    Can you move next door to me? We can share the fuel costs. I have a very, very soft spot for the 3516s, very reliable engines even when pushed to 2.7MW (or even 2.75MW for a short amount of time). The C-175 is practically silent and now I have no idea if we're testing or on the gennies as there's no turbo scream that you can hear 2 miles away.

    Built a power plant for the Navy. We had two of these beasts installed about 6 feet apart. When they were running, it was so loud, you could actually feel the sound vibrations in your chest. And they had remote radiators, so no radiator fans on the engine. Even with ear plugs, plus ear muffs, they were LOUD!

    the gearbox and clutch will melt at this load , mining trucks with this engine use electric drive train like a diesel electric locomotive they have ac motors mounted to the wheels and the throttle controls the frequency of ac wave into the motor which is generated by an inverter in older days the motors were dc and generator field would be controlled to increase or decrease power but the control was limited with that setup . mechanical drive is not possible at these powers only hydro and electric can handle this reliably ..

    I saw a demonstration a few years ago, where the genset can be synced with the grid to feed back in to the grid during times of high demand. Just needs a minuscule change in speed for a split second to match up. It’s a measure of how accurate feeling is that it can run a continuous speed that is so precise.

  • @Stasiek_Zabojca

    @Stasiek_Zabojca

    Once it's synced, then power grid will keep it synced. If so small generator (compared to big power grid) was about to lose sync, it will start being pulled by the grid to catch up. Theoretically in extreme condition, if you kept generator connected but shut down the engine, it could start acting like a motor to turn the engine.

    Swap the alternator for the 138kv model and you could hook this straight up to the substation transformer and power the whole city haha.

    Directly, no, you'd need a transformer to take the 277V 3 phase/480V per phase output and drop it to 120/240V single phase first.

    Since I’m not in the Business I got one question. Is it normal that these engines are not given a bit of time without load to warm up? Or are they constantly heated?

    Depends on the application. Places like hospitals, will have regular tests of their backup generators. In the case of modern hospitals, they have battery banks/inverters as initial power. Then the generator(s) kick in after a few minutes (configurable) to keep the batteries topped up/supply additional loads.

    They use block/coolant heaters to maintain a minimum temperature (ours at work are set for 120 deg F) so you're not truly starting from cold unless ambient outside temps are down near/below freezing on a generator mounted outside. This is a skid mount which would be mounted either inside the building or have a sound dampening enclosure mounted over it if installed outside.

    I have worked in hospitals where the time to online to a dead bus had to be less than 10 seconds. Normally they'd start and pick up load in 7 seconds. I have also worked in islands where these 3500 series are the main power source and from start to sync and load averaged under 30 seconds. All have block heaters to keep them close to operating temp.
