My brakes blew today, started smelling something burning, I didn’t think anything of it because there was construction around my area. Eventually the cart started slowing down and all power was lost, and I was stranded in the middle of the road. I had to call my golf cart mechanic to come and check it out. We ended up changing the E-break in the middle of the road and cost me 550$. These Ez-Go breaks are really ridiculous.

My wife has a Ezgo RXV , it's been through two sets of tires and just now started making brake noises , I put a new $ 150. motor brake on , which took all of 15 minutes , I'll take that over a traditional brake job any day .

I still prefer the drum brakes. When they work correctly, they rarely fail. EZGO didn't make accessing the brakes a simple thing compared to Club Car and Yamaha.

It’s a lock down parking brake. That’s it. It’s much more superior than drum brakes. Because you lack the proper tools to do a job you cry about the science and tech. I love that I can pull my key out and my Bluetooth settings on my controller will allow no one to take my cart at restaurant or store. I have a 2five so I have additional backups but I also have had several RXVs. Best cart on the market.

Still junk. Drums are far superior. RXVs are junk carts. EZGo dealers have told me the same thing. Locking out the controller isn't exclusive to EZGo.

Thank you very much for the video I think I can help you out a little bit. Underneath the seat and under the toe twitch their are 2 red plugs marked 1, 2 and 3, 4. If you unplug them and replug in #4 into #1 it will release the regen break without removing it. At least then you can move it freely but you still won't be able to stop it.

This is exactly my biggest problem with this brake. Apply power to disengage it and now you have no brakes! Nothing will convince me that this type of braking system is better than drums. This is a stupid design. This cart would not move even when power was applied directly to the brake manually.

Thanks I learned a lot. My cart has locked up three times, the last time about half a mile from home. This time the service guy told me the brake wasn't releasing becuase the gas pedal wasn't returning far enough. That was a $526 repair - now I'll carry a 10mm wrench and tow it home. You mentioned in the video that you used a 24v jump cable to energize the brake - is that correct on a 48v cart?

Great Video, just picked up a 2009 RXV. Ran great for 2 rounds then got back in it after last hole and wouldn’t move. The old motor brake has a lever you would push down to release the brake and move the cart. After installing the brake Like the one you did still Doesn’t move and brake will not release. Love the cart but now with I would have bought the Yamaha

Textron has done the same stupid thing on our newer $40,000 mowers. When they came out they had 2 plugs on the flat side of the brake. To move the mower you had to remove the 2 plugs and put 2 screws into the holes and tighten them, this would release the brake disc. But now when you need to replace the brake, the new assembly no longer has the threaded holes enabling you to move the mower.

I have a 2013 ezgo rxv and I had the same problem! The electric brake is nothing but junk and all out stupid design. Everything else about the cart I love. So I lifted mine about 8 inches, 24 inch tires, custom 4 link suspension," getting rid of the leaf springs" and added the hydraulic disc brake kit. I have the navitas controller so I adjusted the voltage on my new electric brake so it doesn't activate at all when I apply the brakes. I only use the motor brake as a parking brake. I highly suggest these mods. Now I wouldn't trade my ezgo for anything 👍🏻

This might be our problem as well 2009 EZGO RXV with 48v Lithium, We were riding around full speed yesterday and all of a sudden it started to slow down and we could smell what we thought was burning wire/electrical. we stopped lifted the seat and I checked all the wires, nothing was hot to the touch and the small was not coming from directly under the seat, I also checked the ignition key and it was all good. the more I think about it and watched this video, I think I fried my E-Brake.

I couldn't agree more! Drum brakes are a simple, reliable way to stop a golf cart. Leave it to EZGO to over complicate something. The main braking is done by the electric motor by way of regen braking. This brake is a parking brake but also kicks in if you mash the brake pedal to the floor. Its so stupid. There are plenty of articles online about people driving and this brake just fails and locks up while driving.

