20 Great Arcade Games with Terrible Console Ports
Ойындар
True Fact: Whether it's due to hardware limitations or the publishers just not caring, some ports are better experienced on their original hardware
Porting a game should be simple, in theory. You’ve got the actual game already made, and all you need to do is convert to different hardware. Well, there are actually a ton of factors that developers need to face when transferring titles to new homes. Namely programming architecture, a means of delivery, button mapping, and that’s before you consider all the added features that often get included when releases shift camps. Yet sometimes developers drop the ball so hard that they become legendary, and that’s what we’re here to look at today
In this video I explore in depth the history of arcades, looking for the best arcade games that have had the worst domestic conversions
In this video you will find:
• A side-by-side comparison of the worst console ports ever performed
• Specific clips of the same arcade scenes and their corresponding console version (in order to compare graphics, sound and gameplay)
• Information related to each game such as release date, developer company, game genre and system it was released on.
• Official game box arts with a 3D presentation.
• Educative and/or critical comments on the importance of the video game and why you should play it

⚠️ All gameplay recording, game curation and opinions included in this video, as well as editing is completely done by me
Bits & Beats creates videos about the history of video games. In this channel you'll find comparisons, retrospectives, technical analysis, but, mostly, game curations with the idea of having an important task of preserving video games, and make them relevant to society at large.
Curation isn't just about digging up neat games, but it's also about preservation, interpretation, and using one's knowledge to make it relevant to people. With my videos I want older gamers to look back and remember the influence of video games on their lives, and new gamers to understand the larger context of the series they're playing for the first time today.
I put significant time and creative effort into each one of my videos, including research, digging into archives, playing video games and recording hours of footage, selecting specific clips, writing reviews for each title, and making a very careful video editing in the way to transmit both educational and entertaining values to my audience. Every video takes a lot of hours to produce, because I strive to give my audience a consistent, high-quality content.
Fidelity and preservation of the video games is essential in Bits & Beats, so the recordings are made with the highest bitrate quality. It is done this way to preserve original game look and sound through modern footage, with no superfluous additions. I recommend you watch the video at 4K and 60 frames per second to get the best possible viewing experience.
I hope you enjoy my videos and find them useful!

I dunno if it's fair to call Final Fight SNES a "terrible" console port. It was Capcom's first game for the system, and the SNES port was nearly a launch title in Japan (one month after the console's release) and North America (a bit over two months after its release there). It was definitely limited by the small amount of cartridge space most games had at the time (it was only a 1 MB game!), which required cutting out a playable character and one of the five levels. But you know what? Those things aside, and a few other minor issues (famous NOA censorship, some slowdown in later levels where lots of enemies/sprites are onscreen), the gameplay is actually very solid and pretty faithful to the arcade. I'd love it if some ROM hacker took it upon themselves to expand the ROM, reinsert the cut content, and maybe even got the two player mode working - TCRF documented there's still all sorts of structures set up in RAM for two players. It's not so much a TERRIBLE port as it is an INCOMPLETE one, I'd say. Capcom's maiden effort on the hardware, plus a pretty tight, near-launch window - and evidence that they clearly intended more but ran out of time. I think they can be given a pass on that basis.

Double Dragon for the NES is really good. Not at Contra level, with a NES port better than the arcade, but a very fun game. DD2 is an amazing sequel.
Well, I have some different opinions. Dragon's Lair, while still a bad game, it is not a port but an entirely different game. Also, Double Dragon for NES is quite good actually, offers new things for the ones it takes out. I would not call it terrible. The Virtua fighter port is more unnecesary than bad really. As for Street Fighter II on GB, it is lacking, but the Mortal Kombat port is way, way worse. I agree on the rest.

