This 2007 Subaru Outback showed up with a few problems, one of them was a check engine light. The codes were P0137, P0037, and P2096. They all related to the secondary O2 sensor. In this video I show the procedure I went through in order to diagnose and repair these codes. All you need is a scanner and a DVOM. So, if you have a vehicle with a CEL, even if it's not a Subaru, you can use the information in this video to help resolve the problem. Here are some other videos you might find helpful.

Eric as a Subaru owner I love that you made this video. I like to fix any kind of problems I can on my car without having to take it to the dealer or shop. I have yet to get an O2 sensor CEL, but you have for sure taught me how! Keep up the great videos no matter the car brand. I just recently had a CEL on my 06 Impreza and it turned out a little bit of water got into the spark plug plugs, let them dry out over night the misfire was cleared.
Eric, I so appreciate your mechanical skills, as well as your communication skills and consideration of the viewer. Great Camera Person! Just what I needed to see.
Yep
Absolutely excellent; antiseizing the threads, using the special socket ONLY for tightening, cross threading, etc. is extremely good advice. Thank you so much for talking all the time in making this(and many other videos). Being a mechanic from the "dinosaur" era, I finally purchased my first OBD2 reader(Foxwell) yesterday and will (hopefully) find it useful along with yours and others good videos.
NEVER KNEW YOU COULD OHM OUT AN 02 SENSOR! SWEET VID ETCG! YOU JUST SAVED ME A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY!!
I hope to get a TDI after I'm done with the Subaru.
I'm so happy you're posting about a newer outback! Keep it up!
Thank you for making great helpful videos.. I've always wondered if there was a way to check an o2 sensor.
Great video Eric, nice to see you working on more Subaru's!
Love your videos, ive learned alot from watching you. have a similar issue with a 99 suburu legacy, Error code indicates low voltage and it loses power uphill specifically. unfortunately it is the only working vehicle and I need to figure out if my resolution is the same as yours.
This is my exact car. Down to the color and trim. Great video!
hey is that normal for the revs to be so high on start up, my merc does that on cold starts.
Worked great. Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Saved me a trip to the dealership.
Bill Burr is awesome. It's an honor that he watches the show.
Hey Eric, I'm looking at changing the upstream o2 sensor on the same car, would you use the same tools (swivel extension bar etc) to remove this one....as it appears to be placed rather awkwardly? Thanks for your help in advance.
EricTheCarGuy I have a 05 Subaru Forester and going to use my ohmmeter when I travel back home. Great tips in saving time.
Thanks for the video!! I have a '06 Forester XT with a CEL P0030 bank 1 sensor 1 heater control circuit. But I've checked the resisntce on the two black cable that goes to the sensor and the multimeter beeped and showed around 7 ohms... any ideas?
I have a 99 Subaru and supposedly the head gaskets were replaced along with a new radiator and thermostat...there is still an issue where the radiator will put fluid into the overflow bottle and filled to the top causing the lid to pop off that. It just seems as though there's something blocking the lower radiator hose going back into the engine I'm not sure. Every day before I leave I have to put new fluid in to make sure it doesn't overheat and I noticed last time there were a bunch of whiteish fibers in the fluid almost as if there was a rag left in it or paper towel perhaps, I don't know. I was just wondering if the lower radiator hose is what allows the fluid to go back into the motor and is that hose reinforced with something because it feels like it's hard inside of there. I also had a code for an MAF sensor come up. should I just replace the whole thing or can I just clean it with MAF cleaner? Will replacing that MAF sensor help with gas mileage? The Subaru gets pretty good gas miliage, but I think it could be a lot better than it is only getting about 200 miles out of 3/4 tank and I feel like it should be much more considering it's a 15.9 gallon tank. Also, will replacing the fuel filter help with that also? I just wanted to say thank you for your videos, I find them entertaining and informative.
Great vid. What brand swivels/u-joints do you use? Mine never seem to work as well.
Eric. My check engine light keeps COMING ON. I replaced the 4 OXYGEN sensors. MAF sensor , ignition coil , EGR sensor, the INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL MODULE ,STARTER, ENGINE CAMSHAFT SENSOR, THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE . WIRES, PLUGS, GAS CAP,AIR FILTER . I HAVE A 2002 FORD E-250. ERIC, IT STILL LOOKS AWESOME. THE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER 3 MONTHS WHAT DO YOU THINK?
