As a younger millennial i still remember and have seen how "ugly" people looked in 2000s so i can't follow this Y2k trend. Nope, still looks ugly to me. Maybe for gen Z it's something like how i look at 90s fashion.

Those low rise jeans, the thong sticking out...combined with a big ugly belt. Don't forget the "hats" and nothing matched. Jesus Christ..
Carolina Herrera looked so flawless and in her element in that dress. And I absolutely love the reference and how she honored it. Very thoughtful and elegant. Love.
Someone needs to say it Carolina Herrera is a very smart and elegant woman.

You don't mean to tell me that Sheryl Crow is wearing Ralph Lauren. That off the rack looking horror that appears to have come from JCPenney??? Her bust isn't even supported on her left side, completely uneven bustline. I can't get over it. Oh my goodness, Ralph!
Please continue to do roasts of prior decades fashions! It's fun to see what people were wearing back then.
People love to talk trash of the fashion of today, saying it was better before... but this is the proof that things were not necessary better before 💀💀
"I respect where we are coming from, but I don't like where we went"...HauteLeMode regarding fashion worn by Gemma Ward at the 2004 MET Gala. Luke never disappoints! I love the idea of showing unidentified guests who GET IT.
"The early 2000's socialites needed to be stopped and nobody did it, and that's really sad". Luke, you simply are the best!!! Love your work!🔥🔥🔥🔥

Luke - love your videos! The woman in the black dress you thought was "cute" was Pat Buckley (RIP), wife of arch conservative author and television commentator William F. Buckley. She was a real NYC social icon back in the day. She chaired the Met gala for several years, and I think that she was one of Truman Capote's "swans." Damn you for making me feel ancient for remembering this. 🙂
Anne looks to me like a Lady of the court who just got caught have a passionate “dangerous liaison” in a dark hallway. She had to hastily wrap up in a sheet and the hair… is 1700’s “post coital bed-head” and I love it ❤❤
This is so fun to watch. Im glad you pointed out that people didn't necessarily dress on theme at the time. This represents so much of the side of fashion that is ironically hilarious. As an art form that has one of the largest groups of followers across the globe, it is REMARKABLY difficult to get people to move outside of their comfort zone. They like to watch OTHERS do it, but not take part. It is, in fact, extremely conservative in nature. It's why the pageantry, the industry of models and masquerade exist in such a large part... and why those who DO take part enthusiastically are so celebrated. It's also very high school. Asking Amber to be more costume was their way of educating guests and media... albeit without fabulous execution. The general response shows how 'mean girl' the majority would behave to stepping up. Thirty years in this industry and I still roll my eyes on the daily. Just a few notes. Isaac's slides are a bit trademark for his personal "out and about". He's always maintained a very casual middle finger approach to what he's 'meant to do'. He's the most laid back punk personality you'll find. But that's why he's fashion. The liquid silk satin sheath inspired dresses were all a nod to the slip / negligé. The theme inspired a lot of lingerie type ideas. That's why that seam was visible, it was meant to be a cheeky "it's not a gown, it's an undergarment" statement. That was about as on theme as people got then. Anne was wearing a variation of a smocked dress that EVERYONE was wearing at the time. I wish I could remember who wore it most memorably so I could look it up. Someone important wore one in green that was all the media could talk about. The smocking and the ribbon was meant to reference ballet or some such. Can't remember but I promise, it was having a moment. I was obsessed with a pink version so I remember enough to know she wasn't a one off with that look. 😂

Amber's skirt is based on the Bayeux Tapestry, basically it's a tapestry about the Norman conquest of England
Renee Zellweger was a Carolina Herrera muse at the time so that dress is probably Carolina.
I would love a video of you going through your bookshelf.
RIP Anne Heche
I feel like most people took dangerous liaisons as a theme literally like sex, affair, etc instead of the French reference that the met intended
Loved this throwback! Amazing how the entrance presentation has improved since 2004 - so weird to see ugly, wet concrete & barriers
I would love for Anna to shock us all and change her hairstyle 😮
The robe hamish bowles is wearing is referencing the banyan, a type of 18-19th century eastern inspired robe/loungewear

This makes me long for how simple things were back then. The 90s and 2000s fashion is such a lovely hit of nostalgia for me and the people trying to do Y2K fashion now have no idea what they're actually doing. The Anne H(A)che look will be renting space in my head for weeks.

And she was Jean Grey. Phoenix didn't come until much later.
There's an entire video about the outfit Marie Antionette wore that inspired the dress at 39:00. It was actually a sort of "cottage core" outfit meant to imitate the simpler peasant style of dress so that she would seem more relatable to the common people.
This was rough - but so entertaining. I really liked the guest round since Gala pics generally just show celebs now (Socialites still attend, right? Maybe Page Six makes room for them among the stars?). Unrelated, has the black bag featuring what looks like Calcifer been discussed yet?

Cheryl Crow was dating Lance Armstrong at the time and made every effort to wear yellow to remind everyone. She was also very interested in choosing garments that reminded people that even though she is 10 years older than him she still "had it." I have no idea why the turquoise but I have to expect it was simply the only dress that checked the boxes she cared about in an pinch.
What's weird is that random guests whom may not be celebrites are the ones serving looks than the celebrities getting photographed.

I absolutely love your honest to the fashion gods commentary, Tim Blanks definitely watches ;p
Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette would have been in pre-production during this. I wonder if there was a lot of buzz and they decided to hop on an early train. Odd they asked someone to be here when I don’t remember Antoinette being in Dangerous Liaisons. But it’s been a while since I saw it.
I remember when this happened, Natalie Portman was on many best dressed looks with that green gold get up.
Lol - as soon as you lead with Amber Valletta, I knew the video had to be old, who knew 20 years old! damn!!!
Twenty years ago the whole set-up looked really pedestrian. no carpet or glamorous tent, no fancy fences or anything. concrete floor, cheap plastic tent, temporary metal fencing and that's it.
Terrific!, Sensational! Perfectly right on. I need more.
Was the 2004 theme 'shiny satin'? 😂

Satin type fabrics were very in then
I want to say the Renée Zellweger reference is the fact that wealthy people in the French court, actually would take pieces of gold that had been sewn in as an employ and things like that and one of their past times was to pick it out after all these people spent all this incredible amount of time embroidering this real goldinto their outfits and they would sell it back so I’m wondering if that’s where the reference was not 100% sure that to me seems like it might be
This walk down memory lane was fantastic! I'm definitely here for more if you decide to to them. Loved the guest round and have to agree -- rich people need to spend money based on my approval. 😜

I searched you up cuz I won’t want to be spoiled by the outfits of the met gala 2024 unless it’s you reacting to it. Your videos were the whole reason I even knew what the Galas are even about.
The coat/robe situations on Talley and Bowles are referencing the banyan which is a lounge suit with matching large robe and waistcoat or sometimes just the robe that was kind of the bathrobe of the day. They would be worn in intimate company like family and good friends while entertaining in your apartments or at your home.
