2011 Bulding Bridges - Keynote

Dr. Joy DeGruy (Leary) is a nationally and internationally renowned researcher, educator, author, and presenter. Dr. Joy, as most know her, is an ambassador for healing and a voice for those who've struggled in search of the past, and continue to struggle through the present.
Dr. DeGruy holds a bachelor of science degree in communications, a master's degree in social work, a master's degree in psychology, and a Ph.D. in social work research. She is an assistant professor at Portland State University. She has written many articles and books, including Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome, which is the basis for her speech today. Her work suggests that centuries of slavery followed by systemic racism and oppression have resulted in multigenerational adaptive behaviors, some of which have been positive and reflective of resilience, and others that are detrimental and destructive. "Healing must occur on multiple levels, because the injury occurred on multiple levels.
The Building Bridges Conference, is a student-initiated, student-led diversity conference dedicated to addressing today's pressing global and social issues. The conference series aims to increase awareness and action through inspirational speakers supplemented by interactive workshops and action steps. This year's conference, I'm Not For Sale: Slavery Past and Present, will provide a rewarding opportunity to engage in important dialogue regarding slavery-from the historical slave trade to today's modern society.

The grace and truth of Dr. Joy's presentation helps me to pick my battles and present from a place of strength. Accepting the truth of who we are, what we have endured, and continuing to endure, indeed, makes us unique people. Yet we need to heal because both those who were taken away and those who stayed behind bear deep wounds. 🤔

The Haitian Sensation That whoever filmed this “purposely”‘ didn’t want to show them.. they started out showing the screens, then all of a sudden zoomed in. Very interesting... and it’s not the only lecture she’s done that this happened. I love her and her work. But apparently whoever (in some cases) does the filming gets a little sensitive about her slides.. (just my opinion) Nevertheless, I leave her lectures feeling educated, enlightened, fearless, and most of all Proud to be AFRICAN. 🤜🏾🤛🏾✊🏾

This woman's work is the anthesis of why black people are the way they are in America. Her work should get the highest honor for a body of work which is The Pulitzer Prize. All those in politics, teachers, doctors, and POLICE, among other professions must have this course. This course must be part of any and all educational curriculum. PHENOMINAL WORK/RESEARCH...MOST OF ALL WHAT A PHENOMINAL WOMAN. I tell you, after listening to her I have a huge understanding of who I am and why I have some of the hang-ups I have. I just thank GOD for this woman.

What I find interesting is that when she reads Numbers 12:9-12 it says verbatim: "9 The anger of the Lord burned against them, and he left them. 10 When the cloud lifted from above the tent, Miriam’s skin was leprous[a]-it became as white as snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease, 11 and he said to Moses, “Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed. 12 Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.” MIRIAM'S SKIN TURNED WHITE PER THE DISEASE OF LEPROSY!!!! Therefore the issue was not that Moses wife was black because they were ALL black. Just pointing that out! Maybe that's why her "Jewish" friend never discussed it with her...maybe they have something to hide.

I really enjoyed this teaching, but I was so amazed that so many people don’t seem to realize that not only was Moses wife black, but so was Moses. It was not because Moses wife was black, but because she was not an Israelite. But then as anyone that has spent any time in the Bible, knows that the Bible has been whited out and that that is why they didn’t show the part that was in the Bible were Moses was told to put his hand in his garment and when he took it out, it was white, then he was told to put it back in his garment and it was restored back to the way it was. For Moses was a man of color.

I wonder if this was an omission, not sure how you can completely miss exodus 4:6-7. Plus the obvious issue of him being pulled out of the Nile and pulled out by Egyptians the. Raised in their royalty until he realized his decency later, how else would he have even been consider in being apart of Egyptian royalty then.

Moses' wife was black because Moses and the other Israelites were all black. His sister wasn't upset because he married a black woman, his sister was upset because Moses did not marry an Israelite. They were not to intermingle with those who are not Israelites. Read Deuteronomy 28 you may recognize the people that she's talking about in this conference.

What was more ironic is toward the end she mentioned at a conference many Black people did not approve of her, or her work until white people did, and you know what this means, it means many of us are still enslaved in our hearts, minds and souls. This is indeed post traumatic slavery syndrome. Even with television Black people who supposed to be intelligent, believe everything white people tell them, and they need to be told what to do, and they need to watch tv to let white people lead them. It's a shame, and it almost make me shake my head.

This shouldn't even have been uploaded. It's useless without being able to see the slides! I stopped watching after 30 minutes and am going to watch a different version of this lecture, recorded by someone who isn't an idiot. As in the beginning of the video, it was possible to see both Dr. DeGruy and the slides well. There was no good reason to zoom in on her so much that her presentation was cut out. I feel like this lecture and presentation was intentionally sabotaged.

Yeah it's frustrating. You can find other recordings online of her giving similar lectures and they sometimes do better, e.g., in kzread.info/dash/bejne/dHuetcaaqZrMj5s.html

1:02:00 - 1:03:30 Just wow... There are so many "warrior cultures" that do disturbing things to their enemies. But many caucasian cultures live in a state of simultaneous denial and bloodlust. Are the drive towards violence and reproductive aggression a sign that people with these genetic traits were most rewarded and assisted in having many offspring in our war-focused tribes-turned-nations? Though of course the social forces repressing sexual and spiritual freedom among conquerors must also contribute to their madness, I certainly don't mean to sound reductionist.

i have just made some calculations , using slave labour starting in 1619 to 1865 , equal to 246 years of slavery ! , it is clear that the entire American south economy has its foundation on sweat and blood of our people. without mentioning those who were died during the passage at sea close to 4 million....(THIS MUST NOT BE FORGOTEN)

Moses and the rest were "Black" too. Exodus 4:5-7 [5]That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee. [6]And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow. [7]And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.

They were all black, Israelites were not to marry outside of the nation. It wasn't about her being black she was an Ethiopian. Exodus 4:6 Moses was asked to put his hand inside of his coat and when he bought it out it was leperous white as snow. So how can that be a miracle if he was already White? You don't see this part in the movie because it doesn't make sense and people will start to think and ask questions. Moses was a black man. Paul and Moses were both mistaken as an Egyptian. We all know Egyptians are black. they painted themselves as black as well as the people they enslaved.
