To cut straight lines, clamp pieces of 1x2 pine and use it for a guide. For really straight lines a circular saw works better than the saw you used.

If you haven't already done so, may I suggest weighing your vehicle pre-build. I did so with mine, and then again once the build was complete so that I knew how much weight I had added with the build out, water, batteries, ect, as well as making sure I wasn't overweight for the chassis. I was able to weigh mine at a truck stop, that had a certified weigh scale. It cost me about $6. Another suggestion would be to measure your rear wheel ride height, prebuild, from say ground, to top of wheel well in the rear. Mine, since the build out, has squatted a lot, and I am now looking into installing a helper spring, to give me a couple more inches of ride height, as well as increased capacity.

Yeah, check out how much weight you are allowed on the highway. Several states allow a maximum of GVW of 18,000 lbs. if you want to travel to Canada (to get to Alaska), BC would want you GVW to be under 5,500 kg. You could take the ferry between Alaska and Bellingham but that is pricy….

@@marlenesewell8492 She might be collecting a lot of furniture in her new home. Some of those DOT officials may not even give her a break if she is over the limit. Adding insulation, the density of wood used in construction of living areas, a toilet and water tank, electronics: heating and cooling equipment, solar panels, all that weight eventually adds up. The DOT doesn't like their highways wrecked by trucks carrying heavy loads. All I'm saying that it's a good idea to know how much additional weight she can carry before the DOT pulls her over. KZreadr Forestry Forest has a smaller van than her but he has mentioned that he is wary of how close he is to the upper weight limit the RCMP (DOT) allows on the highways. Yeah, he does have a woodstove but it's necessary for -40F winters.

I am 37, and had to use what little I had saved for retirement. A box truck is where I'm headed and I'm excited for the journey. I drove semi trucks for about a year just because I was in love with the tiny house idea (and the company paid for the school, so why not?). Living in the small sleeper in the back was already like a micro-apartment. I had an APU (diesel generator), heater and A/C, an inverter with a fridge cooler and my laptop, TV ... I didn't feel I was missing out on anything. Having to park at truck stops, and by using the same brand, Loves or Flying J, loyally rewards you with free nicely maintained showers. ...The space in a box will be larger than my California bedroom at 10x11, so I'm for it! Good luck builders!

Maybe you’ve already done it but I would insulate the empty space between the front wall panels too. It’ll help keep the living area warmer and reduce the noise from the outside world. Also I’m not sure the walls, floor, or ceiling are insulated so keep that in mind while you’re building. Might even shed some weight by removing the wood rub strips and installing lighter panel material in place of what’s in there now. Good luck, and stay safe.

You have already learned so much about life over the last two years, you couldn’t have got anywhere else. What ever you choose to do, I’m sure you’ll continue to extract value from it. Having earplugs, especially in that enclosed space, really helps. You don't need to buy them - a roll of toilet paper works really well (2 sheets, folded, rolled, and stuffed in your ear eliminates all the harsh frequencies). Also makes the construction more enjoyable, and thus, better quality results, because you're not trying to rush through the noise. A door between the front and back is a must, especially since you're living in it, and by yourself. If someone breaks into the front, gets the engine running, they can then place a lock on the outside "garage door" , and pretty much take you wherever they want to. Or if someone's breaking in from the back, you're a sitting duck. Aside from that, have fun and figure things out. Nothing like building your own custom thing, tailored to your exact specs!

Hi Mariah. Just a somewhat wild thought for the future. Some people buy houses, renovate them and sell them. Perhaps you could, in the future, alternate six months on the road with six months fitting out a van. One then hopefully would fund the other and all you learn doing your first build won't be a one off that isn't fully utilized again. The idea came to me at the beginning of this video when you had an expression of pure joy on your face after removing the middle seat in the cabin. You have already made some dreams become reality, so, why not?

Fun channel. Just discovered . You will succeed with the box truck project. Good work. Advice- For anyone traveling in a vehicle, get spare keys made that you can stash under the truck. Use zip ties or wire. Do not use magnet key boxes, they will fall off. Spare keys may save you from the elements some day. I was camping at Mammoth lakes when my son tossed me the car keys while we were fishing off a bridge. Yup, into the lake they went. Oh my. You have, basically, everything to learn. I would say, don't rush this. Research every minute you're not doing something. Even just home builds or automotive work. With something like this, you're going to need knowledge of all fields of construction and mechanics (not just auto) except concrete. I remodeled my mothers entire house completely including tearing out exterior walls from knowing nothing and learning from KZread. You're on the same platform that can teach you everything you need to know to do this and it not only look good but function and last. And, that gasket.. I wouldn't have done it that way. But, it's your project, I wish you well.

