2011 Mini Countryman - "And arose such a clatter." Engine death rattle or minor problem?

In this video we take a look at a 2011 Mini Countryman I recently purchased. The engine has a terrible rattle that sounds a bit like a rod knock. I knew some of the history of this car before buying and it has been making this sound for 6 months and there is no debris in the oil. Maybe I’ll get lucky and it will be a minor problem?

Great video! I just bought a 2011 Countryman and was wondering what that sound was. Now I know 😊

One thing I learn from watching your videos is patience! (And the right tools matter!) Enjoyed. Bravo!

It is kind of odd for the mechanic to say 'it's not coming from the engine', where is it coming from then? Perhaps an exhaust rattle? Mine did it continuously it was most noticeable at low RPMs. As I understand a timing chain issue is more noticeable when quickly decelerating you will get a rattle. If the chain, guides and tensioner have all be properly replaced then it would seem to be something else. I would certainly check the water pump pulley as it cracking is a common issue. I first took a peak at mine with a $20 USB borescope. It made it easy to have a look without the engine running and without needing to take things apart. The belt being worn can cause a similar sound.

Mine does almost the same sound, but it's intermitent and louder when the engine it's cold from what i noticed. The timing chain it's new and the mecanic told me the sound it's not coming from the engine, at least that's what he thinks. Yours made this sound continuously or stopped from time to time?

So, just for the record, you don't have to remove the headlight, nor the engine mount. You can do the whole thing from underneath. I'm sure it makes it easier to do that, but not required. There is a tool that makes getting the belt off easier, and ratcheting wrenches make quick work of the water pump pulley. Personally my trick is I remove the friction wheel (3 bolts) as I find it easier to get in there, but technically you don't have to.

Thanks for the feedback. I did not try to reach the belt tensioner from under the car. That is probably a really good option if you have it on a lift. Another issue I had with the water pump pulley was the length of the standard 10mm wrench. I ordered in a long set which arrived yesterday. I also picked up a 30mm crow's foot as I think that will make getting to the belt tensioner from the top much easier and not require removing the headlight. I also designed a tool to hold the water pump pully. I was not comfortable with the makeshift methods of holding it in place. I would not want it to come loose on me (or anyone) going down the road. If it works out, I'll do a video on it and release the design.

What a lousy design. And the mechanic that replaced my timing belt because it is stretched showed me all these worn out parts that you have replaced in your video. So he just replaced him and I have to worry about it at least for a few more thousand miles. What a stupid car it was my wife’s and she loved it but she passed away from cancer so now I promised her I would keep it because we spent so freaking much money and time with it but I’m about to get rid of it regardless of my promise to my wife on her deathbed. Somethings just have to be done for the living to save my sanity again stupid car I must’ve spent $50,000 after interest and no repairs and I couldn’t get five grand for it probably they would just tell me that I needed to keep it because it’s not worth enough to even trade it in again stupid car have I said it enough? No, stupid car!

It is odd that once they fixed all the problems with this 'Prince' engine design they quit making it. The whole car is like that, a lot of good ideas that were never fully tested before production.
