    To clarify: I'm as much of a Porsche GT lover as I am a Honda RWD lover. I ranked a stock (modded exhaust) 997.1 GT3 quite a bit higher than even this expertly modified S2K. In fact, 5 of my top 6 cars in my ranking spreadsheet are Porsche GT (997/991) cars. Maybe it's due to the way this 996.2 is set up (PSS tires, barely any camber, Moton shocks that didn't soak up bumps nearly as well as the JRZ) and/or inherent qualities of the platform, but the 997's I've driven are vastly better from a driving dynamics perspective, in my view. That said, I am definitely more accustomed to FR handling characteristics over RR, so I won't claim that there's zero bias in my perspective, but a lot less than some comments are implying.

    Most of the upset people seem to be forgetting you owned/tracked a couple Porsches too huh? LOL But anyways, yeah it does sound like the setup, especially the tires, were probably not optimal on the 996 in this comparison based on your driving feedback (especially the understeer in and out bit)

    @@FCustureri i don't think there is anything wrong with the tires, on throttle understeer (or understeer in general) is normal with RR cars, the new 992 GT3 kinda solved it with double wishbones in the front (finally, what was Porsche doing all day) but you have to drive those cars much differently (hard on the break, trailbreaking, slower corner entry speed) but you can also go on the throttle much earlier than FR cars but the limits of a RR car cannot be tested on public roads really. It's not so easy to "feel" the limits like in a BMW

    I agree with everything you said - PCA racers rave about the feel of 996 gt3 compared to all other gens, but say setup is fickle, and I'm unsure if that is ever translatable to real life roads.

    @@CarYenta-1 it is very much translatable. But the 996 cup has 1480 and 1380 lb spring rates front and rear. With such a narrow spread the car is beautifully balanced and does not power on understeer at all. Set up is not that difficult but the window is admittedly much smaller with the 996 than the later platforms, which means find a compromise between road and track is quite difficult to find. A good driver will find the limit of the compromised set up quite quickly.

    You need to brake in the 911 much later and more aggressive to get the front end to bite and turn. For an average driver a front engine layout is of course going to be much easier to drive quickly without knowing the limits.

    @@sklyrovka not really, the only advantage the GT3 has is power. Those generations of GT3's werent as good as the last 3 gens. Even a M3 CSL could keep up with a GT3. A well tuned S2000 can easily do the same unless the road/track is very power dependent

    Dollar for dollar, the S2000 was (and remains) one of the all-time-great 2-seat roadsters. There are low-production, expensive cars which are better. But what mass-produced, moderately-priced roadster was ever better? Any Porsche 911 is a special car, but none was ever inexpensvie.

    Great review, completely agree with your assessment. 996 GT3 doesn't neutralize the drawbacks of RR platform anywhere close to as nearly as much as the 997 GT3. That S2K was also immaculately tuned by Erik

    Another excellent video. Always enjoy your insight. Contemporary reviews of the 996.2 GT3 agreed they’re a challenge to drive - have to set it up to get front grip. Meant to be one of those cars that’s a challenge but when you get it right, very rewarding

    I have an AP2 s2k and a 997.2 GT3. I honestly prefers the s2k on the road at everyday speed, and I also find myself driving the ski a lot more for various reasons. But if I am asked to only keep one car there is no contest. The Porsche for sure. Every time I get behind the wheel of that car it feels like a special event.

    I have driven a 996 and 997 GT3 around the track, (both were pretty close to stock) and the 996 is my favorite car I have ever driven on track. The 996 might not have as good driving dynamics, but the way it plays, I found spectacular. It dances and pivots spectacularly and towing the line between understeer/oversteer using the throttle around a corner was incredibly rewarding. The 997 felt a lot more planted and I actually found it wanted to understeer more.

