2008-2017 Honda Odyssey Valve Cover Gaskets Replacement DIY

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here's how to replace both valve cover seals on a 3rd/4th gen honda odyssey.
Can be applied to other odysseys as well, VCM or non-VCM. Non-vcm engines are easier to do.

Done. There were a couple of differences between your example and my vehicle. The most annoying one was the electrical harness in the front. It has a ground(?) going to a fuse box to the right. To remove I had to open the fuse box, use an 8mm socket (or phillips screwdriver) to remove the wire. Then had to disconnect the fuse box from its mount, unclip a retainer holding the wire. Then I was able to move the entire harness to the left as you did in the video. I simply replaced the fuse box while doing the rest of the work. Again, thank you so much for this video!!! It is a great example for how all of these 'How To" videos should be done.

Appreciate this tutorial. I have some experience working on my 2004 Accord V6 (J30A4) but I've been searching for an overview on how to tackle a future valve lash adjustment on our 2016 Accord V6 (J35Y1). The engines are juuuust different enough that I didn't feel comfortable simply ripping it open without knowing if RTV is to be applied where these head covers 'bump up' (the old J30A4's head covers have a completely flat mating surface). I'm also not looking forward to the day that the spool valve gaskets start leaking. I see that these J35s have TWO SPOOL VALVES (one per bank)? Come on. Great video; have a like.

The service manual says to remove that bolt to create slack in the harness. Less mystery if you have the manual, but it also misses stuff. For example it misses the left harness stay clip at 9:19. It's possible to remove the rear cover without releasing that, but is really tight for no good reason compared to releasing the clip from the stay.

One question, with this procedure, then it would be easy to adjust valves? I saw that in another post/forum you shared that this vehicle did a ticking sound, and that possibly the valve adjustment solves the ticking problem? My vehicle does that ticking noise at the moment. However, I haven't had the misfires yet. I hope to tackle this gasket replacement job and the valve adjustment also.

I just picked up a very well dealer serviced 2010 odyssey with 123k miles on it. Few things wrong - front valve cover gasket leaking, rattling under the car (probably a heat shield) and rough starts (just when cranking - suspected engine mounts) but it doesn't happen all the time. I want to tackle the value cover gaskets first. Upon closer inspection only the front one seems to be leaking. The back one looks clean all around unless it's hard to fully assess with the limited access we have from the front. If it's not leaking, probably not necessary to change it correct? I'm just dreading working with the limited space near the firewall. You make it seem like a breeze though 🙏

Had to get another cover and seems ok now. Curious, has anyone had issues after putting it back together that the idle was off? Seems to idle a little higher at times now and surges when giving it gas and letting off, after an idle for a few seconds. I found an idle reset online and tried it but didn't make much of a difference. I have 20+ miles on it but that is about it since tearing it down. Any suggestions? Thanks

Have the same result. Van surges or jerks forward when I lift the foot off the gas pedal. Also, if I lift the foot off the gas pedal, the van will slow only to about 20km/h. Same if I put it in drive from stop, it will start to drive forward and run at 20 km/ even without stepping on the gas.

could be residual oil or improper install of the rear gasket which is causing oil to leak on the exhaust

I have an oil leak coming somewhere in the front top of engine, kind of by the dip stick. Really hard to see. I see some oil on the exhaust pipe in front of engine. Really hoping It's the valve cover gasket. Any ideas where else it might be coming from?

"MrRangerZr1" I am using your OUTSTANDING videos to R&R the plugs, and adjust valves, on my 133,000 mile 2014 Odyssey. The harness over the front valve cover connects to the Fuse Box. next to the battery, I can not move it out of the way, like you did. Should I work around the harness or how would I move it? I have not begun the rear valve cover, yet. None of the 6 S Plugs show ANY abnormal condition, despite all the talk about VCM problems. I'm planning on putting 3 ounces of Seafoam in each cylinder, after overnight sit, crank engine before installing new plugs. Your opinion on that, please. Thanks! Mike Celi
