    I remember over a decade ago my late friend, Thomas designing the masters for the 1701-A. It was so frustrating for him to design the mounting points for the pylons to the secondary hull, but I think he did a masterful job. I have a pile of kits of this ship, waiting to be built as the original and refit and plenty of aftermarket add-ons to go with it. Truly a gorgeous design. Thomas passed away about seven years ago, and his contributions to modeling have made the hobby so much more enjoyable. He also did retooling on the Revell Voyager, masters construction on the NX-01, and designed decals for many kits-including providing a number of decals to Paramount to turn the Excelsior into a variety of other starships.

    Totally agree about the Ent-D. I've seen people do amazing things with that old kit, but it still really deserves to be updated and done in a larger scale, and I'm holding out hope that R2 will eventually release that 1/1000 version they've hinted at.

    I haven't built the majority of the models on your list...But I agree with the ranking of the ones I have. My top three..the Galileo shuttle...great kit and wonderfully made...the K'tinga, which I spent a good two months on, bought the masking kit, all the paints I custom mixed to proper shades, and it turned out just beautiful. And I agree with the #1. I built this one also stock, with the aztec decals and lighting. Turned out just fantastic. But...I'm surprised you did not at least give an honorable mention to the original AMT TOS Enterprise kit. I have a couple of those, and have built several over the decades including the first production run of it in the 60's.

    A very interesting watch. Thank you. I think though that you have missed a trick - my favourite Star Trek kit is the AMT 1/350 Klingon Bird of Prey. The kit is fairly basic, and not without it's faults BUT she's a great ship design, in a great scale and the funnest paint and weathering job you'll have with your trousers on.

    Interesting review of models. I do wonder why you weren't mentioning who the manufacturers were. Perhaps you could update the description with a list of the 20, including scale, manufacturer, etc. One kit you didn't mention, which I think should absolutely be listed here is from DeBoer Hulls. They have an Enterprise A which is, I believe, 1:250 scale (46" long) and is an absolute marvel of engineering. It's very pricey, and the builder will have to be resourceful to finish it off as it should be, but what they provide is as good as it gets.

Dollars already comes with all the decals including the Aztec decals with in the kit it self. Unlike all the other kits were you have to purchase the Aztec decals separately at almost the same price as the kit itself depending on the scale...

    You have done some great model builds, for sure! I enjoyed the video! I would like to get back into model building again - it has been MANY years! I think it would be greatly helpful to new or novice Trek builders if you would reference the maker of each of the model kits you reviewed. I saw some AMT boxes in there, and you mention Round 2, and the Aztec decal sets, but no mention of Polar Lights or any of the other ST model makers. With most of your picks, I have no idea who produced them! When I was a pup, I built an AMT original Enterprise, or maybe it was a Revelle, I'm not certain! Not too long ago, I acquired a prebuilt Diamond Select TOS Enterprise, which is a nice display piece, but I'm itching to build. In my youth, I was very proficient with autos and WWII aircraft and equipment. I think it would be a great service if you could write a note and pin it, outlining by your number scheme, each model's manufacturer, and maybe any pertinent info you deemed worthwhile to go with it. Thanks! LLAP!

    Well done review, thank you. I've just got back into model construction again after way too many years. My first model this past Spring was the one you rated as #1. I did get the accessories kit. I'm surprised that you didn't include the 7 Enterprise set. Either the kit is not worthy of the review, or you had to cut it off somewhere, and 20 was the limit? I use AllScaleTrek as a guide when I go through my projects. Looking forward to the re-designed Enterprise-D model.

    I've grown quite fond of the SNW Enterprise design but I am quite fond of the 1:350 scale kits. I would love to see the SNW design in that scale to go alongside the TOS and Refit/A versions just because I love going into that near "studio scale" project (I know true studio scale would be closer to 6 feet than the 2 and a half of the 1:350 kits)