No but it was the OE supplier. Same part without the mark up.
If you don't have the scanner,.will disconnecting the battery do the same thing to clear the codes? Great Videos you put out ,.Thanks
Thanks Eric - I'll be changing my front one soon which I think is getting a bit lazy on my 2007 2.5i Impreza (same motor) - this was a big help!
What should the temp gauge read on a2007 Subaru outback 2.5 l . Mine is at the half way point . Is that good or do I have to start worrying about over heating ?
Great video as usual Eric! Having the same heater issue with both my 92 F150 and 98 Ford Windstar. Gotta be the 02 Sensor! Thx
Nice, easy job. Thank you Eric! It was entertaining to watch.
Can you make a video on what are the best brands for tools like wrenches impacts and big ones too.
Man, thanks for the pro tips! Your Experience shows!
Just downloaded adblock plus through the chrome webstore and it is fantastic. Thanks for informing me about it and thanks to everyone else that blew up my inbox with messages regarding adblock software. I owe you all a big thanks.
Thanks for the tip, it was a blown fuse, love your videos.
Hey Eric can you explain why car parts from the "stealership" are so expensive? And Do you think it makes more sense to buy aftermarket parts? Also, what do you think about the K&N air filters?
I have bad fuel economy on 1.5L non-turbo Impreza, so I checked my primary O2 sensor and got a reading of 2.1 ohms... is that good? I had no CEL before checking the sensor, but now I have CEL.
getting a p0107 + 103 lean bank one and 2 on a 2015xv. any ideas?
Hey Eric can help me with my subaru legacy 2004, it shows er pd. What deas that mean?
Awesome Eric. Please do a video about SeaFoam soon! I want to know if you think it works and maybe you can explain how it works. thanks
Hey Eric is hard or easy to replace the starter on this car cause mine is kind of bad. it wouldn't start a guy tried to jump it then was like you might be right might be the starter. he tapped it with a piece of metal and was able to get home.
Superb video as always, thank you.
Can you also make a video on engine performance like tuning turbos and supercharges .
Great lesson Eric! Thanks...
Check the fuses.
You and scottykilmer are probably my favorite mechanics on youtube
Did u have the code P0420? My car is the same year also.
Hi Eric do you have a link for the diagnosis that can tell if there power in the sensor
On a Subaru, O2 Sensor failure codes doesn't always come back on immediately. My 04 STI had a Bank 1 S2 heater circuit low and sensor failure and I would clear the code simply because the CEL was annoying. It would always come back on after two driving cycles until my new one arrived in the mail.
Thanks, Eric, you're a big help. God bless.
Hi Eric.... I watch your videos related to Subaru and love the way you explain issues and suggest solutions. Its matter of time that i am struggling with an issue with my Subau Forester, 2005, 2.0X, Non-turbo. I recently cleaned my throttle body, PCV valve, TPM sensor, MAP sensor, EGR valve and IAC valve. After refitting them in car, my Suby behaving awkward way. Idle RPM are gone high and there is a fluctuation. Same time i am getting some oil burning / overheating smell with some smoke coming up from somewhere down near catalytic converter/ drive shaft boot. Please give some clue on these two issues. Thanks a ton bro for help.....:-))
I'm glad you showed this video. I have the same yr engine in my Legacy and want to change the 02 in it this Spring, Good timing,
Eric I would love to hear your opinion about working on this particular model. And year I happen to own. One of these o sevens. And I found that my 02 Impreza. Was Far easier to work on this one? In fact, this one has been kind of a nightmare. As far as space goes. And just the layout of everything. . Even changing the oil can be a bit of a bitch. Because of the location of the filter I was just wondering if you had any thoughts. on your own on that Maybe I'm looking for validation. I don't know.
Hey eric i got a Mazda Mx6 F2t , On the way back from a fishing trip on the highway my car was making a ticking noise it started of very light then got very loud i pulled over at a gas station bbefore it got worse i checked the dip stick and it had no oil, i topped it up but now it still makes that ticking noise sounds like a diesel truck, what would it be Bottom End bearings , Piston Slap , Turbo etc
You can buy those O2 sensor sockets at tool stores. They come in a bunch of different forms with Eric's socket being the most common kind.
cheers Eric ,know what to do now , excellent detail
p2096 bank 1 sensor one first ? diagnostic sensor?
