My 2010 Prius now has 382,000 miles on it! What a car. It's never had anything major go wrong with it (so far) just the usual stuff: tires, brakes, shocks, bulbs. I did also change all 4 coils and spark plugs a few years ago. And I also replaced the blower motor and the "clock spring" electrical contact for the steering wheel some time ago. All these repairs are easy. Just watch the KZread video FIRST.

I am a Toyota tech and a quick tip after taking the 3 clips off you pull the skid plate all the way back and you can clip it with one off the clips you took off so it can hold in place and be out off your way and for the guy that said that they tighten down his filter with a gun I hardly thought they did that we will get in trouble for doing that but trust me I run into filters being to tight everyday they just tend to tight up because the gasket gets stuck with the heat you can tap the metal part with a hammer and use a torque wrench it should come off easy hope it helps !

My 2011 Prius with 130xxx miles started consuming oil more than a quart every 1000 miles and only gets 30 avg mpg. Is this car worth saving? I am going to pull it apart to access the spark plugs and do a compression test, and I know that is easy, but I am thinking that the cost to replace, just for labor, is going to be a downer.

hell no. that's what dealers tell you so that you over use your oil and slowly add un-needed wear/tear to your vehicle. Even on FULL SYNTHETIC oil, every tech will recommend going no more than 5-6000 miles or 6 months between oil changes.

  • @dudleyfuddpucker7017

No, 10k is what Toyota tells you. Dealers tell you to change it more often so you pay for unnecessary oil and filters. With new synthetics and engine tolerances the 5-6k intervals is a holdover from 30 years ago. Many cars run 14-15k now and have shown an aggregate zero issues as a result.

thanks for the video, but 2 things - 1 you can hear the dry (non lubed) oring gasket squeeking and grinding as you tighten. put some fresh oil on it - it will tighten more smoothly and will allow the gasket to seat better. it will also be easier to remove. it's not a "preference" it's the correct way to do it. also 2 - hand tightening technically does not use a tool. it would be called tool tightening if that was the case.

I got a 2015 Prius Three and I noticed that the two small clips were missing, so I guess that the mechanics at the dealership were too lazy to put those back on... Also, the clip that was on there decided to break while I was trying to put it back on, so I'm just using a zip tie to hold it up there.

Pleiocen Eukaryote - Your 2012 shouldn't be any different from our 2011 Toyota Prius. The recommended oil change interval per Toyota is every 10k miles. As for the oil maintenance light, there is a setting that you can change it to turn on every 5k, 10k, or even longer. As per the factory, it should've turned on after 5k unless someone changed the settings. The Prius was driven for 10k before I changed it with that color. Did you bought your car brand new or was this pre-owned? when did you changed your oil? Thanks for the compliments :)

The wrench is much better than cap type as it has notches where they grip on the base of the filter.

Do NOT slide the gasket on oily as shown in this video. There is a very common and known issue with these filter housings that when you screw the housing back in, the gasket can shift out of the groove and down to the end of the housing. It will seal for days, or maybe weeks, then pop out of place and you'll lose all your oil. It happened on mine about 1,000 miles after an oil change; I got the "Low Oil Pressure" warning while on the highway and when I pulled over there was no oil left in the engine! The mechanic I took it to has seen lots of these and he recommends wiping the threads on the filter housing bone dry, sliding the gasket on dry, then applying a little oil on the receiving threads in the block. That way the gasket "slides" against receiving threads but has friction against the housing as you screw it in. My mistake was oiling the gasket directly. Never caused a problem in over 80,000 miles, but this one time it shifted and was disastrous.
