2003 Mitsubishi Montero vs 1998 Toyota 4Runner

Ойын-сауық

www.myzippycar.com/
Part 1 video from the trip to Ocotillo Wells, California.
We took bone stock 3rd Generation 1998 Toyota 4runner Limited 4x4 with a rear diff lock and lightly modified 3rd Gen 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Limited 4x4.
On the first part of the trip, Montero was definitely a leader. Toyota 4 runner had troubles with sandy roads.

The traction control based 4WD on those old Gen 3 Monteros was way ahead of it's time. It's basically what Land Rover puts in the New Defender except Mitsubishi was there 20 years earlier.

The montero has a locking center diff, and limited slip rear diff. and about 40 more torque. You can put the same tires on both and the Montero is still going to do better. A locking rear diff was available on the 3rd gen 4runner but most likely this person didn't have it. Out of the box the Montero is going to be more capable than the 4runner in most conditions but modify both with a modest lift locking diffs and they will both do different things better. The montero with the 40 more torque and full independent suspension should always excel in the desert. Around 3:10 you can also see the mitsubishi's traction control working. The break is being applied to the passenger front tire, so instead of the power going to the wheel on the open diff with the least traction its artificially making the other wheel with the most traction the one with the least resistance. Many Montero guys give the traction control on the 03-06 monties good reviews. The montero isn't the best 4x4 out there, but its the best for 5k.

@@FirstnameLastname-ni9uh So you can't go offroad with fully independent suspension? That's a interesting thought. I wonder how the Pajero evo has won more Paris to Dakar races than any other vehicle with its independent front and rear suspension🤔.. You don't have to be rock crawling to be off roading.. Also, if you ever watch king of the hammers races(mix between rock crawling and high speed desert racing) fully independent rigs are becoming more and more popular. I kinda understand where u are coming from, but there's more that determines a vehicles capability than if it's got solid axles or not.

Mitsubishi is years ahead from Toyota developing ass-kicking off-road vehicles. For example, the Mitsubishi Pajero (a variant of the Montero) is the maximum winner of the rally Paris-Dakkar. So sad Mitsubishi don't sell Montero in the USA. Hope to find an old one to buy it.
