In 2's complement the number range is 01111111 (127) to 10000000 (-128), therefor any binary number with a '1' as the most significant bit (left most digit in the 128 column) is a negative number. Hence you start counting from -128. Largest Positive Number: 127 (01111111) Smallest Negative Number: -128 (10000000) Zero is Always Zero: 0 (00000000) Minus One (Just before 0): -1 (11111111) You'll notice the number range is -128 to +127, this is because the number 0 takes a space from the positive number range. So 127 would be: 128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 = 64+32+16+8+4+2+1 = 127 And 57 would be: 128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 1 = 32+16+8+1 = 57 And - 94 would be 128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1 1 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 = -128+32+2 = -94 (so because there's a '1' in the 128 column, the number starts as a negative number, then we add on, so -128 + 32 = -96, -92 + 2 = -94) Hope that's of some help to anyone else finding this! :)

Im trying to convert 10110111 Into 2's complement and when i get the decimal answer its -73. i convert that to 73 then put it into binary but at the end of it i keep on getting 10110110 and i dont know where im going wrong...? Hi, So to go from -73 to binary Step 1: Covert the +'ve 73 into binary 128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 Step 2: Flip above (1'2 become 0's, 0's become 1's) 128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1 1 0 1 1 0 1 1 0 Step 3: Add 1 to step 2 1 0 1 1 0 1 1 0 + 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 ___________________________________________ = 1 0 1 1 0 1 1 1