  • @f4lloutgaymer
    @f4lloutgaymer Жыл бұрын

    Fascinating. 🖖 I wondered how you were going to rank these. And I agree with pretty much what you said. I, personally, am glad that the 1/530 Refit kit is available. It is not a great kit. It's, marginally, a good kit. But, it is a good median kit for those who do not have the room, or even skill, to build the 1/350 Refit kit. The 1/530 is large enough to light, and include interior details. It can fit on a shelf easier than the 1/350. And it doesn't cost $200 to get the basic model. Since Round 2 re-released the 1/530 we don't have to spend $200-500 for a mediocre kit in a large enough scale. As eBay was wrought to charge. 🙄 Yes, it *does* require a lot of work if you want to make it the perfect representation of the Enterprise. But even an average builder can still make that one look good. Perfect? perhaps not. Pretty? Sure. I want to get a couple of those kits in order to build one using the (crazy) etched panel lines to use with part of a Aztec decal job to show how nice they could be utilized together. Or how horribly they might look. I don't know. But, of course, I would be using aerosol filler primer on it first to get the etched panel lines a bit shallower, but not fully filled in/removed. I'm not worried about the inaccurate bridge and planetary sensor parts, as this build wouldn't be "The Enterprise". Just a Starfleet ship. Another build I want to do with the 1/530 is fill in the windows, and redrill (if I light it), or get 1/1000 refit window decals, and build the ship as the refit Enterprise from the Pike/Into Darkness/Discovery universe ship size craziness. I like the design of Pike's Enterprise. But I hate the size it is meant to represent. When you put the 1/2500, or 1/1000 Pike Enterpise next to Kirk's *updated* and improved ship, and Pike's is 2.5+ times larger?! That is freaking nuts. So a humor build I want to do is build the 1/530 Refit with minimal modifying, and call it the Refit Enterprise from Pike's universe. Again, I like the designs. I don't agree with the sizes they made of the ships. 😏 Great episode. Yeah, do aStar Wars one next. 👍

    I also agree with the D. I'm currently working on one and I admit, it's a pain to put in accurate parts, and grind trenches to run wire to the warp engines. If Round 2 could invest money for all the accessories when they released the popular 1:350 TOS Enterprise, they can update the D with the technology they have now. Part of me now wants to wait until they do.

    i have no idea why Round 2 would re-issue the worst model kit of the Enterprise A ever produced, especially when you've released 2 of the best in recent years (the 1/350 version being absolutely amazing)...the 1/537 is a nightmare kit in many respects...

  • @f4lloutgaymer

    @f4lloutgaymer

    Жыл бұрын

    As awful as that 1/530 kit is (and it's pretty bad), I'm glad they re-released it. It does require a lot of work if you are going to make it screen accurate. It is definitely an Advanced+ Skill model. However, it does, still build into a fair representation of a Federation ship. It does require extra work to keep the pylons from breaking the strongback (ironyyyy. 😄). But, most importantly, it is a large enough ship to light and add interior details to, and able to display on a shelf, without breaking the bank. You can, finally, get the 1/530 for $50 instead of the eBay prices ranging from $200-1000 because it was out of production. I have the 1/350 Refit, and 1/350 TOS kits. But I have no place to display them. I hope to have space someday, as I *really* want to build and light them. But the 1/530 scale refit and TOS kit (the cutaway) can be lit, with interiors, and displayed on a shelf. I like that. So, again, the Refit is an awful kit, but a number of people make aftermarket parts to perfect it; if you build it as Enterprise. But, you can build it OOB as a Constitution/Enterprise-class variant, with some extra work. Not ideal. But I'm glad it's available and affordable. Cheers and Excellence to you. 🤘🎸😎🖖

    I just completed my first Trek model, the 1/2500 Enterprise D and I have the 1/1000 Defiant lined up for the next project (so happy I won't have to do full body decaling this time!). Nice to see it here as one of the better kits, though I probably won't be lighting mine as this is something generally beyond my expertise in terms of modelmaking. I was considering the Revell Kelvin timeline Enterprise, because I actually love that ship (except the nacelles it is really one of the best versions of the Constitution class) but ultimately decided against it due to its size, it is just too large for me to justify. As an aside, I agree that the Enterprise D badly needs a new tool model up to current standards in anything between 1/1400 and 1/2500 scale. Hopefully, due to success of Picard season 3, this actually happens. As for my 1/2500 Enterprise D I'm reasoably proud of it, it is out of the box build and after 2 year long break from modelmaking. It also is the perfect size for me, as I prefer smaller kits. If you want to take a look, it is on my imgur page imgur.com/t/star_trek/qrZ7YEa

Its really small and you can just remove a panel line and run it in its place and it come pre covered is really thin and can hold enough voltage for all the lighting in the nacelles. I am in total agreement on the need for a larger version of the USS Discovery. Round 2 originally had plans for a 1:1000 and 1:1400 (I think), but they haven't followed through with it (likely due to poor sales of these kits). Regardless, I keep bugging them and sending the occasional email through on their website asking for it... Being a pest, I know, but it would be so cool to have a bigger one (It's a really cool ship!). Also, no mention of the USS Franklin (Moebius Models) - that is a very well engineered kit. Made for lighting!