    Although both cars have been modified, I believe your overall evaluation is accurate. For those not familiar with driving an S2K, it can be difficult to fully understand all the rave about the S2K. It's not so much about 0-60, or driving the car at it's top limits. It's about the great feel you get at moderate speeds, especially on mountain roads. Precise steering, snick shifting and good acceleration it is all there. Sorry Porsche, BMW, and Nissan

    Keep the "unusual" comparisons coming! You exhibit interesting cars on interesting roads that spark interesting conversations! My experience, RR has to be enjoyed on a racetrack more so than on the street since it doesn't have "playful" limit balance and has to be driven hard to come alive. Maybe try an air-cooled 911 with skinny tires?! This 996 needs some setup work for sure, especially for that road. As you know RR does require a different driving style entirely to FR or MR. Brake later (rear weight is better for braking), light trail brake/throttle lift (depending on setup) to keep weight on the nose, later apex, hard throttle earlier for exit with allll that rear traction. It takes time to re-map your rhythm for an RR and it won't behave well if you drive it like anything else. Porsche has changed the RR game significantly though with lots of extra front track width from the 991 RS and now all 992s. No doubt the S2K is an all-time great, but variety makes cars fun! Personally would like to see more dialed-in ND2s and NC2/3s for comparison if you can find them!

    Definitely want to see more odd ball comparisons. It's an interesting and enlightening take on uncovering the nuances of each car as they're likely to stand out more against unusual company. Also it was great to see the 996.2, even if it looked like a frustrating death trap on that road. I read that the 996.2 GT3 was already too stiff and for bumpy roads from the factory so the suspension on this one probably works great on track but looks very sub optimal for the road. One thing that is supposed to be a dynamic weakness of the S2000 is the electric steering. An early system (like the NSX's) with little feedback and weird feeling. How does this stack up? Or are these track builds ditching the electric assistance for better feel? Also, please don't let immature butt hurt fanboys in the comment section influence your future content. I didn't seen anything in this review that resembled you attempting to say that the S2000 is fundamentally a better drivers car than a 911 GT3 which is how some people are reacting. You're reviewing modified vehicles, on a specific piece of road, and just describing what you feel and how they respond and in that specific situation. It's a really interesting thing that most of us won't get the opportunity to do, so please keep content like this coming. Good work :)

    Bought the grand prix white s2k in 2001 when first came out. Love that thing. Felt like a go cart when I first drove it. Was my everyday driver for 6 years. Now have a 991.1 Carrera S weekend car. Can't beat that rear engine and PSE exhaust noise.

    True, but It's relatively inexpensive to change the gearing in a Honda, but cost prohibitive to do so in a Porsche. A shorter gear set for my Cayman is $8K, not including labor. That's Porsche tax for you.

    This is a tough one to choose, which one of them I would like more. I think they are both very great cars. I would choose the 996 because it is faster, and it sounds a little bit better.

    Cool review. Although, by the look of the ride height and the way the wheels are sitting in the fenders of that 996 GT3, it doesn’t look like a track set up. The correct alignment is imperative to the way these cars handle. They need rake and a lot of camber to get them to their full potential. Night and day to a stock-ish alignment, even with a track focused suspension.

    The S2000 is one of the greatest driver’s cars of all time. The current market prices are absolutely worth it. I’ve had mine for 16 years - driven A LOT of other cars over that time - and will never sell it. It’s sublime.

    interesting comparison. please take the time to adjust the dampers for the road as it would be a prudent and more accurate comparison with a few minutes to tune these for your particular road surface. Unless the alignment has changed, the front camber is at 3 and the rear is at 2.7...plenty of camber, ideally suited for the track, particularly when running on hoosiers (235 front, 315 rears). further, front sway bar is on soft setting, rear is in the middle. Lots of thoughtful and meaningful input from experienced drivers, best advice is mentioned numerous times on learning to respect and properly drive a rear engine race developed Porsche; brake, turn-in, squeeze the throttle and unwind the wheel....................... keep up the interesting comparisons

    Its about the experience, the way the car drives and how they make you feel. The S2K gives you the 6-Figure sports car experience for a fraction of the price, and typically, significantly more reliability. S2K for the win!!

