    Thank you for making this video. You saved me lots of headache. I found the bottom seat cushion had 5 wires going to it. Two go to a heat sensor and I had no continuity through them. The bottom cushion wasn’t the problem though. The lumbar cushion had two breaks which I soldered. I made sure to cut the plastic bars on both cushions, thanks to the instructions you shared! I used zip-ties instead of hog rings. A pair of bent needle-nosed pliers were essential for that part. Blessings.

    @@joesdiy4260 HI Joe - Sorry I didn't see your reply to my msg until now. Its cold here now, and wife is ANGRY I never did this project, and thought I refresh up on your steps. She still just wants to buy a cigarette lighter heating element, but I like a challenge! haha. I"m guessing a repair at the dealer would be $400-$600 - all labor costs. My dealer won't quote any prices over the phone - you have to 'bring it in' for them to 'examine.' I repaired my sliding door cable motor. That was an ugly job, and common problem w/ the odysseys. I"m sure that would have been $1100 or so at the dealer! Anyway - once again - great video - very well done... one of the best I've ever seen on an instructional level, and very professional. Keep up the great work.

    Great video with so much detail. After watching it though I know it’s too technical for me to do and too expensive to pay someone to do so I will be buying a heated seat pad that plugs into the cigarette lighter for a lot less money and headache of trying to take my seat out and then put it all back together.

    Such a great video and really appreciate the detail you put into it. I’m having this same problem with my 2011 odyssey right now and debating if I want to go through doing all this myself. Watching the video I noticed you didn’t modify the top piece that tucks across and was just wondering why not that one also?

  • @joesdiy4260

    @joesdiy4260

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey KC, I really appreciate the kind words, it means a lot. I wish you the best of luck in performing this job. The reason why I didnt modify the top piece is because it doesn't hit the heating element as much as the lower piece that I modified. If you think about where the majority of the pressure on the seat back is. Its around the piece that damages the heating element. With you going in and out of the seat, resting your back on that part, then pushes that piece into the heating element more. Whereas the top row just doesn't get pushed in by your back as much.

    amazing video, sir! Subscribed. You explain everything so eloquently, yet easy to comprehend. I purchased the OEM parts to do this months before you made this video and had hoped it would be relatively easy, but it looks pretty intricate. Seeing as it's spring, I think I'm going to snooze on this for another 4-5 months as it looks like a huge PITA. How many hours do you think it took you? I wonder if the seat base heater (bun warmer 😎) is any easier to replace. I got both heating elements thinking I would just swap out both. I might have to add hog ring pliers to my obscure tool collection that I end up using once and never use again like my toe-kick saw!

It is really hard to say how long it took me since I was recording, I think if I wasn't recording, it would have probably taken me 4 hours. But I hope it takes you less time now, since you have this wonderful resource. Personally, I would focus on doing the continuity check on the seat back portion, that is the common issue with all these seats, I did not bother looking at the seat bottom. I was pretty slow about it but I took the seat in the house where it was warm and slowly took the trim off until I could swap the seat cushion off and swap it out. Maybe 2 hours start to finish. @@joesdiy4260 Between your filming (I’ve dabbled in it but I have to refilm too much based on sounding like a stuttering fool or whatever I’m shooting not coming out great) and you going for a replacement of the heating element alone to reuse the existing cushion would definitely make for a harder job. I have a ‘14 EXL and got a ‘16 or ‘17 cushion with good leather from an Elite to just chop and swap. Had I had to cut the hog rings then put it al together… yeah, that’s defiantly take a good deal more time and I could see it taking hours longer. For anyone that has any issues in their seat leather, I’d just replace the whole cushion that’s from a trim that has an element already installed. They were something like $250-300 from the Honda parts reselling sites new as memory serves, but I got mine from a part-out on eBay for around $100. You’re editing and putting each portion into seek-able chunk was a pro-move on your part. Few videos on here do that. I bet someone experienced could do the whole job inside an hour… but even if I just took the cushion to an automotive place and asked them to do it, I wouldn’t be surprised if they charged 2 hours at around $100-150/hour these days to do it. $500-600 (with a new cushion) is a lot of money. You might be ahead to try to do a reupholstery… but it wouldn’t touch the heating element and they’d still have to take the seat out and apart just as much to do that job. This is defiantly a huge money saving DITY that as bit of a pain in the butt to do but would be prohibitively expensive to pay to have done if you don’t source your own element/seat cushion and are paying for the labor. To be honest, I’d rather do struts than something like this again. I hate messing with interior trim pieces that are “tool less”. I try not to mess anything up and it makes for slow tedious work. As many times as I do it… it never gets better.

    @@charlesrivers1866 Thank you very much for all the kind words. Getting feedback like this really helps me make more videos and allows me to understand what works and what doesn't. For your issue, I would have also gone the route of getting a new seat back with leather and heating element. But I am too much of a cheep-skate / recycling weirdo, so I just replace what's needed and try to reuse as much as I can but that often bites me in the butt because it takes a lot longer. You are right about the price, both routes you go will be expensive ($400-600), with todays prices and wait times, you are better off trying to do it yourself. Now that I know how to do this, I can definitely do the job between 1 or 2 hours but since I have never done upholstery, it was a slow process for me and interiors are so different from model to model. Struts would be a quicker job and you are right, you do not need to deal with tool less plastics that cause you to move at a snails pace. Thanks again man and take care!

    Hello! I am sorry about my late response, thank you for viewing the video and for the sub, it really means a lot and it also means a lot that people get useful information from my videos. Now onto your questions: 1. With videoing and making sure, I had the shots all framed, I believe it took me 5 to 6 hours, but there are other people on here that stated it only took them 2 to 3 hours. So with the aid of this video, I would assume it only takes 2 to 3 hours. 2. Sadly, I do not know how this can relate to a 2003, I can assume that the trim is different and the wire routing of the air bag + heated seat element is different, as well as the side impact airbag. But other than that, I cannot think of many other differences but please do not quote me as I have never taken apart a 2003 seat. I really hope these answers help and guide you, good luck and be safe!
