Tollen's reagent is used for the oxidation of any type of aldehydes, while Benedict's reagent is used for the oxidation of aldehydes with a neighboring OH group. Also, because Benedict's reagent is used to determine the presence of glucose in urine or blood, this test is more commonly used for sugars. I hope this helps!
