2007 - 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5L - How to Replace Exhaust Manifold/Catalytic Converter - FULL GUIDE!

Welcome to the Trick Shift Garage! In this video, we are replacing the exhaust manifold on our 2007 Altima 2.5 Liter. This video provides a step-by-step guide, showing the tools and torque specifications used to completely remove and install the exhaust manifold.
We did have trouble with the hardware that came with the new exhaust manifold so we will not recommend the company we got it from. However, we will provide an exhaust manifold that has great reviews on Amazon below!

    If you have the stock exhaust manifold from the factory, the nuts that go with the studs for the catalytic converter are 16 mm. Mine was already an aftermarket replacement which is why I used 17 mm for mine. Just heads up! 😎

    If I recall correctly, Nissan started advising people to just not install the the exhaust hanger because it tends to come loose and rattle, and you don't really need it. Some aftermarket manifolds don't even have the stud hole for it. My aftermarket cat also didn't come with the replacement nut and washers, but instead came with a couple of little split washers that didn't make any sense. I ended up going in circles with the Chinese company over and over again about that. They kept sending me a link to an installation video that didn't even show that part. I also ended up reusing the old washers etc from the original exhaust hanger.

    Just a guess, but probably not unfortunately. There is a catalytic converter integrated with the OEM manifold with an O2 sensor before and after it. The ECU will pickup the same oxygen level and throw the CEL, at least that's how I think it would work lol. Thanks for watching! 🙂

    One point I would emphasize is that if you try to use a regular socket wrench to loosen the belt tensioner, it won't fit in there (unless you have an extremely low-profile type of socket wrench that might fit). The socket sticks out too much and the wrench won't be able to fit between the nut and the metal of the auto body. You'll probably have to use a wrench that has a box-end (like the one you used in the video) or one with an open end, or even better, the official belt tensioner release tool from Nissan. There's also a generic belt tensioner release tool you can borrow from Advance Auto, but I've found it a bit difficult to work with, although it seems to work ok if you stick it in from the top under the hood instead of going in through the side opening.

  • @TrickShiftGarage

    @TrickShiftGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    Great tips AJ! I found out about the socket ratchet combo not fitting in the beginning. I was thinking about getting the generic serpentine belt tool kit but decided to make do with what I had. A wrench with a pipe that fits over the end should give enough torque to loosen the tensioner to get the belt off. On a side note, I think my tensioner pulley is starting to squeak so might have to replace that soon. This car keeps me busy 😂

    @@TrickShiftGarage I replaced the belt tensioner pulley on mine. It was tricky working in the cramped space where the pulley is mounted, and I ended up breaking one of the bolts off in the engine block. Thanks! Yeah it's a very common problem with these Altimas. The original one that the car came with developed a small crack along the catalytic converter welds, which allowed exhaust fumes to come into the cabin. It could also be loud on a cold morning start up, quieting down once the heat expanded enough to semi-close the crack. Thanks for watching! 😎

    Hi there, my guess would be a crack in the exhaust manifold. From 2007-2013 the exhaust manifold was a common failure. The welds on the catalytic converter would crack and lead to loud exhaust noises. I advise that you replace the exhaust manifold and see if that clears up your issue. • @TrickShiftGarage

    @TrickShiftGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    You can check the O2 sensors and make sure they aren't leaking from there. Also the flex pipe that is down underneath the engine is notorious for rotting out and leaking exhaust there. If those are good, try to check the catalytic converter housing for small micro cracks! My 2007 Altima had this very issue, kept smelling very faint exhaust gases in the cabin and was loud on cold start-ups, once the engine warmed up the cat, the micro crack would kinda seal up and the smell would go away. The solution is to usually replace the manifold like we did here in this video. Now, the issue is the heat shield is blocking any chance of inspecting it and once you get the shield off the crack might not be visible, unless the it's on top in plain view. You probably won't find it until after you pull the manifold off and inspect it closer. Hope this helps! If you have any other questions let us know! 👍

    Hi MC! Thanks so much for watching our videos! This is a tough call... If the car is running without any noticeable hiccups besides the check engine light, I'd suspect the O2 sensor first. Also, the catalytic converters are notorious for going bad on these cars as well. However, the O2 sensor is MUCH cheaper and easier to replace compared to the catalytic converter so I'd go that route first and see if it clears your code. If it doesn't go away then it's the catalytic converter. Hope this helps MC thanks for watching again! 😁👍

  • @TrickShiftGarage

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Jamie! Wow! Sounds like you won't have to worry about mosquitoes this summer! 🤣 My guess/theory is that oil might be leaking pretty badly out of your valve cover gasket (or spark plug tube seals). So when you hit the brakes hard, the g-forces push the oil forward towards the front of the car and through the leaking valve cover gasket and on top of your manifold/cat. where then the oil burns off causing a lot of smoke under hard braking. I could be wrong though. No check engine light and a smooth running engine means something external is probably going on. Also, if your losing oil make sure to check the oil level and fill it periodically. Don't want to get too low on oil! Hope this helps, thanks for watching! 🙂

    Hey man, thanks for detailed tutorials you always provide. Just wanted some quick insight on a possible catalytic converter issue. I have an 09' Altima and recently tried to install some spark plugs and messed up. I might've over-torqued one of them and upon taking it out, some of the porcelain shattered and fell into the cylinder head onto the piston. I used a borescope and vacuumed as much as I could out but there were still a few tiny shards left in there. From my research, the pieces would blow through the exhaust valve and possibly clog up the catalytic converter. Did the job a couple of weeks ago and just got an OBD2 test and got the dreading P0420 code, along with P0113. Do you think those porcelain pieces caused the code for the converter? I heard you can use a cleaner for it but I'm not sure how it would work in flushing out the porcelain. Thanks

  • @TrickShiftGarage

    @TrickShiftGarage

    11 ай бұрын

    You're welcome man! Oh wow, this sounds like a nightmare, sorry to hear that this happened to you. Going by what you have stated, It's highly likely that's what happened with your catalytic converter. I'm not familiar with any type of cleaner that could flush out pieces of porcelain so couldn't say if it would work or not. The safest route would be removing the catalytic converter and see if you can blow the pieces out with some compressed air... Or you can just replace the whole unit and not have to risk pulling it off again, definitely a tough spot to be in.

    Some people say you should "break in" a new catalytic converter by idling it for a few minutes and then holding the accelerator down so the engine runs at like 2500 RPMs for about 2 minutes. Something about the substrate expanding or something. You don't think it's necessary?

  • @TrickShiftGarage

    I let mine idle for about 20 minutes before shutting it off. I did even know about this "break in" procedure to be honest. Good to know for future videos. I'd say try it and see how it works out. I haven't had any issues with mine since installing the new catalytic converter. Thanks for the info AJ! 😉👍