    That GT3 is the epitome of learning how to drive and respect an older 911 and how dynamically different a rear engine car is compared to front engines. It's all about where the weight is. 911's require Patience on corner entry because the front is light and will want to push, but then aggressive on corner exit with all the weight and grip in the back. It's reverse driving style with front engines. Weight being over front wheels you can be more aggressive on corner entry, but then patient on throttle corner exit with the rear end being light.. This is also a good example of why some cars tuned for the smooth surface of a track, can not be trusted on bumpy canyon roads. Had the roads been smooth, I think your assessment would have been way more favorable to the GT3, but in this comparison, I agree with you, it was just not a good road to exploit the GT3 and it's tall gearing. A better, smoother road to stretch it's legs would have been more enjoyable in the GT3.

I have driven the newer Porsches too, and although they have improved and are faster, I just like the simplicity of the older cars. They are still that good, especially with a few mods to make them a bit more special. 👍

    @@apolloandratti7922 I kind on "met" Zygrene/Fenton on Rennlist through a series of posts he did when struggling with his 997.1 and the jerky throttle issues he experienced with that car. Then I started following his channel to see his progress on solving that issue. It's too bad that car left a poor ownership experience for him, but I do appreciate his insights in driving other cars. I admit I am a bit envious of how he has gotten to drive so many other peoples Porsches. Especially the many different generations of GT3's. That is a very rare thing to experience, even for long term Porsche owners. I think he is doing a great job with the channel and hope it continues to grow for him. 👍

    I always tell people, I was very surprised sitting in the 996 turbo to find the Honda had a nicer interior, better shifter, and overall better steering feel. The engine of course in the Porsche was phenomenal. But it’s hard to argue the s2000 isn’t a competitor.

    Porsche was in big financial trouble at the time, so Toyota stepped in and helped them with the 996 interior design. I agree, the S2000 has a cooler cabin, but I don't think the 996's interior is nearly as bad as everyone says, way overblown. I think it's a very nice place to be, I prefer it to the 997.

    Owned both before, both are fantastic cars, and both have flaws. I’d say e46m3 is more usable (because of the size), but the s2k is a more special car as a toy

    Stock 986 and 987 are a bit too soft to offer the edgy fun of an S2K, tighten them up some and the mid engine balance offers a unique experience

    I feel like with all the parts thrown at the 996 it doesn't seem setup well at all. Does the owner know who decided to spec the rates and valving for the Motons? I know it's a track setup, but I would think with a motorsport coilover you would see a little better management over the bumps even on the mountains. My JRZs you reviewed in the M3 video didn't behave anywhere near the same. I wonder if a big part of this is suspension tuners for the 996 when it was first developed were mostly prevalent in Europe where their circuits are significantly different than ours here with much better pavement. The other biggest issue I see in the GT3 is the alignment, as you mentioned in one of the comments it is setup at -1.5 F. My GT3 is on bone stock alignment and even with RWS I get an absurd amount of understeer on track. Without dynamic camber adjustment in the front and no RWS the 996 is falling flat. The car absolutely needs -2.5 or so up front.

    100% agree. Those are not track or even fast road settings for a 996 GT3. Camber needs to be closer to -3 (or ideally even more) up front, with some rake added for the front end to come alive.

    Thanks for this comparison. I've had my s2k for 12+ years - it's heavily track modified, but still driven to and from events. The 996 gt3 has been a dream car for me, and this was an eye opening comparison, albeit slightly biased (but still good). Wish the gt3 was on better more modern rubber - super sports were discontinued a long time ago, and even in their prime werent a top street/track tire. I think that was the only thing missing from making this apples to apples. Still an excellent comparison review, thanks for putting it together 👍.

    Try an AP1 s2000 vs a modified older air cooled 911 (pre-89). Do a raw ness score.

