Lol that mince meat pie is still made in England every Christmas time. I think it was after the Victorian era that we stopped using actual meat in the pie. They are smaller tiny pies as well, instead of one big pie. Back in the day meat was added to show status and wealth, because poor people could hardly afford meat or bread. King Henry 8th liked the pie so much, he declared everyone in England should try it, and it caught on.

My Mom had a cafe in a small town during the fifties and sixties. My Mom was from south Texas and was an awesome cook. Always having home made rolls and pies. People would bring in fruit for her to make pies and fruit rolls. She had a friend who would bring her sour cream and she would bake sour cream raisin pies . She would have to make at least 4 chocolate meringue pies, 2 lemon pies..one meringue and one with a lattice top….i mean..fresh strawberries and raspberries became delicious fruit rolled in sponge cake …blueberries, gooseberries, rhubarb, apple ..can you imagine…fresh pies with local produce. I’m 79 and so thankful I learn pie making from my Mom.

🤤🤤🤤 Yes, I can imagine that, even though many of those fruits don't grow locally where I grew up. Sour cream raisin pie is to die for! My mom occasionally made pies with a local berry; it was 1 crust, a custard filling, raw saskatoon berries with a glaze, and topped with whipped cream. I suspect you would have loved it as much as I did.

My Grandmother in southern Ontario was of German origin via Pennsylvania. She was a prize winning pie maker and passed on her skill to her daughter in law ,my mom.I am 73 and remember the hours I spent in the kitchen with them as a child and fighting over the last piece of pie with my older brother.Sadly few people who work physically hard enough to healthily eat those kind of desserts anymore But in the day we had them all Graham cracker custard with a meringue top.Rhubarb and rhubarb custard, coconut cream, chocolate, mincemeat, an apple pie with out a top crust. Peach was my favorite. But in reality I loved them all..

Shoofly Pie like said is still available around Pennsylvania. It was originally the centennial cake in 1876, but converted to a pie because the cake was very sticky and a pie crust made it easier to handle. The name Shoofly was popular at the time for Shoofly the Boxing Mule. Many items were named after him, including molasses, and eventually the pie.

Some of these recipes were passed down from family members some were found when I was researching what thanksgiving dishes were common between 1910-1940 for my grandmother. There was a dish her mom or grandmother used to make at thanksgiving but never wrote a recipe down for it. She was talking about it in the early 2000's or very late 1990's. I managed to find something that if it wasn't exactly was close enough it brought her a lot of joy.

@@Lemondrop2124 Nesselrode Pie (pretty labor-intensive, lol) Author: Kate Wheeler Serves:8 Prep time:25 mins Cook time:15 mins Total time:40 mins Ingredients For crumb crust: 1½ c. chocolate cookie crumbs (I used Trader Joe's chocolate cat cookies) 2 T sugar ½ c. butter Ingredients For the filling: ½ cup finely diced candied fruit (I used red and green pineapple for color and texture and candied orange peel) ⅓ cup rum 1½ c. heavy cream, divided into ¾ c. and ¾ c. 3 egg yolks 2 T sugar 1 tablespoon gelatin ⅓ cup cold water ½ c. sweetened chestnut puree 1 teaspoon vanilla 3 egg whites, beaten until stiff Instructions For crumb crust: 1. Process sugar and crumbs in food processor. 2. Melt butter, combine with sugar and crumbs. 3. Press into a 9 inch pie plate until firm (I use the bottom of a glass to press it in. 4, Bake at 325 degrees for about 15 minutes, let cool. Instructions For the filling: 1. Pour rum over the fruits, let macerate for at least one hour. 2. Bring ¾ c. cream to a simmer. Beat egg yolks with sugar until pale yellow. Whisk in part of the hot cream, then return the eggs to the remainder of the cream and whisk over low heat until the mixture is thickened. Fold in chestnut puree. 3.Meanwhile, sprinkle the gelatin over the cold water in a small bowl. When the gelatin has absorbed the water and the custard is thickened, whisk the gelatin into the cream and eggs mixture. Refrigerate until firm. 4. Break up the firmed custard with some vigorous stirring. Beat the egg whites until stiff and whip the remaining cream. Fold the macerated fruits (with the rum), the whipped cream and the beaten egg whites into the chestnut custard mixture. Pour into the prepared pie shell. 5. Chill until firm, and garnish with curls of chocolate.

why would apples not be available in the winter? There were/are numerous varieties known for having long storage times, they would ripen late in the autumn and keep until spring when kept cool and dark. Some, such as the Winesap, were nearly inedible when picked but 1-2 months after picking they would develop a fine flavor but retain their firmness (a fully aged Winesap makes incredible applesauce). My great grandfather used to buy bushels of Northern Spy apples in November, put them in the root cellar, and they would just be finishing them up around March.