Club cars used to be pretty easy to work on but the new ones are terrible, especially the igniter is now in the coil?I called up club card and ask how it was done? They said it’s a two-man job and they drop the suspension engine as an assembly, then remove the exhaust to get to the coil where The igniter is now inside of the coil hundred dollars an hour five hour job at the dealership $200 part? So I try to do preventative maintenance on golf carts rather than curative, tired of this new shit🤨🤨🤨🤨

I feel your pain but please read why I feel the reason behind this design. Since I bought a used RXV I've had the break lock up or it was dragging only once when I hard braked but when i put it in reverse it unlocked. So as I have done research I've learned to keep the emergency braking or hard braking to a minimum and it reduces the chances of this happening. But I truly believe the reason why they did this and if you watch one of their videos you will learn that the reason behind this this design was more for the golf courses then it is for the private owner. There has been instances where people has not put the parking on the golf cart and it has rolled down hill. By installing a automatic electric braking system this prevents these issues from happening and possibly or even most likely reduces the insurance cost on the golf carts since it practically eliminates any chance of runaway carts. PS most golf courses but not all when buying new golf carts only keeping them for a short while so therefore there is no need for the manufacturer to make a brake that last a long time. 😜😠 Sucks doesn't it.

I'm pretty sure this breake is only used to lock up the motor once it is parked. My understanding is the motor is what is actually used as the brake. These brakes are only a parking brake I'm almost positive this from when I talk to a technical advisor at E-Z-GO. These do not do any breaking of any sort they don't slow the cart down. When you hit the brake pedal what happens is power is back fed into the motor almost like putting it into reverse slowly and that resistance in the motor is what creates the vehicle slowing down it's part of the regenerative braking.

  • @Kevinsgolfcarts

Kevin, I agree on the brake issue. Our RXV was given to us by group at a American Legion Post for my son that's in a wheel chair and loves riding in the cart. Will the cart move with the brake off or does it need to be connected to get power to the motor? I am thinking about adding a Disc kit.

I can still drive it but as soon as I let off the gas it comes to a screeching halt. Can't put it in tow mode even by the switch do you think this is the problem? Brake failure? One more question also, I left it in a friend's driveway because I didn't want to do any more damage so should I attempt to drive it back to my house in the neighborhood or is that going to tear something else up in the process?

I disagree. Properly functioning drum brakes will work whether or not the battery pack is dead or fully charged. If the battery pack is completely dead, you cannot release this brake without removing it. You have no way to control and stop the cart. This electric brake is a terrible design.

Unfortunately, I don't really know. Other than getting rid of the cart and get a different brand, I've not come across this issue since this cart. Most people that own these that I've spoken with have sold them for another brand. If you have an 2009, its possible there is a problem with the controller causing overcurrent to the brake.

Not “the dumbest idea ever”. Definitely a pain in the ass, but if you own a golf course having an AC drive motor is big for liability. No parking brake to worry about. Also, there is 4 connectors under the computer plastic cover you can disable the brake very simply.

These carts are designed to use the electric brake as its parking brake and service brake. When in tow mode, it releases the brake so you can freely move the cart manually. If its not releasing in Run mode, your controller may have failed. The controller is responsible for handling all of the inputs and outputs of the various electrical components. Its just like a modern car or truck, everything is run by computers.

It also had way more torque but less speed. This newer carts front end will also come off the ground on a steep hill. All the weight is in the rear. Mine is in the shop now with the brake dragging the motor down while I'm trying to cruise down the road. Third time this has happened since I bought it. Oh......and I dont play golf. The main brake that locks up your cart where you can not do anything with it. I would guess they engineers who designed the brake thought that if the power failed it is better to stop the cart rather than having it freewheel. I still favor drum brakes.

I agree what a bull$hit design. I recently bought a 2023 Kodiak Apex electric cart with dual 51.2 volt batteries 105 AH each. The batteries are Eco lithium. The cart has the Navitas Controller and I have the cellphone app to adjust some settings. The problem I’m having is I’ll be driving the cart at approximately 25-27 mph and all of a sudden it locks up and comes to a screeching halt, IN TRAFFIC, not a good feeling when cars behind me have to lock up on their brakes. This has happened on 3 separate occasions always when I’m at 25 mph or above. This is definitely a dangerous safety issue. I’m not sure how to disconnect it electric braking system, I don’t need it because the cart has disc brakes, it’s only purpose is to stop the cart from rolling when it’s parked. Terrible design

In my opinion, Yamaha for gas, Club Car for electric. EZGO quality has done to pot after 2002. There are many other import brands out there that are mostly electric but are not technically golf carts. The manufacturer classes them as LSV or NEV (Low Speed Vehicle or Neighborhood Electric Vehicle). I generally don't recommend these off-brands due to parts availability and their lower construction quality.