Didn't know that we shouldn't remove an O2 sensor with an O2 socket. That's a great tip thank you.
No back probing with t-pins?
I wonder if its just better to replace both sensors being they are the same age?
Regarding your special O2 sensor removal socket. IF it is necessary to use it to remove a sensor, to prevent the socket from opening up along its length under stress, tighten a small worm gear clamp around it (if there is room for the screw portion of the clamp to rotate), & that will keep the socket from spreading open. Great video, as always.
Hey Eric great video. ScannerDanner would be proud of you!! =)
Great video. Easy to follow. Thank you for not trying to do the job AND hold the camera with the other hand....... drives me nuts.
hey eric, im guessing that the new o2 sensor was purchase at the dealer, What brand would you say makes the best 02 senor. I think it Bosch and dont you think 90,000 is a bit early for an 02 to go out.
Hey Eric, I recently had my car die like 4 times at highway speeds then once in town going 40kmph checked a few things out, then took it to a shop, they plugged it in and pulled a code stating crankshaft position sensor, so basically the car lags and starts to kinda chug and sputter a bit then just shuts off and the only lights that pop up on dash are oil an the battery, does that diagnosis make sense if so I'm getting the part its $30.00 an installing it myself ha ha
hey eric i have an 03 sentra spec v with code p0031 and p0037 based on this vid do i just replace both sensors if i do not see any resistance. if the engine light comes on after i have replaced the sensors what do you recommend? should i replace the crank/cam position sensor even though the code does not come up...thanks in advance
Excellent excellent educational videos. Thanks for your time efforts and filming.

Really excellent aren't they? One of the best KZread sources on Subarus in my opinion.
Another great video! Thanks Eric!!
Eric, is that the same concept for P0135 code?
Hey Eric! first up, great video, great explanation, thanks a bunch. I have a 2007 subaru outback 2.5i, essentially similar car to what you have in the video. I am getting a P2096 on this car. It started a couple of months ago, shortly after I replaced the engine air filter on this car for the first time ever (it has 160k miles on it). Yes, I know, the filter was filth. anyways, since then, the CEL in on with the P2096 code. It has gone off a couple of times on its own though, without me clearing it, so i thought maybe it is not a bad O2 sensor. I have so far cleaned the MAF sensor and the throttle body, both of which helped with the performance of the car, but the CEL always comes back on after clearing it with P2096. Finally, I have checked the heater circuit, it is not open, the beep is there. I would be very grateful for any suggestions you might be able to give me at this time as next steps. I have order a YCT sensor as replacement, but would like to avoid replacing if that is not what the root cause is. thanks for reading!
Great video and very educational
Eric .thanks for this.you are the best
Hey Eric, l've a 95 Accord and the [ABS] Light is on. Any idea what it could be?
eric, is replacing lights on the subaru's a pain in the *ss? Wonder cause I want to buy one as my first car, but maintenance costs shouldn't be too much.
Eric: thanks for your videos; I watched many of them and I appreciate what you do. I have an electrical problem on my 2002 Subaru Forrester, perhaps you or your audience might help. Here it is: AFTER a hard bump (sensed principally in the rear), RUNNING day lights (not the regular Low/High beams) GO OFF, Dashboard displays BATTERY and BRAKE idiot warning lights. When ANOTHER bump comes along, they all go and things come back to NORMAL. I have a BATT and Alt. electronic monitor (purchased at Walmart) that checks them AFTER the bump, it reads 15.0 DC, when regularly - on charging - it reads 14.0 Any ideas, will all be appreciated. Thanks.
Werent subaru's leaned out in 07 due to emissions regulations? i know it was a problem on the turbo motors that year(the stock tunes were very lean)
My CEL came on with the traction control light flashing. And the code that was pulled was a p0420. Should i change the sensors? The whole cat? A fuse?
I may have to change the O2 on my Legacy, Nice video, but the guy at Advance pointed to the one in the front, but now I wonder if he even knew about the other one in the back..Not sure if that scanner told him front or he just guessed I would be afraid of cutting the wire and doing it that way, I would probably take my chances of ruining the socket and having a bit of piece of mind. That air box is not from a collision, My Legacy has the same movement to it. I thought it odd, but it's the exact same movement.
