20,000 Leagues Under the Sea History Is Celebrated | Walt Disney World
Ойын-сауық
Many of you may recognize that the area occupied by the new Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid attraction was formerly the location of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, an attraction that closed in 1994. di.sn/60024L20
Here's the surprise: Before 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was dismantled, our Imagineers saved some of the attraction's water in carefully labeled bottles and kept them safe at their Florida headquarters for the past 18 years. Yesterday, those bottles were opened for the first time. In this video, watch as Imagineer Chris Kelly leads a small group of bloggers in returning a piece of the past to New Fantasyland - simply amazing! Read more at the Disney Parks Blog: bit.ly/PQP9q9

What a great way to remember the Magic Kingdom's heritage.
Long lived 20,000 leagues under the sea rest in peace RIP 😭
Wow, the new LIttle Mermaid area turned out so much better than I thought it would. Amazing!
Wow! Disney is actually recognizing 20K the Ride is some sort of official capacity? I'm shocked! They still have yet to even give an official reason as to why it closed & it has been nearly 20 years.
So they did away with Pooh's playland & recently did this project as shown in the video? Just seeing the caves & the water coming off of them & that area is like a tease, wishing the submarines were still there & like it once was.
So there's been a barrel of water sitting around somewhere since 1994...
Wonderful, can't wait to see it in Dec...altho getting reservations at Be Our Guest even the split second reservations were allowed, has proved impossible. Still miss 20,000, glad I was able to see it when it was brand new! Hugs- April
I'm afraid they didn't. Every piece of 20K was ripped out save for a tiny section of concrete wall from the show building.
I find it remarkably full of foresight...but then again, Disney understands their fans, and their history.
Hey, that water is historic. Anyone else think 20k was amazing?
He is right, albeit brusque. That was a long standing rumor but the truth is that it was a variety of factors. To steal from allears.net it was closed: "because of constant ride breakdowns, loading difficulties (the subs were not handicapped-accessible), long lines, and the difficulty and high costs of maintenance (including keeping 11.5 million gallons of water clear enough for guests to see through)."
I saw the cups and I was like "Are they going to drink it?"
I cannot wait to visit Disney again to see the new area. Super excited!
it was on soft opening which means it may or may not be open at any given time to test everything out with guests. they are now doing passholder previews and it will then remain closed until December 6th. At least that's what I heard.
It's like a watered down version [pun intended] of the opening of "it's a small world" at Disneyland, after the fair, when they had water from "every nation of the world" poured into the flume.
I thought that the submarine on this ride was horrifying. It just scared the living crap out of me
I like this. It's nice after seeing what they did to the Country Bears that they still honor Disney theme park history
I'm sorry but I gotta call Shennanigans on this one....there's NO WAY Disney saved water from a ride that was closed in 1994. I know Disney loves to save things but I sincerly doubt they said "Hey, let's save a few glasses of the water, so we can use it later for whatever we have planned later"
I still won't forgive them for removing 20,000 Leagues in the first place.
Yeah, I agree.
I think because of a leaky gas main that ran under the lagoon that couldn't be fixed without tearing up alot of concrete.
*pours water from the 20,000 leagues under the sea lagoon into ariel's grotto* Explosion
Again, that's just fan speculation to fill a vaccum of communication from Disney. The ride was not particularly difficult to load with a slick crew, including even with the disabled, and Disney barely spent anything on maintaining it in his final years.
I'm glad they saved Disney Legend Fred Joergers Rockwork and water falls from the original 20.000 Leagues attraction. Now if they could save his River Country Rockwork with slides, falls, and flumes. Knot's Berry Farm just restored their original Log Flume Ride, and it would be great to see Florida's first themed Flume ride restored in River Country.
Got to see the new fantasyland during the soft opening. Cinnamon rolls were so good. It was not open next morning for breakfast. I felt like punching the moose in the nose.
To have the opportunity to drink from the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea lagoon in 2012 and they pour it in Ariels Grotto. Ridiculous...
So is the New Fantasyland open now? I thought they said early Dec?
They kept the water from the old ride?
I never went on the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ride. But it sounds like a pretty cool ride. I wonder why they got rid of it?

maintenance costs.
It's at 0:34 in the youtube video Mr Toad In Pooh Ride - watch?v=Hp8tJzYaC_s (a picture of Toad handing over the deed to his ride to Owl.)
I doubt that it was probably tap water
It's in previews
not really. Imagineers save stuff from extinct attractions all the time
I find it odd that some of the water was saved. . . anyone else ?
two Disney villains dislike it.
Disneyland had Bigger Fish fighting to save it at that time, and won out over the Sharks. Walt Disney World had the better submarines in Disney Legend Harper Goff's original movie designed Nautilus's inputted by Disney Ride vehicle Designer George McGinnis. It's great that Disney Legend Fred Joerger's rockwork and waterfalls are still in place.
Not really. Its really a Disneyish type of thing. Its all about history and story.
Why is Disneyland's still open?

they dont have one.
Maybe it was from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at Disneyland. I mean, it's basically still there, just remodeled into Nemo's Submarine Voyage. The water there as far as I know has never been tampered with and it's the original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It opened in 1959, the same year as the Matterhorn.
Nope
Yea. I don't buy it.