  • @Kevinsgolfcarts

I completely understand the intent. Its a similar reason why they designed the anti-tamper device around the carburetor, People wanted more speed so they would make adjustments outside of the recommended specs. It still does not beat good ol' drum brakes. They almost never fail. If this brake fails and has to be removed, you lose ALL braking.

My yamaha somehow all of a sudden stops when going down hill with fully charged batteries. i think it has a some kind of self charging system when moving. The system overloads when going down hill and the brakes kick in all of a sudden. I haver to go around the block a few times with lights on before going down hill.

You can't disable it when its fried. You have to either drag the cart with a locked brake and risk other damage or remove the brake so it will roll freely. The latter results is absolutely no way to stop the cart if it starts to roll away. This is a dumbass design.

gOLF CART TECH FOR OVER 7 YEARS. .. Totaly unfair criticism of RXV's.. Brake failure is rare when installed and used properly. to install you MUST clean motor surface AND SHAFT on motor... rust or carbon like buildup on shaft of motor will cause brake to drag and fail./.. Biggest cause of failure on brake is ovet-tightening of 10mm bolts on brake- guarenteed failure. another cause of brake failure is slamming on brakes to make back wheels slide....especially with lifted carts on pavement. when brake is pressed @80% to floor-power is cut to motor brake . this tends to damage brake as cart is designed to go 12mph on grass with small tires. Have seen many 10 year old brakes working just fine... and many brand new brakes destroyed by teen age boys in 1 day. RXV carts are reliable and very fun carts which are superior to most carts on hills. Lack of drum brakes is a positive...not a drawback. improper install of drum brake shoes will cause them to fail as well.

  • @Kevinsgolfcarts

    @Kevinsgolfcarts

    Жыл бұрын

I've been working on carts for 20 years. Sorry, but I completely disagree with all of your points. Mechanical brakes are far better, more reliable, last longer and are much stronger. If your batteries go dead, you have no way to move the cart without removing the brake completely or powering it from a small 12v battery. When the brake fails, removing the brake completely gives you no way to stop the cart if it starts rolling away. This is very unsafe. You literally have to drag the cart onto a trailer with a winch to "safely" move it. Drums work and need absolutely no power to operate. They work on both gas and electric carts, are easily serviced and are inexpensive. I stand by what I said and there isn't anything that will convince me otherwise. Its just a bad design.

Fortunately for me, people ask me what brands are most reliable and easy to work on. This gives me the ability to steer people in the right direction. There are not many new electric EZJUNK carts in the communities that I do most of my business. The older 2001 and older TXT/Marathons were the most solid EZGO carts ever built. This new stuff sucks. I think the RXV is a steaming pile of hot mess, gas and electric. I've been very vocal to EZGO about that. I hate the design of the Kawasaki engine in the gas RXV and the electrics need to be crushed and sent for scrap. I have to turn many people away that own the electric RXV since I don't have the Danaher scan tool. The ones with the Curtis controller are fixable but I still hate them.

The rxv has regenerative braking. That is only an e-brake. And if that brake goes out the cart locks up the cart won't keep rolling. It takes 15-18v's to release the e-brake. If you only knew anything about the rxv. You wouldn't look like such a fool. You shouldn't talk crap about something you know nothing about.

  • @Kevinsgolfcarts

This brake is not only used for a parking brake. It is used in conjunction with regen braking. All modern electric carts use a form of regen braking along side some form of mechanical brake. Regen braking alone is not enough to safely stop a golf cart. If you only took the time to understand what you are talking about before making this comment, you wouldn't look like a fool. Drum brakes are far more simple and superior to any electro-mechanical brake. There is nothing you or anyone can say to change my mind of this fact.

  • @adjake1

    @adjake1

It is absolutely only an e brake. It will only engage at a complete stop or when you hit the brake to the floor enough to activate the brake switch. Regen braking is enough to stop a cart on an ac cart. That said, I’m not a fan of the electric e-brake. Not a fan only because if something does fail and it locks down it is a pain in the ass for the customer. I always bring a brake with me when I get that call.

You can unlock the brackets by unplugging them, and reversing the plug for one. And the brakes are designed to automatically engage on a incline. So there is no need to ever lock the pedal. Before you start slamming a product do some research, the brakes actually do what they are designed to do. Cheers
