    My heads were discolored the same exact way. One varnished and one looks new. 141,000 miles. I thought the same as you until I saw your video. It may have something to do with more heat at the firewall?

    Very informative thank you very much. My 2010 escape 3.0 v6 with 180k has a rattling and i suspect its a timing chain or possibly cam phaser? It also has the front cover leaking oil everywhere so im thinking to change everything at the same time. this fusion engine looks very similar except mine has plastic valve covers and electric power steering so no power steering pump. Not much info on the 09-12 escape for the timing chain or phasers.

    They are very similar but not exact. You could pick up a manual for the specifics and use my video as a visual aid.

    the way to do these cars is, buy a junkyard motor, go through it, have it on stand rebuilt, stored/covered. when the one in car goes, change bullets. then go through bad one, put on stand, storage. rinse. repeat. better off doing those chains, gaskets, seals on a stand, rather than in car. techs have be thrown under bus by design engineers, extreme limited access. when you're 61 you'll realize why. it kills your legs, behind the knees, tendons, etc. leaning over fenders. tendinitis.

    Are the timing chain cover bolts different lengths? Do I need to keep them in a specific order?

    48:08 Believe all are the same length but try to keep them in order. Especially the left hand side where the 13th bolt (top left) and the 1st bolt( second from the bottom on the left) are different.

    I have one of these engines- the timing chains should be double roller, or at least single roller, and there should be matchmarks on the cams, chains, balancer, TDC indicator. it's a Mazda design Ford adopted. that's why it's so hokey. there should be no guesswork or room for error. this is why Mazda is 2nd rate.

    The color difference between heads could be related to heating; I mean, if you research a little, you’ll find lots of oil starvation related problems with fusion on this years. I suffered myself with this issue; without warning, the engine just stopped working, and a week later went burned down. At the dealership they’ve opened it to find that one head was done. Lots of metal chips and the color difference you’ve already mentioned. My actual problem: after 5 year waiting, change of ecm due to too much waiting, nobody could set timing, until I payed lots of cash at the dealership, then they gave it back with a check engine light on. The code mentioned “P0012 camshaft position timing over retarded bank 1”. Right now has power lose on hills, stalls occasionally, and low gas mileage. Hope yours does not get burned. Fast solution: inside cleaning with a Motor Medic motor flush… yeah, this engine starvation issue related to small oil galleries is very common. Check it out.

    it's a schitt design. he did a fine job on it though fixing it. why use 4 cams, 4 valves, all the bling, when a 3.5 liter GM V6 makes the same power. single cam in block is wayyy more reliable!!

    @@tunnelportterror That's why I bought the 2011 F150 with the 6.2L. Easier to work on than the 5.0L dohc. I rebuilt the 4.6L dohc in my '96 Cobra and it was more work than it was worth really.

    @@ValleyMobileAutomotive While I’ve found this reply enormously helpful in my diagnosis on my 07, I shall now fall into a cool but steady state of deep frustration as I research how to get this done within the next 10-5k miles on my Escape. 🫠🔫 Like, really? At 125k on the nose this *itch needs to be done because what’s happening in my mfkn crankcase at the moment is no bueno. Why not use a belt for f*** safe if the service interval has a floor this low?! 😡🤬

    I have an 02 Ford Escape 3.0 and i think the timing chain jumped. I can’t get anyone to confirm my suspicion, all the sudden after sitting for a few months I go to use the car and it had no power. After hours of investigation I found the front 3 cylinders had exactly 60psi where the back 3 had 155. I really hope I’m making a mistake going forward and replacing the timing chain. It’s odd as the car only has 92k miles and has been babied. Also do you have a way to send a copy of a manual for an 02 escape 3.0? Thanks

    Was timing chain the issue? Just had same issue on friend's car.

  • @Diebog

    @Diebog

    No in my case it wasn't the timing chain. I took it all apart and found everything was still in time. What I should it done before I tore into it is a leak down test which showed I was leaking past the rings on all 3 cylinders. My thoughts were because I had taken the manifold/header off on that side and a freak snow storm burried the car and was like that for months and that some rust formed on the cylinder walls and caused my issues. After soaking the 3 cylinders in MMO, acetone, and some other things, I got them to reseal and while not 100% it's better. If you suspect the timing jumped I would suggest pulling both valve covers, and check the timing on the marks on the camshaft. There are lines/marks on the backside of the camshaft gear that you can use. If both banks line up then it didn't jump a tooth.
