I had the same error message, i was ready too give up on the car. Then decided too have a good look in the engine. I found the coil pack had 1 lead not plugged in properly. I pushed it in and been great since! Thanks for the video never knew you had that menu.

It's funny you said that because I just got in my 2008 c max this morning and went to start it. When I put the ignition on it said 'engine damage' I turned it off and on three times with the same result. So I got under the bonnet and looked at my fluids, all fine, looked under car for leaks, nope. So I pushed all the leads down to make sure they were all seated and got back in the car and switched the ignition back on and the message had gone. Started her up and she drove fine. Checked the self diagnosis for codes when I got back and found E510 & D900 but they aren't related to anything other than communication between pcm and other things that happen as common codes when you get a flat battery and have to replace (which I did last year). So I think my problem was same as yours.....a lead had popped out a bit lol.

Just had my clocks done by sancar in leicester, off ebay. £90. when I pushed the top right hand corner of them they lit up like a Christmas tree. Thx for your help

This is very useful. I'm pressing the set and reset button and turning the key to number 2 but the computer just goes straight into the common menu.

Cured my focus 2008 by removing dash display and sending off to pelican diagnostics who re soldered all contacts inside. Re fitted it and 8 months later (now) no more problems.running great.

Hi Dan, 4 years since you posted Traction control problem on 2008 focus. I have 2009 C-max auto. I kept getting Transmisdion malfunction/abs warning. It was caused by gear selector lever. So now when I select ‘D’, I nudge the lever forward a fraction, problem solved. It also happens in clutchless sequential mode…sometimes. The warning is gear will not change. So then I reselect Auto. Often I can go back to Sequential and it works fine.

Wow 4 years ago, the problem was the cluster (speedo,rev counter) needed resoldering. Apparently it’s a common fault on 2008 models,strange how it effects the performance of the car. £96 we’ll spent at a auto diagnostics garage. Hope this helps

did you find the problem? we drove out of the uk with our frod focus 2010 diesel car. the engine malfunction lights come on. we had a full filter and oil change about 1 month ago but my hubby thinks its the filter and oil agian ad the diesel aint the best were we are. when he just drove he had to stay in gear 4. did you manage to fix your problem? we can't seem to find a ford garage were we are. x

I believe its an instrument cluster issue. You need to take it out and resolver the part where the cable is connected to the back. Locate it and resolder about 20 points. It will work 100%after that.

@@garrettkelly5568 hi mate,....sou ds like the same issue. Does it go in limpmode, ie does the speed reduce as if its struggling to drive in full potential? If so, i would recommend that you slowly take the speedometer (instrument cluster off) out, its not diffat all, unplug it once you get the screws undone, and open it up. First ti.e its a bit tricky but you would need to get use to it because when i put mine back together the speed dials went all over the place because once you reinstall it and it gets power the dials reset and if you put them back incorrectly you will need to take it off again. Its easy once you install it back. Just remember where the dials move to and adjust bit by bit. You will need to be very patieas i did mine several times. Anyway back to the main bit, what you need to do is just resolder the existing points, no need to do anything else, just a fresh new solder so all points are reconnected. Hope this helps and let us know how you get on. 👍🏼

@@garrettkelly5568 once you have opened up the cluster you can clearly see the points on the board....its like a motherboard of a pc. You just focus on the bit where the plug you take off connects to, thats all....All the best.

@@garrettkelly5568 lol, i know exactly how u feel, but i too was a novice and saw someone solder it on a youtube video. Search for the video and attempt to solder a piece of an old broken mother board. Videos are out the on KZread then you would understand the theory better than my explanation. But if you really dont feel up to it then as you mentioned go to a friend or electrician. Id like you to save a few hundred quid. Keep us posted of the outcome 👍🏼

@@garrettkelly5568 its actually the speedometer the whole speed gague and rev the whole digital clock just behind the steering wheel. There is a plastic flap which you flick open and under it are 2 hex screws, you undo those and wiggle the whole component forward, its a bit tricky as steering is infront, but just lower the steering from the adjustment underneath and the whole speedometer pops out, as mentioned it is is awkward but thats how its done. Then the power which is like a rectangular plug is behind it attached which you need to also look at the edge as its clipped on but comes off with no issue. The first time is always awkward but just do that and then watch a video on the soldering....let me see if i can post a link on the next reply....hang tight.

As some comments already said don't over look the battery as if failing it can show problems you won't associate with the battery..I found this on my 2010 focus. It turned out it was a flaging battery which was only 3years old and after re,gapping the new spark plugs it was fine.. its worth bearing in mind that new spark plugs are not always correctly set and can be over looked even on diagnostic tests.

