    Nice review, I like the engaging but level headed, analytical style based on lots of real world experience of the cars. It's amazing how, these days, guys like you and a few others on KZread are massively outclassing the incessantly sensationalist and dumbed down style of the broadcast TV shows. It's really appreciated.

    As an owner of a 997.1 C2S, I’ll begin by saying that to me your GT3RS 4.0 is the pinnacle. Period!! That being said, it really hard to compare a 997.1 GT3RS to a 997.2 GT3RS 4.0. I do feel like the GT4 (both variants) is a good comparison and perhaps a 997.2 GT3 and even the 997.2 GT3RS 3.8 is a bit of a stretch, because Porsche is always progressing. I think the conclusion of this video is typical law of diminishing returns. The GT3RS 4.0 is an insane car, but you can get 95-98% of the experience spending $90-150k USD (GT4, 997.1 GT3, GT3RS, 997.2 GT3, GT3RS 3.8) and 90% of the experience spending $35-65 USD with 997.1 and .2 C2S and some minor mods. I’ve never driven the 4.0 but I’ve driven a buddies shark works 997.2 GT3, GT4, and Lotus Evora 410 sport back to back up canyons and then drove home in my 997.1 C2S and was expecting to be severely disappointed, only to find that I actually wasn’t. (Make no mistake, I’m not saying the S is the same level as those special GT cars, but it still provides a ton of satisfaction. Manual of course).

    The 997 GT3 RS is an amazing car. Add Manthey suspension, an engine upgrade and you've got 99.7% of a 4.0 for a fraction of the price. The difference buys you a very nice air-cooled 911. The 4.0 is an investment, a 997 GT3 RS buys you a lot of smiles/mile.

    997 3.6rs and 4.0rs are amazing cars in their own right. I’m hard pressed to pick which I like better (money aside). 4.0 is for sure the better performer, but it’s not as obvious for me in the “fun factor” category. Don’t get me wrong, you can clearly tell which is the “better” car. I’m surprised you felt the 3.6 steering was less connected. The helper springs on 4.0 definitely make it more compliant on uneven surfaces. I believe the rose jointing is only the rear suspension (I could be wrong?). I always felt the 3.6 had more feedback in general, but less planted and more jittery all around (not as confidence inspiring but sometimes more fun at street speeds). I’m also guessing part of the reason you had trouble hitting redline is the taller gearing. The increased torque and shorter gearing on 4.0 definitely get you to redline faster. 4.0 kicks a lot harder, but sometimes I like how the 3.6 draws out the crescendo more. 981/718 are just entirely different beasts imo. I agree these are all great cars, with hair-splitting differences to anyone except the true Porsche die hard.

  • @888mf4

    @888mf4

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jeremy. You're right, they sharpened up the suspension using rose joints in the rear. They also had unique spring rates and springs that come with small helper springs to ensure some pre-load is always kept in the suspension. By using the long stroke crank of the RSR race car (there was no more space between the cylinders to allow expansion in that direction), a capacity of 3996cc was achieved, and because it had been stroked rather than bored, a lot of attention was paid to the way air gets into and gases emerge from the engine to ensure the power gain more than matched the increase in torque you’d expect. Porsche also fitted a new rear wing and discovered two things: first it not only eliminated all rear axle lift but then actually contributed 200kg of downforce at 183mph. Secondly it completely unbalanced the car aerodynamically. That’s why it has those little winglets at the front: they may not look like much but there are places at the Nürburgring where they make the difference between being able to go flat out and leaving the circuit. So whilst they may seem similar, and they have the same DNA, they really are two very different cars.

    ^^Like I said about the true Porsche die-hard :) 4.0 probably the last p-car I’d let go of behind CGT. But 3.6rs always leaves a big grin, especially in green.
