Today's episode (number 200, can you believe it?) is part of a mini-series of interviews done in the context of the topics of my new book, That Little Voice in Your Head, available now: mogawdat.com/littlevoice
Shahroo Izadi is an award-winning Behavioral Change Specialist. She proposes evidence-based strategies for habit-change and personal development inspired by her experience of working across the UK addiction treatment sector. Shahroo is the bestselling author of The Kindness Method and The Last Diet.
Listen as we discuss:
How Shahroo lost 60kg and was actually able to keep it off.
Why we mistreat ourselves, and how to start being kind instead.
The value of a Personal Development CV.
Closing the gap between how you treat those you love and yourself.
The origin of addictions and why they persist.
It's okay to respect what you actually want and do it your way (forget tough love)

Thank you!!! Very kind conversation! A few years ago I decided to let go of new year’s resolutions because they are just a crazy cultural imposition that does not work. Instead I decided to create rules for my life from the perspective of what nurtures me. My #1 rule is “honor my preferences”, whatever they are at the moment. I no longer do things I do not want. I say no. I ask myself first.. it is wonderful to nurture and care for oneself. I refer to my rules often and tweak them as needed. Thank you both for being so kind.

be curious about your self talk and try and track it down. I tell myself "If being hard on myself worked, I would have achieved the goal by now" makes me reframe and be kind to myself.

We should not be assessed at all. When we are assessed, we become externally motivated as opposed to being internally motivated.

Im with Mo...some time ago a friend ask me and others to write about what it is to be a mother. I came to realize that all the strugles and achievements i fight for in my life and i thought would be in the future of my Daughters werent really what i wish for them. And the way they choose to live their life bring them hapiness which is my absolut goal for them

What I can't get my head around yet is this: I love food, and many times I eat just because I love the taste of this or that. I know that the calories sum up and lead to weight gain. But the long term effect or goal of losing weight if i stop the habit of eating just for fun, doesn't appeal to me as much as the taste of the food I could be eating right now 🤔 I don't know yet which mindset could help me with this problem. Because at the moment I feel like I deprive myself of something good if I don't eat when I want to...

Nice conversation, very deep. As for your mention Ukrainian people being negative rebellious : we, who are outside of this war - can not judge. I left Ukraine because of war, and I can see the situation as a whole and from far and not want all russians to die. But we can not judge people, who 1,5 half year now living in constant fear, anxiety and absolute unknown of the future, living in terror of randomly fallen rockets on civil society. Where everyone is somehow suffered from this aggression: losing home, losing someone close, or witnessing the all awful things happening. I’m myself have 5 people in army, and I can not not to fear; my nephew returned with 3 concussions being a witness of all his folks dead (more than 100 people). My friend was pregnant in cellars and now suffering with small child, because they can not leave. Year had passed before, I had starting to see war distantly and philosophical. So We, who wake up under the clear sky with the threat only of our destiny could not talk or judge people in Ukraine, unless the clear sky without threat will be there too. And I even don’t know how much time will be needed to recover..

I am so sorry to hear of your situation, and am horrified at what is happening to Ukraine. I will not make it through the full conversation, so have no idea what they have said, but it seems out of line. Take care, stay strong. Many people around the world do care. Unfortuanetely here is some terrible pro russian propaganda being presented often. I cannot imagine how I could cope with the daily anxiety, let alone the damage to environment and Population. Blessings to You and Your People and beautiful Country. ✌❤

Hi, I was just listening to your views on assessment in schools. There are many approaches to assessment, some include the notions that you both talk about. Maybe you could look at assessment for learning and compare it to assessment for reporting. A narrative approach to assessment is very prevalent in some sectors of education and some countries. Love your work team. Really enjoy listening. Thanks so much ❤

Why do you have to talk so much?? OMG yes! I have reveled in being an introvert all my life... But I have an unusually strong sense of self--something very frowned upon in Hispanic culture--but my life's mission has been to go within and discover myself and BE the introvert I am. Extroverts are shocked that there's a different way...😂🤣😂🤣

hmm. I finished her podcast on Diary of a CEO and came straight here and finished this too. I skimmed through comments on both channels and yours is the only unkind one I've come across so far and the immediate thought that came to mind was - to word it as kindly as possible: well this person hasn't taken away much of what was being said/taught, and that they must be going through something in their lives OR they've never really learnt the value of kindness which is what this is all about. Comments like yours don't benefit anyone, not even yourself or the ppl you mention. It doesn't make one curious to explore this Susan Orbach but rather does the opposite so you're not serving them either.

Sorry as a therapist and "dealing" daily with human beings who are suffering from low self-esteem and I am working with holistic approches, self-compassion, behavioural methods, inner child, traumatherapy usw. you cant change your behaviour by thinking kindness or refraiming believes or just "removing" old patterns. This is wrong and beyond that much more complex. Just to pick up the train of "kindness" and say its a method is WRONG: its not a method. Sorry! its a practice and its something which is hidden beyond so much other layers of selfhatered usw. Even your brain is trained in this specific area of allertness, when someone really went through shamefull and abusive childhood experience. all her "methods" are based on former Kristine Neff, Christopher Germer, Tara Brach, Jack Kornfield usw who are living proofe for this living kindness.

Perhaps some of us need this kindness as therapy hasn't worked because we don't think we are worth helping, maybe when we think we can be helped or deserve to be helped because we have been kind and compassionate with ourselves then we can begin the healing process. As as therapist I would have thought you yourself would have had more compassion and understood that there are many, many steps to healing
