200 years, WWI & WWII, Communism: The Story of Berlin's Natural History Museum

The Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin exists as a witness to history. For 200+ years its scientists have pursued research in the face of WWI and bombings in WWII, political turmoil, and an ever-changing planet. We were invited to share the Museum's past, as they look toward the future.

Fantastic video! It's kind of funny. I'm German and I've been to at least three Natural History museums around the world and I've been to the London one close to 10 times, but I've never been to the one in Berlin. It's a shame and I'll have to change that. As a German, I'm also very impressed with the museum director's English. He expressed himself very well, I thought. The door was a nice touch!

One of our goals in partnering with other museums is to encourage people to find the natural history centers near them! These museums are so varied, no two are exactly alike, and we're all working toward shared goals to learn more about our world-- and we can't do that without people who understand and appreciate what we do. I do hope you check out the museum in Berlin some day! I promise you won't be disappointed.

thebrainscoop Thank you! You thoroughly succeeded in encouraging me to check it out. It's strange that I didn't think of going there on my own. One of the last books I read was "the invention of nature" about Humboldt's live and discoveries. I find it strange that museums and old buildings in other countries have a so much bigger draw for me when they're in other countries. Thanks for making me appreciate what I can see and learn right here at home.

One thing that might be interesting to mention: It's quite literally only /just/ in the former eastern zone. The Berlin wall ran through the Invalidenfriedhof, which is two streets away. I wish you had included the name of the architects that designed the renovation of the east wing. So often the architects are not mentioned when talking about modern buildings and renovations, which I find very strange. The designs didn't just appear out of thin air, someone put a lot of time and effort into them and besides hold the copyrights for them. So why not tell who that was? In all other forms of art and design they are always mentioned. As I was left disappointed in this, I looked it up. It was made by a firm called Diener & Diener Architekten, they won the competition in 2005 for the best design.
