There's no telling how many people you stopped from disassembling the entire dash only to find no expansion valve under there. Great video and highly appreciated!!!

Thank you so much for this video... Being a woman working on a vehicle but being frowned upon by many repair places when asking about the process verses the prices, it comes in handy to have this viewing knowledge! Im attempting this valve expansion replacement since I've already installed the compressor but can't wait to see the install video... Thank u again!

Thank you for the great explanation of where each part is located. The expansion valve is the part, i have dreaded from working on due to the same thing you have heard, about having to take the dash apart. Thanks for the video.

Not everyone knows they switched from a low flow expansion valve (Denso 447500-1600, Toyota PN 88515-52010) to high flow expansion valves (447500-2090, 447500-2540, 447500-2740, 447500-3060, Toyota PNs 88515-52020 and 88515-52040) on this vehicle. Supposedly to improve refrigerant flow control at low heat loads since the car has a variable displacement compressor (a very small TXV opening at low evaporator heat load means more hunting and this causes issues with the compressor's displacement control) and also to provide better cooling at idle since more refrigerant flows through the evaporator and the variable displacement compressor is always running. They also made different valves featuring a low flow control charge for vehicles equipped with fixed displacement scroll compressors (447500-2390 and 447500-2850) to aid with evaporator pressure pulldown as the clutch cycles off and on. A high flow TXV is identified by numbers 2 and 8 on the power head (the metal disc) and sometimes the letter H too (i.e 2H8=high flow). Done a lot of testing on these Denso valves since i wanted to find a suitable replacement for another vehicle.

My '06 box has 106k on it and I'm on my 3rd compressor. They don't last long in South Texas heat. Though when it comes time for the 4th unit next year, I might do the job myself this time.

Check the hoses, you might have delaminated hoses that prevent proper oil return killing your compressors. And replace the condenser and dryer

I just bought a 05 xb. The air was kinda working when I bought it, so I thought it just needed charged. I charged it then I sprayed out of the compressor out of the bolt w two holes on the bottom. Would this mean I need a new compressor now? It has 100k on it.

I have the same 06 scion xb my question is my ac condenser just leaked out all my freon and I have been driving for a few weeks with no a.c. I bought the ac condenser and do you think my ac compressor is no good anymore? My issue was only a leak on my ac condenser but I don't know if me driving with the compressor spinning kills it. Thanks.

@@grimgodley5481 I seem to have to charge the system about once per year. I don’t actually get why, because when I hook up the charging canister my levels are still in the green area on the gage. But the system does not blow cold unless I charge it to the very high end of the green almost into the red. But otherwise it is still good.

@@tonycrumrine9947 That's good to hear. Maybe moisture leaking into the system during the winter might be the culprit. I've heard you're suppose to run your ac at least once a month for 15 minutes even in the winter to keep it cycling properly but I've never had a chance to test this theory. Thanks for the replies, dude.

Thanks for the video. My AC works fine, but yesterday my serpentine belt frayed making lots of noise driving home from work. Upon inspection, I found the ribs of the clutch pulley were broken. I can only imagine a rock got caught in there at one time. Anyways. I need to replace the pulley on the compressor. Looking to source one at the local pick&pull. It looks like Toyota used a non-standard recessed bolt in the AC Clutch. do you have any knowledge on how to remove the clutch from the compressor? Really don't want to purchase a new compressor and evacuate the system. Im in Central Coast of Ca & can get by w/o AC, so I may just run a shorter belt and abandon the AC to avoid the high cost of replacing the compressor...

Kelly McKinley I do not know much about how to pull the clutch off. It’s been a while since I did this repair but it seems like I was told that it wasn’t feasible to replace the clutch.

@@tonycrumrine9947 currently dealing with A/C problems on my 2006 Scion xB. Found out that the compressor doesn't have a typical magnetic clutch, so it always spins. It's a variable displacement compressor? So, I would guess that you can't just replace the clutch portion. It has an internal solenoid that regulates the flow of freon i believe.

  • @abelbriones4370

Is it possible that only the compressor clutch needs to be replaced? I was stopped at a light and my car turned off, I was able to make it home. I put a shorter belt to bypass the A/C. Anyway to test it, A/C was working perfectly until it died the one time.

Abel Briones mine basically did the same thing. Problem is the clutch is more difficult to replace if you can even find the parts. Then you also have no warranty. I gave up on clutch and just bit the bullet.

When the compressor went bad did the ac light on the ac button go out as well? Brought my xB with a bad compressor and the light never lit up for me... wondering if it will go bad on once replaced or if i need to find the appropriate fuse.

Nathaniel Brown when the compressor went bad, it just started making a very bad growling noise like a bearing was about to seize up. It did this very suddenly and in my two to three mile drive home it got worse and even liked the engine at one point. The engine did restart and I was able to drive it home. The button always functioned properly.
