    GR-R-REAT Video! This video is a life saver for parents like me who can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars on maintenance and repairs. I recently purchased a 2012 Pilot with 174K miles so paying a shop hundreds of dollars if not thousands is a WIN. Moving on to the next video “how to replace brakes and rotors”

    Thanks for video on the vtm. 2 things I'd suggest. 1. Prefill your new oil filter with fresh oil before installing onto the vehicle to avoid dry start/more wear. 2. Keep jack under the vehicle just incase of a Jack stand failure. 30 years of wrenching on cars and I just recently had a jack stand failure and truck slam on the ground. 10 seconds I wouldve been killed. Keep jack under car as a 2nd peice of mind. Nice video.

    Absolutely, positively, yes - to both. I live in earthquake territory and was under a car at one point when the ground started moving. The stands didn't fail, but that's possibly *due* to having the jack as a redundant support (and since I had one of the wheels off, I would have been crushed). I was taught to release the vehicle to the stands completely, then give the vehicle a nudge (a push of 10 - 20 pounds of pressure) to make sure it was seated properly. Reposition the jack at some point where a failure of the stands would otherwise be trouble (eg. if the wheel is off, and the stands are under the frame, a good place for the jack might be under the exposed rotor). Once the cup of jack touches the contact point, apply only enough pressure so that some slight amount of the weight (by feel) is being supported by the jack, but NOT so much that any significant amount of weight is transferred out of the stands (so that they're doing their job).

    An old mechanics trick. I'm 71 years old, and bought my first vehicle when I was 14. I was taught by an old time away back then if you have a hard time loosening a bolt or nut try tightening it first. For some reason this breaks the hold on it and you then able to loosen said nut or Bolt. I can say that it works 50% of the time or perhaps more. Of course every situation is different so you're MMV. You should run the engine for a few minutes to get all of the gunk in suspension. Run it for 5 minutes or so, not too long or the oil will get too hot.

    I agree, for oil change only I'd just use the ramps under front wheels. Since in this instance I'm changing both oil and rear diff fluid, I decided to go with this configuration.

    No, you don't have to worry about the differential fluid on the front-wheel drive model, since those don't have the differential at the back.

  • @ills

    @ills

    5 жыл бұрын

    In case you have someone else flush transmission fluid on your Pilot, and you want to make sure they really do it, you can compare the color of the fluid before and after the flush. New transmission fluid is bright pink and the dipstick for transmission fluid is to the right of the oil fill cap on your engine. Also make sure they use Geniune Honda ATF DW-1 for the flush. I buy mine here: amzn.to/2WSybjs

    *Why don't you PREFILL the new filter before installation to help mitigate the time the engine runs without full oil pressure?*

  • @ills

    @ills

    3 жыл бұрын

    I started doing this now, after previous comments and suggestions on the video - figured that it won't hurt. I wasn't too concerned about it, because I am filling up the engine with new oil after draining the old one and before starting the engine and letting it idle for about 5 min, letting the oil run through all the oil channels. I also checked the Pilot's maintenance manual and the procedure for oil filter replacement does not call for prefilling the oil filter with new oil.

    On my generation Pilot you will know when to change the differential fluid if the maintenance minder comes up with code containing "6". In this instance, the code was "A16". You can look up what different codes mean here: www.paragonhonda.com/service/service-faq/maintenance-minder-codes/
