    I'll never forget after I had just backed the 2006 Melb cup winner Delta Blues my brother turns to me and says well its over for another year and my reply was no its over for 2 years and he says omg your picking a cup winner 12 months from the race and I reply without any hesitation yep Efficient will win the cup next year and I never waivered from him even though he never looked like running a place in any of his lead up races.What a horse! His Derby win was sensational!

    I love this race!! Purple Moon did run a fantastic race, no doubt and actually Mahler did a great job of holding third. But that late run by Efficient was just extraordinary. Out of so many horses with a good chance............it does suck to have the second best. I feel your pain. Been there many times.

    Worldwide Hip-Hop i likes it very much the year before when he won the derby but my father worked on the local council and they did a clean up at his house. He just says “y’all like the racing?” And they just say “we work on the council of course we do” and he tips us Efficient for the cup, this was in February 2007. He said he will have 2 starts in the autumn win both the. Win the Cox Caulfield and Melbourne 🙄🙄 it turned out he knew a lot of stable hands lots of people and they Williams had a huge opinion of Efficient which they are happy to tell everyone now but we’re quiet about him back then. Efficient was running and not looking too good but my father would see this guy every week and he’d keep saying “the horses trackwork is amazing top shelf keep backing for the cup dead set stayer” when it won I felt like a god 😂😂😂 had tipped it to everyone at work delivery men 😂😂😂 all bagging the hell outta me 😂😂 and now I’m hooked and it’s because of this horse. Only negative was we all had Efficient in Multi’s with Maldivian for the Caulfield Cup 😢😢 if you can remember what happened in that years Caulfield Cup

    This was the race that changed my punting life, I said all year Efficient would win the Melb Cup, then I watched him run 10th in the Cox Plate now im 48yrs old so this was near 20 yrs ago, so I thought he struggled in the Cox Plate how can he win a Cup over 1200m more, but I didnt know that the Cox Plate was just a hit out and that he was put over the jumps between the Cox Plate and Melb Cup, plus this was the first time I had a pretty bug bet in my eyes which was $500 , so I jumped off and backed Purple Moon. During the run I was getting excited and started to count money ( which i now know you never do,) so as they turned for home Purple Moon was teavelling well and I remember Greg Miles say in the call " Efficent is feeling the pinch" so I thought good choice Darren, then in the straight Purple Moon hit the front and I could see this Blue Grey horse starting to come home hard and I went ooo NO and it was Efficient but I thought Purple Moon was still going to win but Efficient was getting closer and then reality hit me. What Had I done, for 12mths since the Derby I told everyone Efficient will win the Melb Cup, but i jumped off, so the biggest lesson I ever learnt was never change your bet, i still think $500@$21 was a shit load if money but what a atayer he was one of the last home bred stayers from the great Zabeel. So last Monday I was at the shops and had $2000 in cash I was going to deposit at the atm, I walked into the TAB and I dont back trotters or pacers but I heard them say that this pacer Good Time Maddie had been backed from $25/1 into $5.50 on track, so I went over and said to the young girl give me $2 on the 5 at Mildura, she thought $2, then she laughed and she put it thru and the TAB intercepted the bet to check whatever as $2000 on a Monday night at Mildura Trots is a big bet and counted the money and thought na cancel it, i asked her to can it and she said I can't so me and this other guy were the only ones in the TAB and this horse led and coming for home kicked 3 lengths and I started riding it the other young bloke said we are home then this donkey started coming im thinking wheres the winning post and thank God it got there just hung on 1 more bound we both get done, I said what did you have in he said $150 , I showed him my ticket and he said get fucked $2000@$5.50 was obviously $11k return we high fived etc and again at my local TAB he would have cancelled it when ai asked so its just luck in punting, but prob like the 5th time ive ever backed a pacer in my life so instead if depositing $2000 the next day we did a form at the TAB and I deposited an extra $9000. Moral is always stay with what you bet or you think will win. Never change your mind at the last minute. But i still have nightmares about Efficient paying $21 and I should have had my very first big win from my very first pretty big bet for me. Now its $2000, ,$5000 even dropped a couple of $10k bets currently off the punt as the TAB and I are still friends but Ive had some pretty big wins in the last 2 weeks and I dont like pushing my luck.

