2000s Jaguar XJ8 Problem Resolution: NO START, WON'T CRANK

It's winter, and my 2003 Jaguar XJ8 (99k miles) has been reacting badly to the cold. First it did not properly auto unlock the other day at the gas station, locking me out. And then I came out the other morning to start it up and it was dead - no crank, no start. After spending some time charging the battery, thinking that either it was failing in the cold weather or there was some other electrical issue, I discovered the key I had been using - my spare key - had mysteriously stopped working. This is the first time I've ever had a failed security KEY be the reason a vehicle would not crank. The keys have embedded security features, but apparently this one has gone bad. Maybe other Jaguar owners will be helped seeing this. Luckily, I had two keys, so I can still drive it, but no fun knowing I'm down to just one key.

As someone else mentioned...lube the tumblers in the switch...PB Blaster instead of WD. Go online and look up the sequence to reset the security system. For background: the keys have a resistor in them that triggers the security system to allow power to go to starter, when the sides get worn on a primary key, they don't make good contact and will not work. I have bypassed these before and I have also put a small blob of solder on each side of a key to make it work again. Get a resistance reading first or the dealer will charge you huge bucks to figure out which key/resistor you have if you ever need another new key. Since your new key is not working, but the old one is again, I would suspect worn and stuck tumblers in the lock before anything else. Another item you can check since it is an intermittent problem...most of these systems have 2 wires that connect to the back of the lock assembly...those wires turn everytime you turn the key and eventually break off, but may still make intermittent contact whenever they happen to fall into the right position. Since you have defeated your neutral/park safety switch by breaking the shifter assembly...that of course could be the problem also...wiggle the stick while trying to start and see if that helps. You can also bypass the key resistor all together by getting a resistor reading off of the key, buying a resistor of that value or +-10% and finding the two wires that come out of the steering column at the bottom and go into a connector...put the resistor across the two wires/connector going back into the vehicle harness (not up into the column)...you will no longer need a chipped key, though they still will be used, and your security system will be bypassed (Actually circuit completed with right resistor reading going to the alarm control box so completing the circuit needed)so your doorlock problem may go away at the same time.

I just replaced the guts of my Acura key. My main key just seemed to get tired; not transmit very far, take multiple tries to unlock the door(s), etc. Backup key worked fine. After I replaced the electronic part of the key, the mechanical part had to be re-synched to the ignition, which on the Acura is really easy. At first I thought you had a parasitic drain caused by a defective relay. These things sometimes slowly leak to ground and everything in the car is dead the next time you try and start it ... even though the battery and charging hardware all seem to work just fine. In the Acura it was an AC relay sticking closed which meant I was probably working the heck out of my compressor with the clutch always engaged.

I'm in NY, so when I went to Florida a few years back, my motel had RFID card for the key to get in and if I had too close to my phone when my NFC was on, the card would not work and it cleared the card. Reset the codes or disconnect the battery and press on the brake to get rid of any electrical charge the reconnect it. The key may have to be re-programmed. Your computer or one of them may be failing.

What do you expect Brad? It's British! Over here in the UK it is one of those things. The keys are not powered at all, they use induction to operate in the same way as the swipe cards on door entry systems. The Key is passive and the car senses the correct rfid chip and disables the immobiliser. Sounds like your spare has been blocked out by the car and needs to be re-enabled to work.

  • 4 жыл бұрын

Is there a battery in the key that powers the immobiliser? If so, could be the spare is dead. Or if a chip, could it have been affected by a strong magnet on the safe?

I bought a second key fob for my 2004 Totyota Avalon and you have to go through a bizarre sequence to have the key be recognized by the car - something like turn the key on/off 3 times, hit the brake pedal 6 times, etc but it eventually worked. Can't explain why the key went dead but look up how to reprogram a key to your jag.

More than likely, the transponder in the spare key isnt working correctly. The key turns in the ignition tumbler because its mechanical. But, my educated guess is the chip in it has lost it's pairing with the receiver in the dash. I had a similar problem with a 2001 XJ8L. Had the keys reprogrammed and it was gravy afterwards. Also, coolant and washer fluid is cheap. Take care of your ride and it'll take care of you.

the not shifting is prob the park shift interrupt solenoid, which could be causing the no crank no start issue. Have you tested the battery in your keyfobs? Some cars rely on that to send a signal to the cars security. Might not hurt to blow out the ignition switch cylinder, but be careful spraying liquids in the lock cylinder as it can short the security switch and really cause problems.

