How do you pronounce it though? In Germany, although of course not perfectly, the French pronunciation is widely used, I would not know how to say most of them differently, not without effort 😅

I always assumed Hermes was pronounced "Her-meez" like the ancient Greek god, because it was spelled the same way except for the accent mark on the second E. But then I heard people actually pronounce it. The irony is that I often default to French pronunciation when trying to determine English words that appear to be of French origin. Until I was in my early teens, for example, I thought "financier" was pronounced "fi-nan-see-ay," but then I learned it's actually pronounced in English the same way it's spelled. The same goes for the musical instrument called a "cornet," which I though was pronounced "cor-nay," though I could swear I remember someone telling me when I was in middle school that this was the "correct" pronunciation. I've also sometimes done the opposite, assuming the spelling of a French-sounding word based on the pronunciation. In my defense, I think my tendency to "default to French" has to do with my family and location. I come from a part of the United States that was formerly part of New France, and as such there are many places around me with names of French origin. Moreover, my mother was a French minor in college because she thought she might want a career as a diplomat, so I heard a fair number of French words (and pronunciations) from her. However, I've also gotten burned in other languages. I thought Versace was pronounced "Ver-sass" or "Ver-soss," but again, I was surprised to learn it was an Italian brand and not French.