Oh man, I think the NES port of Double Dragon is the best of all the ports. It's true it lacks coop, but it's definitely the most playable in my opinion. It's interesting how views can vary so wildly. Thanks for the video!
As with DOUBLE DRAGON, FINAL FIGHT on the SNES shouldn't be on here either. It's still a great game.
I think Double Dragon on the NES was actually a bit better than the horribly controlling arcade original. I used to play both quite a bit. Cruis'n USA for the N64 was a good port, as was Sunset Riders on the Genesis/MD. Also, at 5:45 That's not Ikari Warriors II (actually called Victory Road), it's the original, and the NES port was pretty good for being a 1986 NES port with limited rom space. These games should be judged in the time periods they were released. I'm a child of the Atari 2600, so if a game retained any of the feel from an arcade original it made us happy to be able to play them at home.
Nice video! Arcade versions of "Pit-fighter" and "Time Killers" aren't so good. So we can't expect a lot from ports. 😃

Ah yes, the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man, the one forced to be developed in at most a few weeks, and the main catalyst behind the video crash of 1983. (Along with E.T.) What an absolute disaster that was. Funny that you mention it though since now there’s a fan version called Pac-Man 8K that has been praised by said developer himself, along with many other great homebrews, especially the few other Namco ones we have so far. (Notably Mappy, Galagon, and Draconian) It’s hard to fully appreciate just how far we’ve come sometimes, even for newer ports on now much older systems… EDIT: Minor spelling mistake.

@@juststatedtheobvious9633 Ah alright, my bad. I didn’t know those existed until now. From what I can understand though, most of the homebrew games are still using the limitations of the actual Atari 2600’s hardware, so if nothing else that’s still cool. I’m not sure how much more data is being used for each of the games though, but I’d imagine it’s not by much. It’s nice to know you can store many games on one cartridge though from SD cards, that’s definitely a good idea. It saves space and you don’t have to try and hunt down any rare, obscure, and expensive titles. Too bad I don’t have a PC as those themselves are expensive for me by today’s standards for even a decent one that won’t crap out for a month, but hey, it’s the thought that counts. That Star Castle homebrew looks neat too. Another favorite of mine is Space Rocks, which adds more features to the Atari 2600 Asteroids.
@juststatedtheobvious9633

@@ZacharyDietze Apologies, a bit of research indicates Mappy is a Melody game - 8kb of RAM is included as an upgrade over the usual 128 bytes. And you can use alternate forms of bankswitching. But even during the 2600's lifetime, you had Starpath and Superchip. So, while it's not faithful to the original system, it's faithful to what might have been offered if Atari had competed as aggressively as possible after the crash. (It's still nowhere near the 16kb of VRAM + 8kb RAM in the Master System.) The Harmony cart offers similar upgrade options - but there's been more than one revision, so I can't speak for the range of what's available.

Very strange choice to have the nes port which is the port most people associate double dragon with in there. Game has no slowdown unlike the arcade port, has an actual level up system where you learn your moves as you progress the game, the music is excellent and the hit detection is spot on. Besides the fact that it lacks coop it’s honestly the most enjoyable port of the game to play over even the arcade, master system and genesis which were all considered superior by people (For the record I think the gba port is by far the best port of the game)
The PS1 port of Xmen vs SF is actually pretty cool and helped popularize cross over media fighters like Marvel vs Capcom. Plus the game is worth a lot. Also despite Virtua Fighter 2 having to be scaled down to play on the Genesis, the game looks great though it plays poorly fer sure. Would love to have MK3 For the GBA though. Look better than all versions of MK1 and the non arcade ports of MK2. Good vid!
Most ports here (perhaps apart from Golden Axe for the PCE and Pit-Fighter as well as Final Fight for the SNES) fall not so much into the "terrible" category as the "what *did* you expect with this hardware" category. And a few are actually surprisingly playable.
I wouldn't consider the Gameboy SF to be a bad port. For what the system had to work with it made kids pretty happy, including myself!!!

There is a version of Mortal Kombat 3 worse than that of GBA, which is the exclusive Brazilian version, for Sega Master System, made by TEC TOY. A good attempt, but due to the limitations of the console, it was very weak.
The MegaDrive/Genesis Golden Axe was very good, and the Streetfighter on Gameboy was a good attempt for that hardware
The only good for Golden Axe's port released in PC-Engine are the OST and his anime-style FMV sequences.
This is a pretty good list, but you also have to consider that in some cases there were no better alternatives at the time so some of these were actually considered hits at the time. Back when Double Dragon was released on the NES, it was the only option out there and there wasn't anything else like it on the NES at the time. Also, the Ikari 2 clip is actually showing the arcade version of Ikari 1 and the NES version of Ikari 2. There actually was an arcade version of Ikari 2 called "Victory Road" and it played closer to the NES version. The NES version of Ikari 1 was quite popular. Since both arcade versions of these games had a rotary joystick, the NES version had to make some compromises in gameplay but they were still fun since they had 2 player support you could play with friends.
That magic spell in Golden Axe sounded like a dial-up modem. I loved Captain America and the Avengers in the arcades, extremely disappponted with the home ports.