Trying changing the MAF sensor i did as it was running lumpy only cost me 25 pounds good luck mate

Hello mate i have a ford kuga 2010 with the same dash, mine is happening at the moment and its been diagnosed the DPF SENSOR or the DPF FILTER, so ordering a new sensor and go from there, about a year ago i was having alot of faults coming up on the dash and i had to get the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER repaired, hope this helps!!!

This happened to me yesterday, all that happened was that the battery was very low and I got engine, transmission error messages and engine wouldn't start. i have a engine malfunction warning come up on my 2008 focus aswell but on occasions my engine cuts out when slowing down at junctions and roundabouts could be once a week could be once aday but might not do it for a week or month had it diagnosed and it came back with a faulty ecu

After I got my engine replaced I had this keep happening gave it an oil change new filter and the malfunction light hasn’t come back since, soft engines notorious for these issues the 1.6 tdci

I have this same issue. To confirm that the instrument cluster is the issue, gently bang it with hand. If the fault disappeared then time to remove the cluster and reflow the solder joints in the main connector.

I have the same flashing on my 09 focus but I’ve gone through the test system as you did and have no DTC errors. But the same issues are prevalent with traction lights and it being a bit sluggish, any ideas what it may be given I’m not getting any errors

Hi , mine was the solder had eroded behind the instrument unit and needed resoldering .. my car was sluggish and the car was just playing up all the time and getting worse.. but it’s been fine for the last couple of years

I’ve just been pulling over and turning the engine on and off. Not ideal I know. Just had a service and mot. I think it’s due to flood water I’ve driven through… comments are good on the thread

Had an auto electrician out to it. It’s the cluster that’s the problem my circuit board was damaged and had to be repaired cost £80 plus £30 call out charged. No warning lights now and no limp mode

I had the same issue. In order to resolve it, I had to replace the problematic glow plugs. In my case, three out of four were completely burnt while the one was not functioning properly. The three burnt ones were not the cause of the issue as they were completely burnt. The one that was not functioning properly had to be replaced. After this, the message was completely gone.

@@properbuilders9095 in a car garage. They should check the sensors related to glow plugs or the glow plugs themselves. Even disconnect the sensors if required to avoid this annoying message.

It's a dry solder joint on the cluster.

I guys im having trouble with mine also, its a 2008 ford focus duratec 2.0l.. The car was standing for a few years (5 years) then recently i done the motor up.. The car drove perfect but then ot kept going into limp mode and the throttle stop working(electronic throttle) .. My friend said i must replace the throttle, but before i could it came right.. But later that day the speedo needle kept jumping but i thought it was nothing then the mext day the car refused to start the speedo needle jumped even more and the throttle stop working i checked the wiring but everything is fine.. Do you guys think a faulty cluster and cause this?? Please share your thoughts

Heĺlo, my car would go into limp mode within 5 minutes of driving. I would restart the car and it would be fine for another couple of minutes. The speedo would flicker and all the dials would drop to zero and then to full , when going down the motorway ( something you don't want to see at 70mph) my dash needed resoldering behind the clocks. Apparently its common on our cars £96 and a year of hassle free driving. Worth trying before you pay for other items

My rev meddle and speedometer kept dropping to zero and low on power, the diagnostic garage said press in the corner of the unit and see if there is a difference… If you know a good garage they will tell you straight away.

I had a d900 code then when I turned the engine on the engine management light turned on.

Its only happened to me once how long did u drive it before u had it sorted u reckon its still safe to drive with this issue

@@jason19893 the garage said if you press the top left or bottom right , the clocks start flickering , mine got me when I was on the motorway and the clocks started going from zero to full. Not something you want to see at that speed 😔 . Apparently it’s a common fault with the solder connection. You need a diagnostic garage.

Just bought a 2010 C-Max petrol. This has happened for the first time today after two wks of problem free driving. Was very cold and had only just rolled out of the drove when engine malfunction came up, the annoying beeping, no power. Simply turning engine on and off sorted it but now worried it will recur. Going to get the battery tested. Saw one comment that said cold is a factor. Do we agree?