    "We've re-tooled models"? No, they re-tooled models. And some of those choices may very well be based on mass-manufacturability issues related to things such as injection molding concerns, loss of detail as the die wear out, etc. Unless you are willing to buy at Hasegawa-like prices?

    You didn't even give the grand daddy of the them all the original TOS 18" Enterprise even a mention!. HOW! Without that FIRST model kit there would be no others. I know it's a problem child and I've built several, but it still should be on this list. In the right hands that kit can be wonderful.

    As mentioned many are products of their time ( let's not forget the ancient creed " it looks crappy, inaccurate goes together like it's from 3 different kits from different companies so stick a Star Trek label on it " those guys will buy anything 🤑🤑🤑 which is why I gave up getting the Trek kits from AMT/ERTL*American modelling trash/every release totally lame *✋ HOLD THE PHONE here let me explain my comment those companies make excellent cars, and SW kits among others it was the TREK kits ( certain SW kits as well) that really let me down way back when ( and I tried many times I'll tell you) and made me give up on the series NOW I'm more forgiving and considering getting some of the newest tooled releases like the shuttle, discovery series kits and the redesigned classic bridge ( back in the day 😱🤬🤬🤬🤬) but now it actually looks good and if I see one I'll pick it up as more modern tooling actually looks like the company has put serious effort in the kits 🤔 mmm ( the only kit I actually have from back when I liked was the DS9 I built a few and still have the fibre optic version yet to build and I'll swop the bulbs for LEDs when I get better at soldering circuits) as for a new galaxy class I agree that needs the update version ( saucer separation,triple nacelle option later ships registration options)

    The more I see the 1000 scale Excelsior the more I'm sure it's under scale! The size of the bridge compared to ships of supposedly the same scale just doesn't make sense especially in its original iteration. Also the Kelvin Enterprise may be a good kit but god it's ugly! (Sorry, but I hate the Abrams designs with a passion!)

    Sure if you make a six figure paycheck. Star Trek model's have gotten too Damned expensive! So the average person living paycheck to paycheck can not really afford them anymore. and to redo or improve the older kits your talking an even higher price tag than they have now. No one but those who make a huge paycheck is going to go running out and lay down 60-70 dollars for a 1/1400 scale 1701-D model kit plain and simple. when you live paycheck to paycheck you don't have that luxury especially with the basic costs of rent, food, electric, etc. constantly going up Only those with mean's are going to be buying any of these kits Number one. Number two just like you dogging on the old 1/537 scale refit. Many people can't afford the 1/350 scale model and they don't want the 1/1000 kit as they can not super detail it like they want. And The old 1/537 scale kit not only brings back memories of when they built that kit as a kid. but with some work and a little Elbow grease they can correct that kit into a decent model. and those who do NOT have the rook to display the huge 1/350 scale version they can have the a decent size model that they can detail with the officers lounge, botanical garden and shuttle bay and light up. So I totally disagree that it should be scrapped. the model can be lit and made into not only a nice model kit with lights, but also lend it's self to being kit bashed into other starship's that won't cost an arm and a leg like the 1/350 scale model. You keep leaving out that to many modeler's the older kits with all their flaws are nostalgic to allot of modeler's who have found memories of building them and want them back for that reason. Just because Something is old doesn't mean you gotta throw it away. and what better way to hone a modeler's skill than by correcting the flaws in these old kits. That's what being a modeler is, trying to recreate a replica of the actual thing rather it be a real or science fiction thing your modeling. Having all the work done for you does not constitute you as a 100% modeler as all your doing is inserting tab A into Slot B adding paint and decals with everything having been premade for you. Modeling is correcting or adding what should be there but isn't, how it should look but doesn't That's what Modeling is, That's what makes you a model Builder Not just an assembler..... Stepping off my soap box now.