    He didn't get the win on this day. But I don't think I've ever seen Purple Moon in a race anywhere in the world that he hasn't given 110% of everything within himself to give. Here we are 3 years later, well into the 2010 racing season. And Purple Moon is still grinding out fantastic finishes at 7yrs.old. Already a 2nd place finish in the 2010 Yorkshire Cup. And 3rd place finishes in the 2010 Ascot Gold Cup, and the 2010 Goodwood Cup. One could never question the heart that Purple Moon has.

    I lost my mum a few before this event and her favorite color was purple so in memory of her I backed Purple Moon and I was absolutely gutted it should have won the race. In 2006 the day before The Melbourne Cup I had $200 to win on Efficient then I found out it was scratched on Monday morning so I went to get a refund and put $50 on Delta Blues to win. I haven’t won a thing since that day, goes to show that she really was my lucky charm

    I have just watched the replay several times, needless to say I selected efficient and backed him . After reading all the comments you all have valid points, greg miles did give a wrong opinion but efficient did seem to be struggling around the home turn until he got to the outside. If you all remember he won the derby in a similar fashion .I would say that M Rodd rode him to perfection and followed williams and rogersons instructions to the letter . what a ride!!!!!! come on 2008 .

  • @3dog9ty
    @3dog9ty16 жыл бұрын

    Another thing. If he can manage some sort of cool inside trip, even while passing a few down the backstretch.......keep it cool around the final turn while accelerating then somehow find his gap at the top of the stretch,......LOOK OUT!! This horse is capable of extreme acceleration. It's going to take some luck, and some real good riding to win this race. But Court Vision is capable of all these things to set him up just right. I can't wait 'till Derby day!!

    I thought Dolhin Joe had a great run too. Considering the $44 chance was pretty much 3rd or 4th the whole way, and ended up finishing 5th ahead of many horses at shorter odds. Saying that though, there are no favourites in the Melbourne cup, you have to take into account there are 24 horses with a legitimate chance at winning. GO EFFICIENT. BTW, yates has a massive chance this year.

    You're right! If you have a look, Efficient is the widest runner on the track when they hit the straight, he had to come from 2 wide, to about 10 wide. Sounds like something you would have to do when you're feeling a bit of pinch.

    If not for injury Efficient would have been prob the best stayer besides the Diva we have ever seen. Only horse since Phar Lap to win the Derby and come back and win the Cup. Had he pulled up from the Derby win into the Cup he would have blown them away in 2006.

    Well I think the race might just set up that way. If Big Brown runs on Derby day that is. Right now I'm thinking the speed, (which is quality speed) will make the serious mistake of just going too quick. There will be a positioning battle and they'll go a bit too quick. Anything below :48 will be quick in the Derby and I think they'll go :46 and change. This will be great for Court Vision, If his jockey can just not run outside the whole race that is. He's gonna blow up down the stretch!!

    It's a pity that Efficient missed last years cup! But in my opinion, they brought him back much too late for his prep. He had 1 run and I think it was in like August (I could be wrong) at like 1200M. He finished really well and it was a great sign! But that was pretty much the only run he had before the lead up to the cup. He had no race fitness, and I think that might be why he got injured.

    @RuffianQueenOfRacing are you kidding? you want to be a trainer yet you obviously have no idea about how a long distance runner not being capable of running sprint races when he's suffered injuries for the past 4 years and is past his peak... my grandfather was a jockey and my family own racehorses. oh and i'm 22 and have friends who work for some of the top trainers in the country such as Peter Moody. so perhaps you might want to rethink that just a bit.