The genesis port of captain America and the avengers played better than the SNES one the genesis version has all the voice samples.
WHAT!!!!???? DOUBLE DRAGON on the good ole NES is a classic! It shouldn't even be on here.
I partially agree with most of these. With consoles being so limited in the 90s, there's not much you can do with a fancy new arcade game that uses more CPU and more RAM. FYI, Rampage on 7800 was very inferior when you consider the NES version alongside it. Also, any 16-bit game that was ported to 8-bit....GOOD LUCK! ;-)
i really love the captain america and the avengers when you take a lot of life of the boss and you hear the "ok go ! " change the music and you feel super powerful
I have Cruis’n USA on the N64 and put a lot of hours into it when I was a kid. It’s fun, I don’t think it’s terrible.
How is the SNES port of MK1 not on the list when it is only seen at the beginning of this video? This is confusing.
What the...that's the best Golden Axe the proud PC Engine could muster? I didn't know about that one 'til just now.
There's a very big difference between lazy ports that deserve to in this list and ports on limited HW that simply can't do the original game any justice like handhelds for example, both can't be the same thing on the same list.
I know this is a worst list but to change the topic just a bit, you can't deny the Gameboy color port of dragon's lair was really damn impressive.

For me, it's a good game. But it is also fair to recognize that the Virtua Fighter franchise is inextricably associated with 3D environments. It is a game that, with another name, would not have generated any debate.
Have to disagree with the Cruisin port on N64 and Xmen vs Street Fighter on PS1. Both were great ports. Even Final Fight on SNES was great considering the hardware difference. Especially Cruisin since the arcade and N64 weren't much different at all when it came to hardware specs.

Just rename the title of this video from "terrible" to "average" and most people will agree.
Of the games on the video - most fall into the "mediocre", "not that bad" or even "good" categories, not "the worst" - a few are adaptations or reimaginings, not straight up ports or convertions - a couple are considered a improvement over the arcade Originals Seriously, there are many, MANY ports and convertions out there that really deserved to be on this vídeo instead of the majority of the ones featured in it.
For Street Fighter II, you basically can't compare arcade port to Game Boy port because Game Boy ports are usually heavily downscaled in order to fit their limitations.
When It came out, I thought the port of SF2 on Gameboy was pretty good, considering the limitations. Then, years later,I played a bootleg port on the NES made by Hummer, and I understand how horrible of a port the Gameboy version is.
*sees Golden Axe* "THEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS, PAL!" (draws blade) *cue the horrible Turbo CD port of the game* "...never mind." (sheathes blade)
Daayam! PIT FIGHTER had some really awkward poses, huh??
Many of these ports are on home systems that were dated for the time. In many cases the developers did a decent job given the tools they had to work with.
The “terrible port” description here is quite a stretch on many of these. They may not have been perfect ports, due to hardware limitations or tight deadlines, but many of these played well and looked fine at the time. More importantly- they were fun.
Not all these ports are bad. For example, Double Dragon is what it is thanks to the beloved NES games, not exactly the arcade version.