Two comments about this content: 1.) How could anyone omit mincemeat from a mincemeat pie? Growing up, we were NEVER allowed to eat mincemeat pie because it was made with suet--the MEAT that is minced. Without it, it's more like "mock mincemeat pie." 2.) Black Bottom Pie is my favorite in this compendium, although I only ate it a few times back in the 70s and early 80s--mainly found at Waffle House! Yessir, that breakfast greasy spoon baked the BEST PIE EVER!

Just going to mention this but "FEWER," not "less." Not "less people" but "fewer people"; not "less bakeries" but "fewer bakeries." I know it's becoming more and more common but the two words are NOT interchangeable. "Fewer" should be used with countable nouns. The problem is most likely because the opposite of both is "more." "Just eat fewer cookies every day as part of your diet and you'll be okay" as opposed to "Your boss is mad because you're putting in less effort than your co-workers." By comparison, "Eating more cookies means more exercise for you." It's just a peeve and the misuse needs to stop.

They aren't hard at all. You line a pie pan with crust, make up a bunch of brown sugar crumbs, make a hot liquid of molasses, water, and baking soda. You pour the hot liquid in the pie crust, and then drop handfuls of the crumbs into the liquid. If you want it to be dry bottom, gently stir the first few handfuls into the liquid. If you want it to be wet bottom, just leave the crumbs floating on the liquid. I used to bake them all the time until I developed food allergies. Now my daughter bakes them for herself and her dad, as I can't do it anymore. There is a recipe in the Mennonite Community Cookbook, but I'm sure you can find one online.

Im told its a state by state thing, now, but since the English say the bushes are quite happy running feral, im sure a lot of our rural cousins still know them and just dont share ! 🤪

I have had shoofly pie and mincemeat pies at my Aunt's house for Thanksgiving and Christmas during her lifetime. Which was way too short. Her pies were the highlight of the meals. Not store bought ones. Real honest to goodness from scratch homemade pies. Mince pies with mincemeat. She did cut one corner and bought Nonesuch for the fruit part. You cannot even find it in stores anymore. Sad. I did manage to get my old fashioned recipe book from a seller on Ebay. At least now I got an authentic recipe again. Got to get a crock and make a batch. Then can it. Wish I had inherited her recipe box. Wish I had my mother's, too. Sadly, a lot of that got disposed of by my ignorant family. She promised me I would inherit her cookbooks and recipe box. That promise was made when I was a young teenager. Some of my ancestry is from Pennsylvania settlers. Quakers. So, now it makes sense if that is where Shoofly pie came from. Aunt Pudd's table was laden with awesome pies and other goodies, she kept the family traditions alive and sadly when she passed they were lost.

I do believe the golden raisins have more of a fruit flavor. The next time she made one she left the raisins out. What a surprise. Really enjoyed it.

Funny thing, tomatoes are actually a fruit - the criteria being they grow on a vine. Avocado is also a fruit as it grows on a tree. Love tomato pie as well. I've had avocado ice cream, too - yum!! Both "fruits" can be sweet or savory and that is why I believe they are God's little cooking/baking miracles.

I've made green tomato pie. The recipe I found used golden raisins, crystallized ginger, lemon juice, and lemon peel.

I never heard of grapefruit merengue pie...interesting. And what do you suppose caused chess pie to be given that name? Green tomato pie..hmmm. This is one of your best videos, it's got so many pies I never heard of - and I am a life-long pie-baker.

Mince meat pie is still going strong in the UK at Christmas time. It is now an individual serving pie and doesn't contain any meat. A pie with minced meat ( ground beef to our American cousins ) in it is called a mince and onion, or whatever else is in the pie ( but only one named extra ). Mince and potato.

Many of these "lost" pies still are served in diners, pie shops, homes and fairs. Some are regional, some national, but they are still around.

Mincemeat pies (aka Mince Pies) are a Christmas staple here in the UK, but ours are made much smaller (2-3 inches diameter) so you can eat them in a couple of bites....usually we dust them with caster sugar or icing sugar and for a really rich treat, eat them warm with some brandy butter. Fun fact: even British people often mispronounce "Marlborough" unless they're from the town itself or the area near it....it's pronounced like "Mall-brah" as opposed to "Marl-burra" or "Marl-borro".

Here in Southern Illinois we have what they call a white pie. It's pretty delicious. It's like a vanilla custard, but fluffier because it has whipped egg whites mixed in. It's a favorite at Burton's Cafe in Whittington, IL.

Obviously you don’t live near an Amish community. Anyone who lives within 75 miles of an Amish area can get shoofly pie anywhere. Just had some 2 weeks ago. Try it warmed up it’s great.

Mincemeat is still eaten at Xmas in England, shops full of them, but they no longer contain actual meat. Just the other ingredients. The original old recipe was with meat, I suppose it was taken to America with the settlers.