Eric I also have a question.Scan tool showed that the O2 sensor was bad,not sensor of heater.Maybe it was an intake gasket?I've just heard somewhere that because of intake gasket it might show that O2 sensor in not working.By the way I've got light white smoke from exaust.
Hey Eric , would somehow finaglen a healthy shot of laqour thinner of something of the like in the open hole forward of the catt be a winning move? Instead of running that crap thru the engine? Kinda drop the kids off at the pool ? Just blow it right out I’m thinking ? Kinda a Kilmer deal with a twist ,know what I mean? I’m gonna hold out for your input b4...... thanx in advance
what do you mean by the heater is bad?
I know you love ngk plugs, but do you think ntk or ngk o2 sensors are better than bosch?
hello eric i have a 2002 Subaru wrx and i think i made a short and blew all my electrical system but then i replaced the engine fuse box with new fuses and i try to start it but only the dash lights turn and check engine flashes i put on my scanner and gave me 7 codes- O2 sensor circuit bank 1 high voltage, O2 sensor circuit low voltage bank 2, speed sensor A,Wastegate bypass regulator valve N-75 no function, mostly im looking why my car dont start up at all it says on my scanner i got ENGINE CONTROL RELAY short to B+ i dont even know what that means please help.
What is the model number on that multi meter. I need the same one for school and want to know if its cheaper online. Thanks
Eric, is that an OEM sensor? Cheers
Excelent job. Thank you.
I hope I didn't leave my O2 sensor too loose, because you really cranked yours down but I just torqued mine to some 15-20 ft/lb.
Hey Eric! at 17:16 there should be a bolt that secures that airbox, directly opposite and centered between the spark plugs, at the bottom of the airbox. Excellent videos as always.. my father has the same car, a 2006 outback 2.5i with 249,000 miles :) i have maintained it since new. Cheers!
my brothers 2010 Outback and showing codes p2096 and p0172 so could it be 02 sensor ? lean/rich same bank? thanks.
Thanks so much very good Jose garcia, you help me to much. Thank you
Good video Eric.
The first time i took the forester in for the diagnosis they cleared it and the engine light come back on with in 20 kms before i had the 02 sensor replaced. Now that the 02 sensor was replaced the engine light has not come back on.
Eric, Nice job, well communicated. However, I always find a way to create myself a problem. Unrelated to this O2 sensor, I removed my air box on my 07 Forester. I was simple trying to see the fuel rail and injectors from under due to a fuel smell. I corrected the o-rings and so all's good. But, always the but, I secured the air box, bolts and hose and clamps. I then started the car to test everything, all was great. I had no lights either! Success!!! However I noticed I had forgotten to plug the air box wire connector into the air box, so with the car running I reached down and plugged it in, well that stalled the engine. So I went in and restarted the engine and I noticed the Cruze Control light flashing, and the engine light on. I tried on and off. Still those lights remain on. What can I do to reset? I'm sure its not anything broken just should not have plugged it in while running...

oh ok is the engine really loud did you here about 2014 mazda 6 with a 2.2 diesel yet?
in regards to the o2 socket, i made a homemade one by taking a regular socket and cut the slot in, works great
Thank Eric learn a lot for this video thanks.
i have check engine light in subaru 2005,, 3day back changed starters and cv axle ,, can u help me
I got an 2.5 l 2010 outback, but the car charger doesn't work, any ideas how to fix, freaking dealer wants 90 just to see it. Forget them, btw love your vids
Glad to see you video thanks for show
have you ever started a cold engine. Usually a 4cly idle at 900 to 1000 6 and 8 are normal at 500-800 rpm
Eric. The reason why the airbox was moving around after you removed the majority of it is because you missed a single bolt that is located closest to you on the left side if you're looking at the engine bay head on.
That engine, with a turbo, packs quite a punch, I've seen them top 500Hp with 350Nm, makes it a hell fun of a car to drive... offroad :) Why didn't you mount the giant washer with the sensor?
can i buy one of those?
hmmm i have never heard of that what car do you have. Im a mechanic and i have never heard of this. If anything it might be a coolant temp sensor or such. does it take longish to start in the cold morning
I did, but I meant in the future if would include the mileage as you did here it would be helpful. I'm an automotive engineer, and the first thing I always want to know is how many miles these cars have on them when they come in. Thanks again.
