Bingo! And it almost happen again the very next year in Tennessee but got a break by Tennessee having 13 players on the field on the last play.

Man, I remember screaming "WHAT ARE THEY DOING??!!" right along with Verne. They had Ole Miss on their heels when Toliver caught it; they should've had a "just in case" play ready for such a situation.

Pretty sad that both Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson (in real time) immediately pointed out that the FG team needed to go out there and Les Miles didn't.

ill never forget this game... my chilhood was great with sports memories

Les Miles looks like he was being arrested after that decision not to kick a FG.

One of the great football games. The only time Ole Miss played LSU in Oxford while I attended Ole Miss. Great atmosphere, incredible finish!

This was my last game as a student. One of the best games I'd seen there. That last few minutes were ridiculous.

This game is a great example on why there needs to be a tenth second clock under 1 minute (just like in the NBA and NHL) in college football and the NFL. What if there was actually 1.4 seconds. You might be able to spike it with like 0.3 or 0.4 on the clock.

sean vogt No. That's on the coach to pay attention. You can't lose clock management awareness like that. No pass; those extra tenths would have made no difference here, anyway, the game would still be over.

NCAA added a rule in 2017 which requires three seconds on the clock to be able to legally spike the ball and get another play.

I remember watching this at the time as an LSU fan. I was only 8 so I didn't understand what was going on, but looking at it now, I get the feeling you have when your team has just lost a close game. awful

lol, I was 9. I didn't remember anything but ole miss winning. now, I realize this was probably one of the best ole miss games ever played in my lifetime.

Michael Kelley I was 6 & i think this was the game that made a name for Dexter McCluster

LSU recovered an onside kick in this game, and as of the 2023 season, has not recovered one since. 2:36:57

His last game he’d ever coached at LSU happen almost the same way. Clock management was his thing.

Les Miles lost that game with horrible clock management. He let 10-12 extra seconds run off before calling timeout with :09 left. Even if he only lets about 5 unnecessary seconds run off, they still would have 6 or 7 sec left after the catch, which is enough to spike it and kick the winning field goal.

Jefferson could have spiked it before the ole miss player got onside so there would be a penalty and an untimed down so they could kick a field goal

GBO627 But the thing is he didn't NEED to spike!!!! Just get your field goal unit out there or just shoot for the endzone. At minimum 30 seconds likely elapsed, which is plenty of time to get the play off when the whistle is blown for play to resume. I'm an UGA fan, but that wasn't fair to LSU, Les Miles screwed them over. Ridiculous.

The clock stops until the ball is spotted by the officials if the previous play resulted in a first down. It looked like the officials gave LSU every last second to get the ball off but still their QB was not under center at all.

After the 3rd and long play I was Yelling at the top of my lungs timeout!!!!! There was no excuse for letting the clock run down.Zero. Horrible coaching which represents les miles time at LSU. Could they have run the field goal team out? Maybe, maybe not but that wasn’t the problem. They lost this game after that 3rd down play waiting so long to call timeout. That was common sense and les miles showed numerous times that common sense wasn’t his strongest quality
