Great video. I just bought a mouthpiece being hand finished…waiting for it to arrive. But man, that little D’Adarrio sounds amazing. I love Theo pieces, but I may have to try that Jazz Select, just for kicks and giggles. It was my favorite in tone/sound in the video, but what the player feels is sooooo important. And everyone is different. Thanks for the video!

I don't want to be too much of a simp for the Theo Wanne team, but the price for a Theo Wanne piece isn't just for the research. They use state-of-the-art CNC machines that, I believe, are more advanced than those used by other manufacturers. This allows them to do very subtle things to the design that would be impossible to do by hand or with lesser machining. My favorite example is the wave baffle on their new Brahma and Shiva IV.

I have tested 8 different mouthpieces for my tenorsax. I decieded myself for a Otto Link Toneedge, without watching the price before. Some Selmer mouthpieces sounded so hard and bright and i felt in love with the dark and warmer Otto Link sound. (Hard rubber!☝) 120.-€. Any questions.......?🤷‍♂️

I have a Shiva 2, a Jody Jazz Jet, both of which I bought new, and a Runyon I inherited 25 years ago. ...I keep going back to the Runyon. It just works. Money doesn't equate to perfect fit for YOUR sound.

Nice discussion! On my alto, I have been playing a vintage NY Meyer 5M for years, and recently got a SYOS Steady mpc and it plays very similarly to my Meyer. For my tenor, I have played on a metal Otto Link for years and about 5 years ago switched to the SYOS ChadLB model, and found it to be a flexible mpc. I think SYOS is definitely a legit consideration, high quality at a reasonable price.

Like you, I also play on a Meyer 5. Before that one, I would play on the stock mouthpieces that came with my horns. I always wondered why I wasn’t getting that specific professional sound I was looking for and that I was hearing from people who played on my horns. Then I stopped at a music store that specialized in saxophone s and addressed my concerns. He just pulled out a mouthpiece and told me to try it. That mouthpiece and sound really blew me away thousands of miles. I ended up buying that which is what I still currently play on. He also told me to research those players whose sounds I love and research and try those mouthpieces. That advice sure did many wonders for my playing.

Expensive ≠ Professional. This is why SYOS is mixing up the marketplace. I don't play one but the number of local pros moving to their less expensive full custom mouthpieces is making me want to try one. Affordable high quality boutique mouthpieces do exist. AM mouthpieces, Retro Revival, 10mFan, SYOS, Francois louis come to mind.

Interesting video and a seemingly fair and honest summary. I could not hear any difference between the mouthpieces but that might mean my ears are not finely enough tuned, or the recording equipment was not able to pick up the subtle differences. I would say that noodling does not give much opportunity to judge the sounds and perhaps playing a short piece of a jazz standard would be a better way of comparing. That goes for saxophone reviews too. But a good video nevertheless.👍

As a touring musician of 20+ years, I have settled on the daddario select jazz mouthpieces on my alto & tenor. I know that if I ever need to replace one on the road, I can pretty much get one in most cities across the globe.

Also, you need to spend time with a piece until you find all that it has to offer. Just because it seems to play "easier" during a play test does not mean it's the one. Not until I kept recording my practice did I find what I like. I do have a Select Jazz as a back up and spend time on it a lot. They are great for the $!

For me the Robusto by far, great richness and cut. The daddario is an okay cheaper option, but in a different class. Saying that Theo pieces are free blowing has put me off and probably the reason it didn't match the robusto. A bit of resistance gives the sound more character in my opinion.

I play on my old Yanagisawa hard rubber mouthpieces that I used in high school. I have a 7 and 8 that I switch back and forth depending on how hard/soft the reed is. I’ve played classical, jazz, rock, funk, and worship music all on the same mouthpiece. I think these mouthpieces were around $100 when I bought them in the late 90’s.

Look around the musical instrument stores in your area. Try as many mouthpieces as you can - which MUST BE on your own instrument. Do you prefer a metal or ebonite mouthpiece! Now comes the most important aspect - the reed. Hard, medium or soft? If you play enough, you’ll soon find your favored reed maker and whether hard/soft etc. Good luck.

The only tenor mouthpiece I’ve ever owned is a Dukoff from the late 90s. It’s so much better than the alto version which is a piece of junk. Im lusting for a Theo Wanne though.

Go SYOS Custom. You can not go wrong. If they are unable to make you a mouthpiece that you are happy with, you return the mouthpieces and get your money back . I have some great vintage copies like Drake and Retro Revival but when it is time to really play for real money, I play my Custom SYOS. And if you are conservative, you can get it in Black! Theo Wanne has ideas but the two that I tried were flawed and if they had been hand finished those flaws would not have been there. All of these " Free Blowing" mouthpieces that I have played are incapable of playing a melody such as "Prelude to a Kiss", pianissimo in the upper (palm keys) register. Unless you play a harder reed which then makes the lower register too resistant and dead. I would like it if one of you would try to do that instead of aimlessly noodling around. Because when you are in the studio and playing what is on the paper, it has to be in tune, on time and pianissimo if called for. And the clock is on. Time is money in the studios. I have been doing this for 60 years for a living. But I am in complete agreement with you on if one is a hobby player then have fun with it and try everything. Music is the best fun you can have with your clothes on! I enjoy your videos very much!