Double Dragon for the NES/Famicom felt like an incomplete and limitized game-test prototype that has been rushed into stores with hype put into it. When Technōs Japan ported Double Dragon II next, it felt like the real deal and it's even better than the arcade trilogy.
Primal Rage in Mega Drive is Awesome!!!
I would argue that one game which got poorly ported to console is Virtual-On on Sega Saturn. Not because of any sort of hardware, or technical things that are wrong with the console version, but rather a bad port because of the controller. That game was built around a very specific control scheme that a standard controller simply can't emulate, and when you try to incorporate that control scheme onto a standard console controller, it becomes incredibly awkward. Especially since the dual stick controller they released to go alongside the game was never released outside Japan. Regardless, the fact that they felt it necessary to release such a controller at all just for that game (granted more games did later release to use it) kind of proves my point.
Excellent video
This is the real tragic example of Final Fight, One of the most popular Beat’em ups in the arcade since Double Dragon, ruined by bad snes ports, especially the western region.
Most of these arcade ports are not that bad. They were fine for the hardware they were converted to and they still hold up somehow.
These are terrible ports? You need to double check some of these. You’re waaay off on a few!
Primal Rage is already sort of terrible by itself lol. The SNES and Genesis ports only reflected that. Also Sunset Riders is far from being a port. It's more like a re imagination of the original game. Though I admit that version can be a bit unfair sometimes.
Oh boy…ALL of the PS1 ports of CPS2 fighters (Vs. Games especially) were quite literally trash, but as a kid, I ate up the chance to play those games at home.
I think that I disagree with almost all your terrible console ports choices, but really it's just a personal preference question. BTW, I found your channel a few days ago and I'm really enjoying the content. Keep rocking! =D
As bad as the GB version of street fighter 2 was, it’s miles better than the Speccy and C64 versions. I would say even better than the ST and Amiga versions too. Actually most these conversions aren’t that bad. No one thinks nes double dragon or MD primal rage are bad games/ports.

Yeah, they should include computers if they really want to highlight some bad conversions. US Gold released some right stinkers.
Son : I want Street Fighter.. Mom : We Have Street Fighter at home. 🤣🤣
X-Men vs street fighter could have had a little more description, because its not immediately obvious what's wrong about it.
What were they thinking with that Golden Axe port for PC Engine CD??? Yikes.

"....how are we supposed to all this into 64 kb of general RAM? With this deadline?" "We're not getting paid enough to care. Just cut things until it stops crashing."
I remember renting Virtual Fighter 2 for Genesis summer of 97ish. It didn’t make any sense - a remake of the second installment to THE original 3D fighting game, with choppy 2D sprites AND missing the new characters specific to the title? Whose idea was this?
Aaaah, come on guys! Time Killers never was a great arcade game.
Did!’t know Final Fight Arcade had a push start button option vs insert coin option.
Double Dragon.... that's what happens when every character in the game misses leg day. No matter the platform.
I'm surprised you didn't include the Atari 2600 ports of Double Dragon and Rampage, which were *far* worse than the ones you showed here.
Seems kind of unfair to punch down at the GB version of street fighter II , considering that such a port is quite a feat in itself.
When you consider the technological linitations of the then 7 year old Megadrive hardware, the Genesis port of Primal Rage isn't bad at all
That music on the Master System version of Strider. The game should have come with a paracetamol.
You used the wrong the wrong Ikari Warriors. You showed the Arcade of Ikari Warriors (1) and showed Ikari Warriors 2: Victory Road for the NES. In the arcade Ikari Warriors 2 was known as Victory Road: Ikari Warriors 2. So one of the games is wrong.
I’ve always thought of ports as crap editions of the original arcade.
This was made for Primal Rage. Which sucks because the arcade version is still broken emulation wise in MAME.
Where can i find the OST from the 2nd showed in the video of Golden axe 1990 Telenet ? This music is loud !!!
I loved Cruisn USA and I know it was a bad port but that and Super Mario 64 were great games that I first owned for my N64. Tons of great memories. Cruisn is charmingly bad 😁 P.s. Final fight was great too even though Guy and 2 player was missing 😊

is it Really that bad? I can't tell from the video
4:06 saying the nes port of double dragon sucked. Not even bringing up the Atari port. DROPPED
To compare arcade and 8 bits consoles it's insane
You think the NES version of Double Dragon is bad? That is my FAVORITE NES game ever. You’re nuts.
Wow I never knew Atari was behind that snes port! Really makes you wonder... Quite frankly I consider your placing of X-men Vs Street Fighter ludicrous on several levels as if it is even vaguely in the ballpark of what comes immediately after. Before nes ikari warriors or snes final fight? Absolutely similar situations. Leading just before 2600 Pac-Man and NES Dragon's Lair? Baffling. I respect your work and effort regardless but I'd love to understand your perspective more! Either way thanks for sharing and your video quality is always top-notch. Take care!
You're missing a lot of really bad C64 Amiga ports as well. Ikari Warriors on C64 was unplayable.
Why even count the Game Boy port of Street Fighter II, everything originally made on more powerful hardware suffered when porting to handhelds back then.
