2006 Chevy Uplander rusty spare tire mount
Ойын-сауық
This video shows you what it's like to look under the rear tailgate of this minivan and see the heavily rusted spare tire mounting brackets and cable lift. Many GM cars trucks and vans have this type of spare tire mount, and if they are not properly maintained, the assembly can rust and prevent the spare tire from being easily removed. And since you usually need the spare tire when you don't have easy access to tools or a lift, it can be a real pain when the tire won't come down.
In this case we hammered out the tire, removed the rust, and lubricated the assembly with WD-40 and antisieze compound. So hopefully next time the spare tire lift assembly will work properly.

Helpful. Did not tell me how to get apart but gave a view of what it looked like apart and what the problem was. I took a 8" punch and hammer and hit the washer from the bottom. A few hits from each side and it came apart. Thanks
Helpful video, thank you
very well done
Mine had the metal piece that was on the spring rusted to the bottom piece and stuck to the tire. Clean it up and put some anti seize all over it.
Will a full size spare tire fit under there as my temporary spare is missing
I have an ‘06 Buick Terraza. I need to drop the spare tire, but the wrench extension you’re supposed to use to crank it down, goes all the way into the nut that’s on the other end, that you attach the actual tire wrench to. Surely that can’t be intended to go in that far, that the nut is going to scrape the paint on the bumper? Could I have gone through that gearbox? It sounds like it’s doing something with the cable, but I can’t see anything happening. Thoughts? I live in northern Michigan, so have a nice slurry of salty many months of the year!
How down the tire???
I helped a neighbour pick up this van cheap. One tire got shredded, there was no spare at all. I freed the mechanism, but the bar you use to lower it was so badly rusted it has expanded so much where you use the tool, I cant get anything to move it. Any fix for it?

Probably not. I've seen quite a few of these "undercar spare tire mounts" that have gotten SO VERY corroded from road salt and brine solutions, that the metal generates so much rust, that it's impossible to turn, or worse, when an attempt is made to remove all the rust and free up the mechanism, that so much of the mechanism's material is lost to the rust, that there's not much left there to support the weight of the tire anyway. In that case it would be dangerous to continue using it as a spare tire carrier, since it might let the tire loose or drop off while driving (which, you could imagine, would not be good if a car or truck behind you were to suddenly drive into a tire on the roadway). So in those cases, sometimes customers will buy a new spare tire holder, or just forgo using the tire carrier and completely remove the old assembly for safety reasons.

Air compressor for the rear air suspension.
I had to zip-cut mine off. The spare is a piece of junk. Go to a wrecker get a real rim and tire and throw it in the back, You can thank me later. :)
Alot of talking but no solution.
