2001 Nissan Pathfinder stuck on Defrost Mode - bad actuator

If your Pathfinder's air conditioning or climate control system is stuck on Defrost, then it's possible that your "Mode Door Motor" or "Mode Door Actuator" has gone bad. This actuator controls which vents are used. This is different from the "Blend Door Actuator" which controls how much hot and cool air is blended together to help control the temperature. Fortunately this one is easy to get to!

I live in the interior region of British Columbia. My pathfinder is my winter car and the other day my vents got stuck on the forward vents. Had to get a ride to work cause I couldn't defrost my windshield. You just saved me a lot of stress and rode mooching. Thank you for this video

Thank you for this video. My 1997 Nissan Maxima had the same problem and the location was about the same. This fix it.

This only controls the air flow not the tempature? My a.c. is blowing hot it did it before I whacked the dash and blew cold until 3 days ago...any ideas?

One possibility is the other actuator.. the "Blend Door Actuator". It's much more difficult to get to though. What it does is control the vents that mix (or blend) the hot and cold air to achieve the temperature you desire. Sometimes when this actuator is bad you can hear a clicking noise coming from inside the dash. Here's someone else's video about his experience replacing it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5xkqJqwc7ynpqg.html

I know this is old but would you think its the same location for a 2001 Altima. Its stuck on defrost as well.

I can't say for sure, but I think it is. I did find a post on the Maxima forums from someone who replaced their mode door motor in their '99 Maxima and he shared a photo showing it was on the driver's side up behind the dash in the same area. From what I can tell online, the Maxima and Altima's HVAC are pretty similar. Now make sure you double and triple check this but it looks like the part is "Nissan 27731-2L900 Mode Actuator Assembly" . If you search for "maxima forums Mode Door Motor Replacement 27731-2L900" the post on the forum should be at the top of your search results. It looks like a pretty good write-up with good photos. Yours might be almost identical or close enough for it to be helpful. Thanks for watching and posting!

I believe that one is called the "Air Mix Actuator Assembly". It looks like there is more than one depending on your year and trim level, and features.. etc. So make SURE you double check that it fits your vehicle before spending around $200 on this part! Some sites ask you to enter your VIN to see if the part will fit your vehicle. NissanPartsDeal is where I bought my part. Here's are 2 similar, but slightly different parts.. you'll have to see if one of these fits your Pathfinder before purchasing. One is more expensive than the other too. www.nissanpartsdeal.com/parts/nissan-actuator-assy-air-mix~27732-1w601.html?vin=&make=Nissan&model=Pathfinder&year=2001&submodel=&extra1=&extra2=&filter=()&location=pd:270_002,27733N www.nissanpartsdeal.com/parts/nissan-actuator-assy-a~27732-44b00.html?vin=&make=Nissan&model=Pathfinder&year=2001&submodel=&extra1=&extra2=&filter=()&location=pd:270_002,27733N Or search for "Air Mix Actuator Assembly". Shop around too!!! You may be able to find it cheaper somewhere else!! I wish you the best of luck. I hope this helps! Also.. don't just take my word on all of this. I'm certainly no expert so double check EVERYTHING. These parts are expensive. I'd hate to hear you spent a bunch of money on a part only to find out it's the wrong one.

@Juan Hernandez that's a tricky one. It's hard to get to and you might have to take apart the dash to get to it. It's also known as the "blend door actuator". I can't describe where it is well enough to be useful. I've tried searching for some instructions or a nice schematic but I didn't find one. This video is similar but not exactly right but it should give you an idea of what you would be dealing with: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5xkqJqwc7ynpqg.html
