Your concise format and tool details (T40 driver and an M8x1.25 tap) were extremely helpful. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Thx for the video. I had the same issues taking out the liftgate supports on my van. Mainly I think the problem lies with the soft metal on the new liftgate supports. But thanks for the size on the tap in case I ever need to rethread the liftgate screw holes.

Clear, detailed. This told me I needed the T40 tork tool, which the Haynes repair manual did not. Well done. Thank you for sharing.

Well done! It is good to have the door well supported even when removing the old struts as the threads are easy to ding up.

I have the grand caravan version 2005, and I find it odd that there is no 3rd lift or brace on mine. You would think they would have done it one way or the other. I Always check youtube now before I do even the smallest of jobs just in case I over looked something. Thanks.

There is a thread lok adhesive to secure the original bolts. You need "Charles Atlas" muscles to move these bolts with a T40. I ended up gripping with a Mole wrench. Good luck

If you have no experience with heating bolts/nuts, don't try this, but you can "build" a heat shied with some aluminum foil and heat the bolt with a heat gun or propane torch to soften the blue lok tight.

Jim what is wrong if it just seems to strip and not catch. Took off old one and now can’t seem to get the new one on. When I get one side tighten the other side will not catch and tighten

Always hard to diagnose via comments, but hopefully it's just a misalignment issue and not actually stripped or damaged threads. Try getting the hard side in first and leave it a bit loose, then get the easier side started. Use a board, or have someone help to hold the hatch so the bolt can start without fighting the weight of the hatch which will help with alignment. Check the threads of the bolts for signs of damage. Try putting the old one back on and if it starts OK the problems is with the threads on the new strut. If it won't go back on it's a problem with the threads in the vehicle.

Typically they wear out pretty evenly and replacing only one could leave one weak and one strong and that could cause some binding. At about $25 each it's best to replace in pairs.

You totally skipped the part where you put them on, which is what I'm having trouble with. I have the gate propped open but can't figure out how to compress or expand stretch the struts to the right length so that I can actually screw them in on each end. The gate is either too high or to low depending on how I prop it.

  • @jimdandy6472

Have someone help, or adjust your prop to the needed length. I could have used a tripod so I could show it, but I typically just document the steps and mention some tips.

It really doesn't matter which end you do first. The main issue is not to strip the T40 Torx bolt. Get the right length extension and a long ratchet or ~15" breaker bar, then get on the bolt as straight as you can, push in hard and turn with steady pressure. These do have thread lock on them so they turn hard even once they break loose. Good luck.

@@jimdandy6472 I'd better get the right tools then. I used a socket 10 inch-handle ratchet on the number 7 socket. It doesn't fit the torx. A little loose on socket 7, but too big for socket 6. I fear if I bring them on a shop they're just gonna force it with whatever they have.

If it's a hex head bolt, make sure you are using a six point (vs. 12 point) socket. Try SAE (American) sockets and see if one fits tighter. Pull rubber seals, etc. to get the best access to the bolt. Use a 7mm 1/4" drive 6-point socket, 6 inch long 1/4" extension, 1/4" to 3/8" adapter, and a 12"+ breaker bar. I suggest the 1/4" drive to give you the best chance of getting a straight shot at the bolt head. I hesitate to go here, but with the correct heat shield a propane torch could be used for about 15 seconds to heat up the bolt. This softens the thread lock, but this should be a last resort.

One thought. Try putting one of those attachments for a drill, that holds different bits, on the hex bolt. They are 6.5mm. Shank nut/bit driver. If it fits tight find something to allow you to turn it with a socket and long handled ratchet.

About $25/pair from any auto parts store or Amazon. You can try the salvage yard if you want, at least you would get some practice with removing them, and if you strip one out you just move to the next van.

The trick is first get all the tools that are needed. Then get an item to lift the hatch grow the middle to ground. Then remove the old struts. Then install the struts. Easy.