    Hey Fenton! Just a quick question. How does the GR86 compare to the M2 (OG) on the street? Is more fun and involving the 86 at legal speeds? I can't decide between the two😅

    Great question. Sounds like a future video topic. I've only driven an OG M2 once, but I remember it being quite fun. Less nimble and tossable than the GR86 but the extra ~150hp is nice. Feels a bit like the child of a pony car and a lightweight sportscar, whereas the Toyota provides a purer and more direct driving experience.

    Looks like the front of the GT3 is way too firm. Mine has Moton and 2.3/2.1 front rear cambers and it drives like a tarmac rally car on the road (and still good on track)

    I don’t know how the moton is setup in the gt3, but for any 996 I have drove with coil over, 99% is not dialed in correctly for the street. It’s either a street setup or road course, there is no between setup as their window of specifications is too small. For canyon roads, a stock suspension gt3 will be almost always better by significantly chance since no one dialed coilover correctly most of time

    @@Zygrene imho 996 is still more somewhat more similar to those air cooled philosophy and retain a lot more of the rear engine weight characteristics since this is Porsche first time doing water cooled engine. They didn’t have all the budget to modernize and dial out rr driving characteristics yet. 997 even it’s the same general platform but those subframe pick up point and control arms all be revised to neuter the widow maker tendencies so it’s easier to drive like a normal fr car. I guess spend enough money one can dial the 996 like 997 by changing whole bunch stuff but what the point at that just buy 997 gt3 at that point, or even 991.1 since might be cheaper

    When it comes to measuring dynamics and "feel" this was not an oddball comparison. Both cars are rwd, light, rev over 8k, and have soul... I had a 996 C2 as a track/street car for 3 years and although it's not a GT3 what you say about the front end is true. You have to brake hard INTO the corner and demand the axle to grip. That driving style of hard late braking is what made my transition into my AP1 seamless. I brake the same way on track but just later as there's less mass to slow down. Both cars are sub-3,000 pound momentum cars. I would wager they cover the same ground at equal pace. The 996 has the torque, where the s2000 will almost always have a slightly higher minimum apex speed. That may make the s2000 feel faster but Porsche magic is why it's still worth 3x more. Nice vid

    Before I bought a Porsche, I had a quick drive in a friend's 996 at the point when I owned an S2000. The 996 had a notable push on turn-in, where the Honda was pretty neutral. Trail braking probably would have cured the push but that wasn't a thing on a road in a city. I wonder if that is a trait Porsche dialed into the basic setup for 996s. I wound up with a 987 Boxster; none of the ones I tested or my current car have anything like the push that 996 had. On the steering feel, did the owner say anything about the caster or camber settings on the car? That could be a factor that would be readily changed. Based on the suspension being so stiff with standard street tires, the owner of that 996 may have made some very unusual choices in setting up that car.

    @@Zygrene Reducing front camber will have an effect on turn-in. The other thing is that if that the owner lowered the car with the shock change, that could mess with suspension settings. Your impression of the car isn't the way a 996 GT3 should behave. Something probably wasn't right with that car.

    The 996 especially has an inherent understeer characteristic due to the weight distribution (37/63) and subsequently light front end. Each successive 911 has dialled it out a bit by adding size/trackwidth and a little mass to the front end but not so much as to remove the 911 'ness. The 987 by comparison has a much more balanced weight distribution (46/54) due to the engine placement which means less understeer (but also slightly less rear traction).

    @@z32luvr wrong. This is not a level playing field as that 996 is far from set up correctly. These GT3s were literally a race car with suspension settings dialed back to accommodate the general in-experienced driver. That GT3 would leave the S2000 for dead with the right tyres and a track alignment.

    I wonder if you'd say the same about turning while heavy on the throttle in a 4, C4S, or Turbo. I don't experience this in my C4S, just grip for days. Also I don't know how fair it is to say the s2k has a more favorable grip situation. It makes around half the power, of course it does.

