2005 to 2010 Honda Odyssey lower ball joint replacement.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today in back yard we are replacing a pair of lower ball joints on a 2005 Honda Odyssey. Replacement ball joints used in the video are Moog part #K80606.
** This only applies to cast steel control arms. If your van has aluminum lower control arms, you must replace the complete arm with ball joint.. **
Enjoy!

I cut off the exposed threads on the sway bar link with a cutoff wheel , it usually adds just enough heat to where the nut flies right off

heavy rusted 2007 odyssey today. 1) only steel arm ball joint is replaceable, aluminum arm needs whole arm due to steel vs aluminum corrosion. 2) neither removed BOTH sway bars (plan A) or one sway bar bushing (Plan B). Plan A - I have tried Pb blaster, vise grip, hex tool, torch, all techniques were okay. maybe cutting the rusted/corroded tip off is better solution. Plan B - sway bar bushing 2x 14mm needs Swivel Socket Set due to tight space. I first remove passenger sway bar but driver side is too rusty so I went to plan b, removed passeger swap bar bushing 3) when installed new arm, ball joint last step. First used jack to moves brake knuckle little to the side , installed new arm and screwed in both 19mm long bolt (not tight), then installed ball joint with castle nut, then jack up ball joint knuckle as vehicle weight on it, torque 2x 19mm to 90-95 lb-ft 4) control arm bolt 2x 19mm, castle nut 19mm, swap bar bushing 2x 14mm. I used Detroit Axle aluminum arm (castle nut 22mm). 4 hrs of trials and errors. Hope it help...

Thanks for this one, had my doubts about exact same part fitting 2005 odyssey, as some information in internet was that Moog ball joints dont have goot tight fit. This proves perfect fitment.

I have never seen so much rust on a van car. How can this van be safe for a person to drive. I honestly would not try to fix it I would get rid of this rust bucket. Thanks for sharing this video with us.

Could be your strut mounts. I recently changed the struts on my '04 Odyssey and noticed the bearings in the mounts were shot. I did have some noise - rides smooth and firm now. You may want to also check your inner and outer tie rods.

Get a can of map gas and a bernzomatic torch and throw some heat on those endlink nuts. You'll have a hell of a lot easier time getting them loose.

@@beandipss Agreed. Did this yesterday and the one link fell apart on me so I cooked that one near orange and got it off no problem. Side note: My supposedly lower quality sway bar link came with a spot to put a wrench on it on the back side - wow that one was SO much easier than the "high quality" link that just had an allen head inside the bolt which stripped quickly. I was careful with it too...

Couldn't you put the ball joints in the freezer overnight. Than heat the arm the next day, remove ball joint from freezer. Should slide in with no effort if done correctly. Just like doing wheel bearing 👍

My suggestion is if you know you need to do this spray every nut and bolt with penetrating oil a day or two before and save yourself some pain and stripped or broken bolts. I know a mechanic doing this doesn't always have that luxury. Oh and side note, keep the penetrating oil away from the brakes. Spray the brakes with brake cleaner after if you didn't remove them before spraying everything with oil.
