One of the hazards I discovered related to my eyes. Glasses with lenses that short. They allow me to look under them when looking down. Refraction causes the ground through the glasses and ground below lenses appear to be two different locations. If aiming for one spot as it passes under the edge of the lens, can cause a missed step. Rocks, curbs, etc.
I just read a study that said that the elderly lose their depth perception and that contributes to falls.

lol I lost my depth perception a looong time ago. I was born visually impaired. I got used to it and have learned how to use a white cane as a child as well as learned to use visual clues in my environment. Such as using shadows if they are available.
I was falling a lot the last 2 years. I’m 77 but for years I have had peripheral neuropathy. My legs are weak and my back and hip from arthritis. My neighbor said as she watched me walk away she saw one foot hitting the heal of my other foot. I use a walker now and I don’t fall. Just to let you know. I love watching yall.

We wish more people would use walkers when they need it, they are a great stability source that can help prevent a lot of issues that falling can cause!

A lot of it is tripping and then losing balance. Glasses that are blocking peripheral vision, making you clumsy, medication for high blood pressure can make you unsteady so if you do trip, you may completely lose balance. I started a new BP medication and caught my toe on something, and I free fell into the tub, luckily I caught myself with my hand on the wall of the shower and didn't break my wrist, I couldn't believe it just happened, it was shocking.

Very helpful info. Mid-sixties. I do a lot of calf raises and other leg exercises. It definitely makes me more stable and makes it harder to fall. Currently, I've been up on my roof replacing a large section of it with new shingles. I'm always roped in for safety. The leg exercises that I've been doing help tremendously.

I think they’re talking about the real elderly like in their 80s but I find I have fallen twice because I do not gauge my declining abilities I was tired one day I wanted to make cookies for the grandkids to fill up my cookie jar. I’ve had been outside all day working I used to be able to keep going when I was younger and I told myself I’m tired. I really shouldn’t do this now, but I continued on. I caught my foot in the lower cabinet doors underneath my foot got caught in that door if I would have rested it wouldn’t have happened. Another time I had my grandchildren over and they were sitting in my recliner and I was helping adjust them and was gonna push the foot rest back and just lifted up my foot while I’m standing and kicked the foot rest in well it didn’t click it justpushed right back and sent me flying backwards, I hurt my back terribly. I didn’t break anything. that was another miss calculation of my abilities. I probably could’ve done that with no problem in my 40s may be in my 50s but I’m 68 now I am still very active but I need to know my limitations and pace myself.

Thanks Bob & Mike (@ Bob & Brad). Great reminders & exercises for CALF muscles, and never thought about the great / big TOE. Even athletic SHOES with good soles & arch support - many these days are made with woven fabric. And some are not strongly woven on top, so the sides of your feet move or slide a little - even when you try different widths.

Many years ago my grandma came to live with us over summer. Since I was out of school I was her caregiver during the day. Her physical therapist would come to the house to work with her. I remember doing that first exercise with her. She was good about doing her exercises everyday. I just asked her to wait until I was at least in the same room in case she fell. In the beginning she had to hold onto the counter. In no time she progressed to touching one finger from both of her hands to one finger on each of my hands. At that point I knew she was good to go do these on her own.

I totally believe the research you mentioned. I am 60. I slipped while walking along hilly paddock and broke my tibia and fibula 3 years ago. I have an IM nail. I recovered fine except a little nerve damage where one of the ankle screws is. This has caused me a slight weakness in my toes. I have trouble extending them and spreading. Only a little trouble. But 3 years down the track, there is some muscle loss and my foot is noticeably thinner. I did physio for 3 months after the boot came off, and I've added your exercises since, all your falls prevention routines. But I still have balance problems and I believe the results of your study. It's because I have poor control of my toes and my foot since this accident. I have been focusing on toe exercises and foot strengthening for a couple of months now and noticed an improvement in my balance. I will follow the routine you've posted now. Love your channel and you guys. Special hugs for Bob!

WHAT'S THE BEST XERCISE FOR THE ACHILLES
Another question: my mom, who is 94, often trips. She can trip over air. Last year, she tripped over the threshold of the elevator in her apartment building & ended up breaking her femur. The most recent fall was in the grocery store, where she tripped & fell while walking on the rubberized mat at the entrance. She’s very badly bruised, but thankfully nothing broken this time. Her doc advised PT to help with balance, but she doesn’t think her health plan would cover the cost because of the extensive PT from last year. What kind of exercises can you recommend for this 94 year old klutz?

Sorry to hear that. My sister in law has MS (fairly mild, slow progression) and peripheral neuropathy because of it. She tripped for no reason when getting out of her car and broke her hip at 51 years old too. Managed to get herself back into her car and drive herself to hospital! She's fully recovered now but it took a year. Then she broke a metatarsal. Neuropathy is tough. I've had 3 falls over the years just walking and broke a shoulder, a compound fracture of the radius and cubitus, and finally tibia and fibula. My husband says I shouldn't be allowed outside on my own.🤣or only get around in a zorb!

I have a bunion on my left great toe...it lays to the left and I've noticed when I'm walking in shoes like sandals it's worse. Also I tend to 'run' to the left like a car whose front end is out of alignment. I have some balance issues, blamed on vestibular migraine but I'm wondering if the toe is causing the balance issues. I noted when I did the toe exercise it was harder to extend the left toes...I can get great extension against the wall but it puts a lot of pressure on the the bone/bunion, feels like it's aggravate that bunion. Have not idea what to do about the bunion..it's gotten worse over the years...I'm 74 now and not sure if surgery would be worth having, although I am concerned about mobility..to me it's at the top of the list along with memory/the brain when it comes to aging well and remaining ambulatory and independent.
Great information, guys. I unfortunately have RA, and my feet and toes are severely affected. I can't do any of these exercises, but I have been working on my balance. Poor balance is also a big reason for falls, so maybe a video to improve balance. My mom would fall from time to time, but she fell like a champ. She never got hurt because she told me as soon as she felt herself falling she relaxed her body and she almost always fell down on her backside where she had some extra padding 😂 My father-in-law on the other hand always tensed up and would seriously hurt himself. It's not easy, but when I fall, I too try to relax my muscles and never brace myself with my hands.
