bit of work (should have gotten the license 3 years ago) but still. Half leather seats, 3 cyl manual. Half white, half primer gray. I like it, truly a "nugget" as a certain australian youtuber would say

I wonder if the rear seats would have been more useable if mounted sideways (facing each other, of course) with a shared footwell. Not sure about safety regs with this setup. Or add a 3-seater option, with the 3rd seat mounted either a) in the center and facing forward, or b) mounted sideways. The space gained by losing the 4th seat becomes useable storage with a bit less compromise. Honestly, other than some safety considerations (e.g., airbag placement), the ideal solution may have been to sell the car as a 4-seater with the necessary hardware in place so that the owner could EASILY switch the car to a 3-seater as required. Frankly, given the limited cargo capacity, those rear seats should have been designed so that they could easily be removed for additional storage when needed. Flexibility, what more do you need in an affordable, well built, and reliable commuter car!

Had a 1.0L IQ for 3 years, we can get 62MPG on a run, normally well over 52MPG round town. Comfortable enough to drive 2 up to Barcelona and back in two days each way. Great little car, but they do have some specific faults. 09's need a CAT upgrade to stop hesitation (Toyota recall but some were missed), electric windows break, front struts knock and leak, paint falls off (also a recall) - if you get one that's been fixed it will last you years and cost pennies to run.

I want to buy a mini car for tight city parking. I already own a Honda Jazz, but I can't fit it into hmm... irregular parking spaces. I am considering a Smart fortwo, which is ideal size wise. But the IQ is cheaper and probably a better ride. What are your experiences people with parking in historical city centers? I see that it has a great turning cycle, but it is 30 cm longer than the Smart. On the other hand, it's one meter shorter than my Jazz. Advice is appreciated!

I looked and drove both the Smart for two and the IQ before settling on the IQ. The seating in the IQ is superior--it feels like a seat in a larger car. The Smart for two that I tried had me sitting with my legs going straight out in from on me (no bend at the knees). Also the wider stance of the IQ makes for a much more stable ride especially if you are on a highway with cross winds.

I'm a huge fan of the IQ but I have to take issue with your claim that it can go anywhere. It can't. You just get stuck in traffic jams like any other car. A 'go anywhere' vehicle is a scooter or motorbike. Being able to filter past queues opens the door to freedom on the roads. All cars are slaves to traffic jams I'm afraid.