    Not knocking the review or video but not one ☝️ person on earth 🌍 every complained about a gt3’s steering till the 992 came out with double wishbone front suspension. Check every gt3 generations reviews and they all raved about the car, it’s feel, and handling. Hell, I can’t remember one car ever besting a gt3 in a head to head review or shootout and every other car had double wishbone front suspension

    @@petert7807 The obvious criticism with the S2000 is the electric steering vs the hydraulic on the Cayman. If Honda had stuck with hydro for a little longer the S2000 might just have been perfect!

    You’re driving a platform (S2K) you know well and prefer, on the type of roads that allow the same platform to shine. It seems like this 996 GT3 and the 5th gen Viper (from a prior review) are somewhat disadvantaged as they do not reflect the driving style that you’re accustomed to, driving on the roads that do not allow them to show their respective strengths. I do enjoy your overall content as your enthusiasm for driver’s cars are evident, but these comparison videos provide viewers a skewed perspective.

    not necessarly, driving the cars on the exact same road and comparing it to a car he very well knows might be a very good way to compare how other cars stand on that road and to have a benchmark. As most of the owners drive those cars on winding roads, not always on tracks, it also gives a good impression of that.

    @@binskee677 a 20+ celcius, a “cold” r compound will still have way more grip than a PSS. Slowing down for traffic momentarily should not be enough to expose the operating temperature of the tyre, especially on public roads where it’s near impossible to find the limit of such a tyre without risking big.

    @@porschenut9 yea totally agree 20+ celcius it's fine, but it's much harder to reach the operating temp without driving like a hoonigan and i don't mean stopping for traffic i mean getting stuck behind a very slow car without the opportunity to overtake on some twisty roads. I live in Switzerland our mountain roads are much narrower and tighter than in the US, it's not rare that you don't have a safe spot to overtake for a couple of kilometers, especially with a car which is not very fast on the straights. IMO a UHP tires like a Micheline Pilot Sport 4s or the older Super Sport is better for some B road driving and also safer as some places will have some wet spots on the road and sudden rainfall won't be an issue. Maybe i'm just driving to slowly haha but i doubt that

    I'm as much of a Porsche GT lover as I am a Honda RWD lover. I ranked a stock 997.1 GT3 quite a bit higher than even this expertly modified S2K. Maybe it's due to the way this 996.2 is set up (the Moton shocks didn't soak up bumps nearly as well as the JRZ) or inherent qualities of the platform, but the 997 gen is vastly better from a driving dynamics perspective, in my view.

    @@Zygrene fair enough.. but I've noticed KZread car communities are like cookie cutter every car reviews always end up the same: They drive the hyped up car to a caynon road it usually goes like this: "this engine comes alive when you ring it out, I wish it was manual; more engaging, more fun, it's not all about straight line speed, naturally aspirated engine wow, blah blah blah" But majority of people who buys these sporty cars doesn't live near canyon roads, specially in States most of these cars get driven in suburban roads full of traffic stops. These days hardly anybody takes their car to a track..

    Technically it's a mid engine car as the engine in the front is placed behind the front axcels so a front-mid engine car. But yea that layout might be not as bad to drift as a rear or mid engine car it'st still not advantageus.

    Calling a highly modified S2K a car that is only 1/3 the cost of a GT3 is Slightly disingenuous. You have to acct for all of the aftermarket mods and labor. Odd comparison, as are many “my modded Japanese car is ‘better’ than your stock higher priced car”. Well played 👏 it’s about the 1 billionth time it’s been done

    S2k in general is not very well sold or famous in Europe, but there are a view handful enthusiasts. Also tracks in Europe are mostly very fast tracks and very reliant on power with some exceptions in france. Japan and the US on the other hand also have very tight (almost like enlarged go kart tracks) where cars like an S2k shines. Also Suspension geometry and construction is much more advanced than the Porsche back then with double wishbones.
