Put mt-90 in my 09 vibe, been a little quieter. Came here cause some say fill with a top bolt but I didn't see one on mine and filled on the side hole.

It should be the exact same transmission on that Vibe if it is equipped with the same 1.8 liter 2ZR-FE engine. Sometimes you may need to remove the black plastic splash shield out of the way to see the 24 mm fill plug. It should be there. There is always a fill and a drain plug on manual transmissions.

The specifications calls for any 75W gear oil as long as it is GL-4. 75W80 GL-4 works fine.

Do you know what years the Corolla/matrix require the low viscosity transmission fluid?

  • @moosemobileautorepair

I believe all Corolla and Matrix models used 75W90 GL-4 gear oil for their manual transmissions. If you have an automatic transmission then it would take either Toyota T-IV or WS transmission fluid. Toyota transitioned from the T-IV fluid to the WS fluid around 2007 and onwards. If you have an orange dipstick it takes the T-IV fluid. If you have a black dipstick then it would take the WS fluid. For the automatic transmissions that did not have a dipstick those transmissions use the Toyota WS fluid. This is not to be confused with the newer CVT transmissions. If I'm not mistaken Toyota never used low viscosity transmission fluid unless it is automatic transmission fluid you're talking about.

Wait so gl-5 purple royal purple gear oil isnt good for similar toyota transmission?

Correct. Toyota manual transmissions have brass synchronizers and so GL-5 gear oil contains high levels of sulphur/phosphorus which will react badly with brass and therefore will damage the brass synchronizers with time and will cause grinding and accelerated wear. GL-4 has about 1/2 of the levels of sulphur/phosphorus compared to GL-5 gear oil. Low levels of sulphur/phosphorus are OK for these transmissions so GL-4 is what's used. Brass is composed of copper and zinc metals.

@@moosemobileautorepair hmm ok I had recently did a gear oil change and got cute with the Royal purple Max q but it says on there safe for synchronizers manual transmissions that have synchronize is it safe and also it says where gl5 or four is recommended as well as non-corrosive to solve yellow metal's breast bronze copper but I'm going to get some redline mt90 either way cuz I do put a lot of heat on this trans

Yeah, I'm not too sure about the Royal Purple stuff, but I would just use a gear oil that only says GL-4 only and stick with that. That would be best - To drain the fluid and put the correct stuff in it. Red Line MT-90 should be fine if it meets the specifications. I personally just use what ever synthetic gear oil I can find in the market that says 75W90 GL-4 and I just put that in because it's hard to find sometimes in stores over here. Sometimes I may have to look around or order online somewhere to get it. Many years or eons ago when I was starting off as a mechanic I once put in the GL-5 stuff in one of my cars that took GL-4. It drove fine for a short while, but then I would get a 3rd gear grind almost every time. That was when I found out I put the wrong stuff and switched back to GL-4. Switching back helped a lot, but once in a while I occasionally got that 3rd gear grind, but not very often now. I can say a little damage has been done, but changing the fluid often helps every now and then. Drives and works normally now for the most part.