Sorry about the late reply, my car had a lot of symptoms like sluggish behaviour and the dials would move on their own. At first turning it on and off worked but soon that didn’t work.. I took it to a diagnostic garage and he told me the solder on the instrument unit had worn away and needed resoldering.. a common fault on Ford focus and maybe on yours.. I could push one corner of the unit and the instruments would flicker.. cost me £96 and the cars been ok for years now.. hope this helps

You can have battery tested and it'll cost a lot less than new battery. Replacing it is waste of money if battery is good. Also battery charging can be easily tested from battery terminals with multimeter when engine is running and it should be 13-14.5 volts.

This happened to me this morning. Changed the battery and it's sorted now

Is your car going in to the limp mode/ error msg saying engine malfuntion/ reduced acceleration ? Mines is doing that and will come back on if I smack the topof the dash. getting the instruments cluster out this week and re-soldering the pins seems to be the issue with a lot of them

It could be the instrument clocks might need resoldering,, my car’s speedometer would bounce from 0-70mph on the motorway.. while going 70 !!..very bad.

Just get a proper Garage that understands can bus diagnostics to check the system using the correct equipment. This will work out the fault without guessing. Guessing will cist a fortune.

All you need to do is resolder the pins in the instrument cluster....search a KZread video and you can do it as a permanent fix. Looks hard but is easy and you need patience.

I have a 2008 1.8 tdi 91k miles and this has happened to me twice in the last 2 weeks!! Called the AA out who reset the codes the first time and car started - second time car started fine so no codes when plugged in. Dont know who to send the car too , as Ford dealer will be really expensive and not worth the expense... any help would be much appreciated 🙏

Your cluster (Rev counter and speedometer) needs resoldering. Apparently it’s common fault on 2008 models. I took mine to a garage that do auto diagnostics and he said straight away that was the problem, most of the feedback agrees.. cost around £90 cars been fine for years now. Hope this helps

Moin Khanani Mehmood hello, my problem was the solder connections behind the sped and rev counters. It kept going into safe mode(30mph) and clocks kept dropping to zero, a diagnostic garage,other garages just added to the problem and others have said the same.resoldered the clocks and I’ve had no problem for 2 or 3 years now. Apparently it’s a common fault on early Ford Focus. Hopes this helps

check the clocks next time the car starts going into limp mode , press the clocks on the left or right side. if the car response then its the connections are loose. hope this helps

Nic Geake hello I took my car to a garage and the fella said you can tell the connections need resoldering again, when you press either the top left or bottom right or left it will set the car off into limp mode or reset it. My cars fine now and doesn’t miss a beat. Hope this helps

@@Nufc1987 it's probably the cluster. There's a 16 pin canbus connection, there's dry joints on the connections clean them off with isopropyl and resolder them. I do electronics for a living so it's fine but it's worth paying someone if you don't want to cock it up

I have a genuine solution!!! I had to keep slapping the to of dash and it would go away for few hours. I had to take the dash out and have the back pannel re-soldered at local phone shop. Cost me £20.

Hi we’re getting this problem on our Ford Focus 2008 but engine light comes on sometimes too and getting code u9000 did this happen to you also

I think nearly all my lights started to display, thankfully it was only the solder connections behind the instruments.

Lou G hello the problem I found was the soldering behind clock unit needed resoldering, a common faulty on this model. Cars been great . Best £96 I’ve spent in a long time.

Can anyone help I have a focus zetec08 and my electrics went the other day on my key then today driving it I lost power I barely just got to park it up at side of street. The revs were shooting up and the engine malfunction message came up! Any help would be appreciated please..

If you restart the car does it work fine for a while before the problem ? My car did the same, the circuit board needs resoldering behind your Rev and speedometer. Common fault on our cars, mines been fine for years now cost £96 Hope this helps

Exact same thing happening in last few weeks with my 2011 focus 1.6 tdci zetec s. Only been happening ever since i got the alternator changed. Then this morning it flashed up, and was on a dual carriageway amd car was struggling to get up a minor hill in 5th and speed was reducing. Car wasn't pulling at all.

@@zoebusteed9765 surely got to be something to do with what mechanics done while changing alternator. Mines has been fine since i got told to take a spin on motorway keep it in 3rd and get it as fast as it goes to clear fuel filter. Had loads of smoke coming out exhaust before , but that's stopped aswell. Long may it continue.

Lol I was told the exact same thing. Only I don't have the confidence to do it on the motorway. I got fuel cleaner and spray for her, that seemed to fix the problem. But again it went on few weeks back, and then last night when I was coming back from work. Nightmare these cars

@@zoebusteed9765 even if you were to give it some good revs while driving about it should clear out filter, i done that aswell which seemed to help. Aye I've got some redex to put in fuel tank but need wait on fuel filter being delivered as got a safety cap. Brutal man only got my car in May and has to start playing up when the weather turns.

