2000 BMW 3 Series (E46) Review - A Performance Icon After 20 Years

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The E36 BMW 328CI was a fun, quick and comfortable ride. The problem is that it was also riddled with some BMW quality control issues. With clean automatics well below five grand and manual examples just over that, does it make sense to buy one now? Watch me go in-depth and find out!

Still the first car to steel my heart! My first car was a 10 year old E46 - had my fair bit of maintenance: cooling system, window regulators, the badges also...but I loved it anyway! Really a magical experience driving it - so much so that I’ve had 3 - three series before crossing over to X series cars. Even driving a X6 - I still miss the sporty nature of the E46! What a legend!!

I have a 2003 325i as my first car on a college student budget. Mine was a little more broken than most and my parents helped me for a bit but for the most part, it’s a great car on a budget. It’s a REALLY forgiving car and a great platform to work on . Some things are very finicky when replacing, some things require tools that have autozone employees going on google, and little things like bad rear sway bar bushings throw the whole car off most of the time. Other than being finicky, it’s a little expensive, but a lot of those things can be done DIY, such as all the bushings, suspension, even vanos seals if you’re proficient enough. This car has never left me stranded, and has always snapped heads even being almost 18 years old.

We have a 2003 330ci and have none of the interior shabbiness you found...the secret is keeping it garaged. We can attest that it's had its own cozy garage stall since 2005, before that it was a dealer "brass hat" car. The other thing is it has only 71,000 miles on it, it's our weekend play toy. I've done all the maintenance myself with OEM parts, but no dealer labor costs. We'll probably have it for another 20 years!

I still have my 2001 e46 220Ci. It has cloth seats and the interior remains pristine. The only minor issue is a small amount of rust around the front right hand-side wheel arch. I live in the UK and the car hasn't been garaged for a number of years, by the way. To date, no major repairs, apart from one set of trailing arm bushings and a new coolant reservoir!

Had a e46 330xi Touring manual for 6 years now. Never meant to but it's just perfect for everything. It's fun to drive, it's relatively cheap to run, around 200-300€ in maintenance each year, including oil. Fuel consumption is reasonable. It's big enough to even fit 4 people on a trip. It got the gadgets I want in a car and every single one works, i only replaced the old 4.3 nav with a Android unit. It also doesn't got anoying start stop, a bong for everything, lane shit and so on. I can pull legally 1800kg, enough for my boat and trailer. I literally fly over a speed bump every morning on my way to work and still passes inspection every single year end it's even stiffened and lowered (forget doing that in a Volvo or Toyota without replacing the front end) Oh and it has over 200 000 miles

  • @alexng704
    @alexng704 Жыл бұрын

I have the same year Ci323 with over 180k miles on the clock, 5speed as well. Contrary to what you said, I find the interior of this car is holding up quite well. Nothing is broken and only very little of the plastic paint is peeling off. No rattle, minimum rust even after 20 years of consistent use. I would say the build quality is pretty decent. However, I can't understand, for the life of mine, why would some people call the BMW seats "comfortable". They are far from it, and IMO the worst and most uncomfortable seats in all premium cars. These seats are the single biggest complaint I have with the e46 (or BMWs in general). Love the look of the car, love the driving dynamics, ease of use and the DIY friendliness, but I have to stuck an aftermarket cushion on the driver seat. I admit I might have been spoiled because the previous cars I owned are Saabs, which are known for having some of the most comfortable seats in the business.

Needed suspension, brakes, vacuum leaks fixed, coolant leaks and new timing belt with tensioners. Also wanna note for anyone wanting to buy a E46, the left rear subframe mount issue happens only on manual E46s M/non M due to the subframe mounts and spot welds not handling the force of the clutch drops when clutch dropping hard. my daily is now an 02 330xi, and my summer car is an 89 rx7. Previous cars include a 96 grand marquis, an 05 Jetta, an 89 crx, a 96 mx6, a 95 saturn sw1, a 95 mk3 Jetta a 2000 mk4 GTI (eclectic mix of mostly Japanese and German) ... and man. Do I love my e46. Such a great daily. Especially in northern Canada, where we get mass dumps of snow and garbage driving conditions 6 months a year :P After you sort the common issues with an old ass car (coolant res, DISA, CCV, intake boots, valve cover, VANOS, etc) ... holy hell does it shine. In a heavy snowfall, like today, I can easily scoot past vans and trucks getting bogged down on hills. Newer vehicles. Obviously, winter tires and AWD help a lot. But the powerband on a 3 litre inline6 is just so tasty! She revs to 6000 rpm pulling SO HARD until redline. Even with the automagic trans! And even the (now) archaic traction control is fairly dialed in. Sure, it will display consternation as it flashes angrily at me when I'm requesting a frankly dangerous amount of acceleration. But, it accommodates me, allows a minute amount of slip and fun while compensating for my poor choices. I drop the throttle and absolutely dance past ostensibly more capable vehicles, in a Canadian snow warning, in a 20 year old German sedan. TL;DR - e46 is beauty daily. Even if you need to put in some work. It'll do you right :)

Or should I just get rid of it? It's not worth much really, but I like its a manual 5 speed, fun to drive? I've thought about "blowing it " with a turbo--is that a good idea?

The OEM (chrome) ones are excellent quality and mine and perfect. 2:56 the handles lift up, not out, you were pulling the handle incorrectly. 3:38 GTR, GTS is E92. 5:01 steering wheels changed in 01 to an updated pair (sport and non sport) you have an early ugly wheel, wheels are the same between all models. 5:05 this car does not have the sport package. 6:25 are you sure? It doesn't look like it.

It has the sport package, the owner was adamant. The door handle was actually broken because I had zero issue with the other side or the 193827372 other cars that I have used with similar door handles.

If you want one then learn to work on them. The little sway that it has can fixed with some upgrades but frankly if you just want to enjoy the back roads with a smile on your face and are ok with making some time to maintain it, this car is it. Prices will go up as more catch in but it’s still unappreciated. Plenty on KZread for taking care of it but just make sure you buy one with a good engine and transmission, the rest is cost effective to fix, just a bit of elbow grease. It’s fast enough and more you watch these car guys you realize the M series is great for track and all that but the sweet spot is where you don’t need that excessive power but enough power with a connection to the car. Miata has that from what I hear as does this car.

Watch the full video as I talk about that throughout, ive forgotten a lot of the little stuff since I shot and researched this one. My consensus is that if you have a big enough budget to encompass some unexpected, slightly pricey repairs, these can be really rewarding, more so if you know how to work on them.

While I'm sure some are better, I did an unholy amount of research on these to find out the common problems. This is a pretty average interior for a 3 series that has been used for 20 years. If someone has an immaculate one m3 from this generation, I would love to show what the interior could be! But this is pretty in line with what you will find when looking at used ones with 100k + miles

This video is 4 years old and I have now a 2000 323i sedan that is nearly mint inside and out non of those failing plastic pieces and no breaking and with 153k on it. The car in this video was not very well taken care of at all.

I didn't do a zero to sixty test for this one so I just grabbed what other outlets said. They usually use rollout so the true time was probably high 6s. Account for age and it's definitely in the 7s. So yes, it is unlikely that your typical 328i could run 6.5 seconds stock after 20 years. But since I didn't do a test for this review, I did not want to just assume a number so I put what others said it could do.

Yeah but if you want a really nice car like a 2012 car the parts are far more expensive, and a 1999 Honda doesn’t look as good as this so you decide 😹 And I’ve also had very old GM cars those are worth it but things go wrong on them often without the best parts
