A beautiful Olympic Gold Medal Gymnast, a certified classical pianist, a straight-A student through high school, a Stanford degree in Biology and now a gradate from Stanford Medical School and a qualified physician / surgeon. What an amazingly gifted you woman. How did she have time to fit it all in!!!? Could her parents possible BE any prouder!!? :D

Not really. She never medaled at worlds. She was not really a contender. A couple of good performances at a couple of minor meets don't make you great. She was pretty much a flop. She was not selected because she was not capable of handling the pressure of the Olympics.

@@foodculture6355 Your knowledge of her career is clearly very limited. She only had one World Championship she was eligible for before 2000, and it came when she began to have problems in her gymnastics. She was fantastic in 1997 and 1998 - had she been eligible in 1997 and had there been a World Championships in 1998 (there hasn't been a year without them *since then*) - she almost certainly would have had at least a couple World medals. She was very successful at the 1998 Goodwill Games. The timing of her peak years was unfortunately, terrible for her. Sounds like you didn't follow her career at the time, and have just clicked on a few KZread videos.

Dominique Daws always so poised, elegant, and mature. Even presented herself this way when she was young. She is such a beautiful, strong, classy woman; well spoken, intelligent and a great mentor for young female athletes. She interviews well and doesn’t use repetitive, nonsense clutch words such as ‘like’ and ‘fun’. My parents corrected me each time I misspoke when I was growing up. At the time I disliked it very much. I was frustrated, especially as a teen, that my parents never let speech and language skills slide. Today I am so grateful. Today, my kids don’t like it when I correct them.

Dominique got totally screwed over. The pressure from Bella to perform was haunting her. He made her do a bar routine in front of her teammates at warm ups like 16 times when she was 14. She said her hands were on fire they were burning so bad. The Karolyi's didn't care if she got injured or competed injured. In 1996 the reason she fell on her vaults was she had some kind of injury in a bone in her leg or something. They wouldn't give it enough time to heal and then she has to train and warm up at the Olympics. I think it was a stress fracture.

Vanessa Atler on floor and beam were always just fantastic (though funny enough, her floor routine was recycled by Valeri for his own daughter Nastia in 2008, you know, when she won gold?) and it's such a shame how her career ended. So many of these girls are obviously anxious because of everything going on behind the scenes, not only in their personal life but how they were trained. I'm enjoying the nostalgia of watching old school gymnastics but it is appalling just how underweight those girls were. Especially if you go back to like 1990-1996. And even MORE appalling was when they used to blast their weight on the screen. 2000 seems to be when that shift towards compact, muscular shapes became to trickle in. Mental health may still be treated like shit in our society in regards to athletes but at least gymnasts of all *healthy* shapes and sizes are represented.

Yeah she would be amazing on the 2008 team. She could literally replace both Sam and Bridget, as both would be irrelevant with Vanessa around. She could do 3 events in team finals, leaving Sacramone probably to do only vault, and they would be fine now with Memmel doing only bars. They could focus on trying to get a super bars specialist to do bars over Johnson for the last spot now and more would see that was their only way on the team and would focus on that as she should have (eg Ashley Preiss) rather than pointlessly, foolishly, overfocusing on the AA.

If you think about it, she was in the right quad. Amanar, Raducan and Zamo all had less than stellar bar routines and yet were major contenders. Atler was in the same camp, in my opinion. She didn’t need a spectacular bar routine, she just needed help to get her past the mental block. She needed to be like Aly Raisman, get through bars and excel on the other 3 events and Atler would’ve been right up there with the leaders.

I'll never forget how shocking it was when Vanessa Atler first came onscreen during this event. Bloated and looked severely depressed. A total mess. Wasn't even the same person that had competed in previous years. Her parents shouldn't have allowed her to compete at Nationals and she shouldn't have been within a light year of the Olympic trials.

Skill-wise she deserved to be there. Not sure what "bloated" has to do with anything - Vanessa was never stick thin and she didn't have to be - her muscular body was the reason why her gymnastics was so powerful. An 18-year old woman whose puberty was likely delayed due to her training grew bigger since the last time you saw her? No way!
