Thanks heaps for the cable tie suggestion. I spent 3 hours yesterday trying to get the cover gasket to stay in place and got quite frustrated. M62 engines are so much easier to do

Most of that oil on the skid plate is from the alternator bracket gasket. You were so close to it, should have done that as well. You will still have a big issue with oil dripping.

About the Gasket, had the same problem with the Oil cooling hose O-rings on the dreaded alternator bracket gasket replacement, combined with tappet cover/timing chain cover replacement. Found a Standard Metric combo with over 600 o-rings. Suggest spending the 30 bucks before digging into a Beemer, just really handy when you come across an o-ring, because, your local auto parts are not going to carry them. Also, unable to find the torque specs, would be awesome though.

I don't recall much need for "special" tools, but have plenty of different extensions and shallow/deep socket combinations ready for action. Some pick tools help with gaskets and such. I'll double check to see if there is something I'm forgetting, but tool wise I think it was a pretty standard job.