So so so happy you built that little escape hatch thank God lol! You're such an inspiration and if you can make a living doing this then do it to it sistuh! I was looking today at something Amazon was advertising for rv'ers. I'm getting close to retiring and my bus is pretty much ready. I just got to do a few more things.. I only want to travel and follow the weather because I don't want to get rid of my house quite yet. I may never get rid of it because it was my grandma's. I'm just a sentimental fool. Anyway there's a whole site for jobs for people who live in there Vans, RV's, cars All that jazz. You can work while you're on the road and I've been looking into that because I don't know what the heck I can do on the computer lol! You're an inspiration... keep on keeping on girly. I can't wait to see what you do with this box truck. It is going to be fabulous I am sure 😁❤️

Congratulations. There is a book I read, long ago, called "On Becoming A Person". A person to me is someone who does not need to plan things, but knows they have the capability to deal with uncertainty, chaos, problems and failure. Having watched many of your old videos, I am so impressed by what you are doing now. And without conscious thought, I now think you have become a person in some special way! So congratulations!

Have had a camper in various forms for about a decade now. What I learned..... Always take your time in adding stuff. Rather than drilling a hole at first I like to use double sided tape or a glue gun and make sure it all fits the way I like FIRST (I have a ton of holes in my camper from not doing this). (You did good). Try to take one thing out for everything you put in. I have made a ton more storage by removing stuff I never use. Add handles and grab bars - might just be me, but I have added a ton of handles to my camper which are really helpful in getting out of bed (over the cab) and for hanging lights and drying towels. Don't skimp on mechanical maintenance. I have gone 170k miles without a breakdown by making sure everything is up to snuff before I go. I can do most of it myself (not everyone can), but I am not afraid to take it to pro when I need to. It sucks to have pay for a major repair, but it is way cheaper then having to pay a tow bill. Plus good maintenance can save you gas cause the engine runs better. Be friendly, but don't trust anyone until you know them. Good tip I got early on was learning to refer say "yeah WE might go over there" or "We are heading that way" - always used the plural that way they don't know you are alone. If something feels wrong - just leave. Have fun.

One option you might want to think about is to build modular sections that can latch in and out securely. It's much easier to build since you focus on only one small part at a time. You can have electric link up between them with simple extension cords behind the units instead of running wires everywhere. This is of course build after insulation and paneling is put up. For example the entire kitchen section can be one modular unit you can take in and out. Or move it to another section if the grey water tank is under the sink in that unit. Storage and closets on yet another detachable section. _(The bath and shower not so much due to drain systems most require. But there are ways to make it modular too with a bit of creativity and detachable flexible hoses.)_ It makes van life so much easier to have options like that. It makes back tracking in the build process much less of an issue as well. So you don't have to tear apart a wall to put in something you forgot about. It's also handy if you need to remove everything and have a nearly empty truck for some odd reason. _(Maybe don't tell friends about that or they will have you move them every few years)_ But if you get a mouse living in the place, which does happen, it's much easier to kick him out when he can't hide.

Oh girl I SO needed to see this episode! My truck, Cora, was a partial build in that it had a side door, steps and a couple windows when I got her. Among other starts we trashed!!! I want a pass through, which is what I miss most from my ambulance conversion. However, I’m in my 60’s and no longer a smallish nor nimble woman!!! As well, I have a F-350 so a truck cab which the bench seat was removed and seats installed instead. Now to fit between that narrow space… but you’re inspiring me to proceed

I always thought that after I graduated in 2018 that I'd go to college and pursue a degree in nursing (not because I wanted to, but I felt I had to choose something and it was the closes thing to herbal medicine). Anyway, after two years I felt the holy spirit leading me in a different direction, so I dropped out and started my business which has been slow with a lot of learning, but all great things take time we just have to have faith, and determination. Just wanted to say I'm really proud of you and your courage on this journey.

Look at glass boat hatches for uour roof. An excellent source of natural light and ventilation. Additionally, they give roof access from inside and an additional escape hatch. Also, some rv side windows have emergency removal handles.

Second the boat or RV style roof hatch. Great for ventilation and access plus with the small space they provide ample natural light. I skipped side windows. With the hatch up and whole rear open you get to take in the outdoors full bore. With the back closed, the hatch still makes the box light and airy without putting any business in the street

Great work Mariah! ❤ Great show a home run! You can drill through to identify the location of your final cuts to save yourself some time cutting. Holesaw bits. Install a couple deadbolts in your new door if you want. Really Important! Stay below the GVW for your Vehicle with your build. Beefing up your rear suspension will not save your engine and transmission from the additional weight and cause early failure.

Mariah, I'm sure you've probably already thought of this, but when you sleep at night, lock out the outside door lock by using a padlock so another can't be used to lock you in. Also put a slide bolt on the inside of the door so you are secure inside. Stay safe girl.