Try wynns stuff you can get it from halfords. I was also recommended TBF Thompson fuel cleaner, some fella my partner knows put it in his vectra, never any problems. Sure always the way plus coming up to Christmas 🙈

Please also check thermostat housing. Mine was leaking and caused the malfunction light to come on.

100% this problem is your rear clock cluster , the solder on the circuit board on 08 to Early 10 plate cars have this problem, over the years which your car gets older the rear solder on the board crumbles and the rear circuit board on your speedo/rev counter cluster puts false warnings on your screen as per the above video, Any garage will be just saying it’s this that & the other, just save your money in garage bills as 100% guaranteed it will be your cluster just needs re soldering, I had the same problem with my 09 plate Focus 1.6 Zetec , had the cluster re soldered and the cars been perfect the last 2 years

I just fixed mine.. To a degree of 98%. This was due to corrosion/oxide on the minus pole where it meets the fender. I removed and grinded it thoroughly. My theory was (after reading here) when I revved it/floored it the voltage wasent enough and that caused the random "Hi I am a slot machine in Vegas - behaviour".

Did you remove the cluster yourself? I have the same problem with my 2006 1.6 petrol. Don't want my pants pulling down at a garage.

mine was in limp mode i had the dpf chemically cleaned and that sorted it

Hello Apparently it’s common in 2008 Ford Focus models, the clocks needed resoldering. A garage near me did the job for £96 . The cars has been fine ever since.. hope this helps

@@dirtyandscratchd I had exactly the same issue. Got a garage to resolder the clocks and now works fine. Cost me £40 and was fixed in a day. If garage is close by then drive otherwise get it towed or recovered. Simple problem to fix once diagnosed

Mine kept going into limp home during hard acceleration, I changed the fuel filter and everything is OK

Attila limp home limits the engine to 3000rpm, I opened up my fuel filter(sealed can type) and I was shocked at how pathetic the area of the filtration was, no wonder it had a problem accelerating. My engine had done 100,000 miles and I presume the previous owner had not changed the filter because of the cost. I got one off ebay for£37 I believe OEM ones are very expensive.

Spark plugs were wet and ignition leads were changed and has been fine since. Well kind of. It’s happened twice since

Gary Edwards apparently that’s another common fault on this model mate, but it will be your clocks need resoldering.. my car is fine now £96 well spent

i have the same model and today tried starting it and it kept flashing “transmission malfunction” it wouldn’t start for 5/10mins then when it did i managed to get home whilst it was still flashing but i noticed the handbrake light was still on and every time i changed gear and put my foot on the pedal there was a 3/4 second delay before there was any power in acceleration is their anyone else who has had this problem or any help??? thanks

I have the same car I just left my car in the garage The Fluid that's pumped in To The Fuel when you refill has run out or low levels And Needs Topping Up ... This is related To DPF if It's an import ..hope this Helps Anyone

This problem is very random. I am sending the car in to a garage soon and will post any findings. I could list several senarios but they could lead you away from the main problem.

The instruments unit needed resoldering. The cars been fine for 4yrs now. Press the instruments cluster in the corners when the cars idling. Or do a diagnostic. Good luck

@@CBR600 been peeing down here & had to drive through a couple of floods - the dash threw a fit then settled on limited speed mode - but speed wasn't limited at all. Might not be anything to do with a sensor getting wet - might just be solder - my question to you is who did you get to do the solder repair? A Ford Garage or an independant (electrics speccialist?)?

Ford cmax changing alternator

I have exactly the same on my 09 focus, took it to ford and they said it was an instrument cluster failure and a gen module failure, quoted £1890 to fix Told them to fook right off

Update on mine, found a guy online that turned out to be local, took it round and he removed the cluster re soldered the joints , cleaned it and fitted it back in, all in about 30 min, £140 worked perfect ever since

I'm having similar problem on my ford focus Zetec, 2010 model, been driving like this for a while now, the engine malfunction and acceleration reduced sign comes up everytime i drive and the acceleration pedal goes a bit numb. Sorry about the late reply. My focus did the same, it would go limp and then fine but it gradually got worse.I took my focus to a auto diagnostic garage. Cost me £96 a few years back and it's been great ever since.the fella at the garage said it was a common fault on ford focus. Sometimes if you press the instrument unit in the corners the needles might flicker.. apparently the problem is the instrument unit needs resoldering .. hope this helps..

Crontorl cluster. Needs sending off and rebuild so to speak. Cost me £450 🤣
