@Hugh Masakela I'm referring to an article in the LA Times back then. The writer, whoever he was had suggested that the cold air was hard on the engines. True or not, I was present at that race and engines were constantly blowing.

@Hugh Masakela Interesting that you have an engineering background. My RX 7 R1 engine blew because of its turbos. I learned that it was a problem in these cars. A interested party that wanted to buy it for racing told me that he takes the turbos out for track racing because you'll blow the engine. Anyway, wish that reporter talked to you.

Cold air would actually make the engine work better. The engineers probably retarded the ignition more anticipating the cooler air to help revent detination and get more fuel and air in the cylinders but probably once the blocks were heat soaked it was too much block pressure.

I remember watching this race. It rained out on Sunday and they finished the race on Monday, that's why the stands were so empty. Back then California used to sell out, when they were still fan friendly. I remember being "sick" that day and I stayed home from school to watch the race. Only 6 out of 25 drivers ended up finishing this race. Alex Tagliani was the last to guy to retire and finished 6th ahead of Tarso Marques who was still running.

Back in the late 90's it was Ford Cosworth, Honda, Toyota and of course Penske Mercedes. Indy cars today are just as fast or faster on slow tracks, but take Road America, the fastest road course in the world. Team Green with Franchetti ran a 1.28 1n 1998 while 2016 race the pole time was 1.34. Four seconds is huge.

They recently did. Check the indycar page. Actually the CART went on downhill just when ESPN decided not to broadcast champcar any longer in 2001. And it kept going that way when Ford remained as the only engine provider for the teams, so they became Champ Car at the end of 2002 when Barry Green, Chip Ganassi and others leaved CART to join IndyCar. Toyota and Honda went together with them.

This race was on a Monday since Sunday was rained out; hence most spectators didn't return. That also explains why so many engines blew; after the Sunday rain delay, all cars had to be "sealed up" (no engine/maintenance work allowed) and then put to race the next day as-is.

But he was still taking some risks no driver can take on an oval. Massa, on the other hand, knows(?last year...) how to be conservative, when needed; while keeping his pace, when possible. And yes, i know A LOT about motorsports, im a mechanic myself, and i spend a lot of my time following the motorsports they actually air in Denmark: F1, GP2, Rallycross, DTC, Formula Renault...

A racing series that runs ovals can never take on Formula 1... Think about it, you can't run ovals wen it's wet because of the dangers. If they kicked out all the oval tracks, THEN they might be able to compete. But running tracks where the weather decides if you race or not, thats just not good enough... Formula 1 has of course cut the Malaysian grand prix short this year because of rain, but that was because the drivers couldn't see where the road was!

The engine companies were pushing the engines so much to 1-up each other the engines simply couldnt handle it..they were running well over 240...In IndyCar now...they're lucky to get 230 mph laps...Honda and Chevy are very conservative with the engines now

+InvisibleTeeth I have heard that teams had to reduce power at certain tracks because the drivers couldn't handle the g-force.

That was at Texas cuz it's high banked and 1.5 miles. It wouldnt be an issue at Indy or Fontana. They had to slow the cars down cuz everytime a Chevy spun it started to fly.

@ATDOINFERNO if you dont follow F1 anymore why you take this as an argument? And what evidence do you have to say that Massa would be better then Hamilton in a oval? Massa is just a average driver........

@PandaTrueno2 1 year ago, I'd say Lewis Hamilton would not be able to complete a single lap on an oval. Massa? Maybe. But they'd take at least a full 3 years to - who knows - match the likes of Franchitti, Dixon, Briscoe and Castroneves. I, for once, don't follow F1 anymore. F1 sucks; single-file exhibition is NOT racing, nor motorsports. Good'ol days...

All the engines lost because they decided to use the hanford device, creating more load on the entire drivetrain, and the aerodynamic instability of the hanford device and tunnel blockers created some of the most dangerous and not even as close racing. If they wanted to keep the speeds down they should have mandated the road course wings on superspeedways without the winglets at least you wouldn't have seen such boring racing.

@ATDOINFERNO Well... It goes both ways, i agree that Hamilton would probably suck on an oval, on the other hand, Castroneves might be a terrible F1 driver! CART and F1 has their own unique challenges, and it's a matter of opinion which one you like most. The worst thing about F1, is how predictable it can be, just take this years season. Red Bull Racing had a far superior car, and it's only technical difficulties that has kept them from clinching both the constructors and drivers title already!

@skynet091287 You don't know shit about motorsports, do you? Think about it a minute: let's say there's a car, be it F1 or CART, that may safely run on an oval with rain (and there isn't). There would have to be a pit stop every 20 laps or so, IF the tires last that long, which I doubt (wet tires over 230mph? HA). Hell, teams would have to spend "USD 1 million" just in wet tires, only to finish a race, that'd be complete nonsense!

Watched Indycar last weekend. Not only has it still got no soul, but the cars (DW12) looks horrible and the racing was as boring and processional as F1. Man I miss these good old days
