20 Years Later, McDonald’s Releases a Game Boy Game
Ойындар
So you may already know that Burger King published a few games for the Xbox back in 2006. While there are McDonald’s licensed games on various consoles, the franchise never actually published any of them. But last week, McDonald’s released a Game Boy title based on Grimace, or at least it looks like a Game Boy game. Does this run on actual hardware?

"they didnt have to go thru the trouble, but they did and im lovin' it!" PERFECT final words on the game!
love it when they go the extra mile and make it a rom that works on the real thing, great video as always!

I am not sure which is more surprising... Mcdonalds releases a GameBoy color game or Mcdonalds Works with someone that has a spike driven through an eyeball!
Your smile is absolutely iconic POJR. It really communicates the joy these bits of digital ephemera and trivia bring you

A creative attempt to bring back the demographic of those who grew up with the GBC. It's always good to have a new GameBoy game but I'd skip the 1500 cal meal, of which is 3/4 of an entire days allotment, unless you want to look like the protagonist of the game.

There's something heartwarming about Pojr's little smile in all of these videos.
I wish they actually sold it on gameboy carts in Happy Meal.

Yeah it would be interesting if they sold games in general, similar to what Burger King did in 2006
11min video with 4mins actually being about the game. Love to see it.
The fact this is a rom that runs on hardware takes this from a pretty souless PR stunt to something pretty special. 💗
6:56 I think maybe they had planned to celebrate his 50th Anniversary earlier, but they had to delay it a couple of years because of the epidemic, so now it’s 52. 😉
Ronald looks like he's cranking out an A-bomb on that Ronald World cover art.
'Donald no Magical World' is another good one. It's a Japan exclusive for Gamegear (I read though that the English translated rom is also on the cartridge and loads when used in a non-Japanese Gamegear) It's good a good difficulty curve and some gameplay variety. Check it out if you can.

Nice. Wouldn't mind trying that
Actually these days they wouldn't make a flash game, as flash isn't even supported anymore in browsers. Anything like that on the modern web would be a mix of HTML5 and Javascript. They could also be made with WebAssembly. And then there are Javascript-based emulators, so I'm guessing McDonald's used one of these. Pretty cool to see this, honestly. I was thinking they could have used Gdevelop if it wasn't an actual Gameboy game.

8:16: funny how bottom left has parallax scrolling in the clouds, but bottom right does not. Either this is an oversight, or there's a technical reason for this.
@pojr
Жыл бұрын
The bottom right has foreground objects in the top row that grimace can interact with (which means parallax scrolling cannot happen). The bottom left doesn't have any blocks or tiles in that row, so parallax rolling is able to happen. That just shows more proof that it's a real Game boy game!
They should make a physical release of it. I’d buy it

Can You Make "5 Cancelled Nes Games That You Can Play On Prototype Rom"??
I seems like they're trying to appear to the 90s kids who grew up with gameboy. But they phased out Grimace in the 80s and none us remember him.

Yeah a lot of the McDonald's characters faded into obscurity.
@ccricers

That makes me think it's more for 80s kids because I played M.C. Kids when I was little and recognized Grimace, Birdie and the others.
now macdonalds just has to offer the game in thear restaurants ( like the cameras back in the 90s )
4:50 It never was until late into development. Some of the beta versions where stripped of any Mcdonalds branding.
There was also Macdonald Land on the NES which I think had Ronald as a playable character.
"... apples get stuck in the status bar, that's just bad programming ..." Came for the Grimace, but was so pleasantly surprised to see other games featured. Top notch!

Thank you! I covered the other games because I realized the grimace game alone wouldn't have been enough for a full video.
4:13 The Megadrive version of the game atleast have the Mcdonalds logo on the cover-art
Great video! You didn't mention Donald Magical World for the Game Gear also by Treasure. It's kinda a prequel to Treasure Land Adventure

There is also McDonaldLand for the NES and a training cart for the NDS.
I just practically joined your Discord server and shared my opinion that I don't believe this game by McDonald's should be considered a "retro" game just because it works on a retro gaming system 🤔🤔 I'm seeing it like when the radio stations started calling more than the 1950's as oldies and adding 1960's and 1970's as "oldies"… I believe it's getting really convoluted!!

That's a fair point. It runs on old hardware but it's not an old game.
FYI, this game is up to v1.3 already.
Your music sounds like the music on that show "How its Made"
You keep saying it runs on real hardware. I wanted to see that.
@pojr
Жыл бұрын
It runs on the MiSTer FPGA which is hardware emulation. This means there's a 99% chance it will work on real hardware.
Oh my gosh that old video, haha I'm guessing you had the MC kids Nintendo game didn't you Pojr. 😉 Just a gut feeling.
On the next video you can bring up the conversation on smoking we had on discord the other day.
You missed Ronald McDonald in magical world for the sega game gear where you also play as Ronald.
Most of those types of games are things that already exist and simply get a license slapped onto them. Think along the lines of SMB 2 in the US.
I want to buy an official physical copy
*sees myself in the discord in the video* Yay! Guys, we need people to start making CRTs again

you should do a video or two covering gb studio games. most of the games made for it are downright terrible but theres a few really good ones here and there. my ones that pass my seal of quality are cherry rescue (early gb studio gem) jelly bun demo wink (very good but suffers from what i like to call "gameboy studio jank") nyghtmare repugnant bounty (that one's mine) :)
Nowhere in the video you answer the question if it runs on real hardware or not :(
@pojr
Жыл бұрын
Short answer is yes it does. I tested it out on the Mister FPGA which is hardware emulation. So if it works on the Mister, there's a 99% chance it will work on real hardware.