There are transponders in the keys that are coded to the ECU. If they are not recognized correctly, the car won't start. Because your car has an autosensing system to unlock the doors, i would also suspect that there is something wrong with them. For an old car like this i would recommend to buy a Jaguar diagnostic system (there are also JLR knock offs) to read the DTCs and check what is wrong. Maybe guys in a Jaguar forum can help.

There's a chip in the key, that is matched to your car. I think your 'host' of problems comes down to the engine management light which is on. There are obviously some issues with it. Best thing is to take it to a dealer or a garage that you're happy with and get them to put their laptop on it, and reset the codes. I think then, you will probably find that your spare key which came with the car, will most likely work . . .Good luck!

Seems to me that the transponder in your extra key is bad. Sometimes you can simply put the key with the working transponder directly underneath the lock cylinder while attempting to start the car with the inop key. It might help narrow things down.

  • @richardshort3914
    @richardshort39143 жыл бұрын

The key has a transponder. It 'reflects' a startup code back to the car, indicating it is coded to that specific vehicle. Try this first: Try to start the card with the 'bad' key while holding the 'good' key in the same hand. If it starts, the system is reading the 'good' key your transponder is defective or missing. If defective, you can have it reprogrammed by the dealer, or any competent locksmith that specializes in automotive repairs. If missing: Look for a small, round indentation at the top of the key, about the size of a pencil lead. If there is a tiny hole, the transponder has fallen out. (I have never heard of this happening, but I suppose it's possible.) Tibbes keys are available online, complete with a 'generic' transponder. You'll have to have the key cut by the specialist before it's sent to you. (It is very inexpensive.)

Brad, you know how electronics work when they get old - grounds go bad. I suspect you have a ground issue at some point, possibly intermittent, and the ECU is not sensing signal correctly. That could explain the low coolant level, low squirter juice level, RFID transponder having sensitivity issues (the possible cause of one key not working) and so on. I'd pull the ECU harness and look for corrosion. I bet you are going to find a common cause for a lot of the electrical issues. Good luck!

I'd consider just getting all those error codes cleared. My 01 230SLK has a fun trick of slamming on the front right brake for half a second once in every journey but if you go and get the error codes cleared, not just the main ones but in the sub-menus too then it doesn't do it for months. Could there be a battery in that key? I'm pretty sure not looking at the answers below. I like the idea of checking the physical dimensions of the key, see if it's worn. Looks like a simple resistance check is involved. Keep your lovely Jag mate and get a shitter for just in case. By the time you'd fixed it up so you could sell it you'd have a lovely car worth keeping. Could you imagine enjoying a 300C after an XJ8?

Food for thought Brad, Had a no start prob with my dads car, Mechanic came out with his code reader couldn't get it started. He did say that the code he had was saying the the injectors where in operation as if engine was running, Erasing codes just didn't work, I know its not the same as your problem Also I'm saying it might not work for you, I just disconnected battery for at least a day ,I was thinking Cap's in the the brain/ module holding charge, Connected battery again and it started with no engine check light

@Mark Swarbrick They used to be REALLY British, but now the cars are actually mostly made elsewhere, and in fact are not really jags at all. Take a quick look at what they really are and you might be surprised (and dismayed lol)

Maybe try taking it to a locksmith to see if they can reprogram the key to the car. Or you may have to buy a new key and have it programed to the car. Good luck with it anyway.

Have you tried programming the key like they do with an x-type of the same year? Open door Turn from 1 to 2 on ignition four times then push button on key then close door I think .. check on youtube. Could also need a new switch behind the lock but I don't know why it would work with one key and not another, that's why I think the rfid chip is the first place to look. There is a youtube of a taxi mechanic saying he has replaced 10 of the key switches recently and it is an easy fix.

With the key that isn't working in the ignition hold the working key as close to the other key in the ignition as possible then try to start it. If it starts then the chip in the non working key is bad
