As a seed production company, we have to do things on a large scale. That means we're usually doing what's easiest and most efficient, and that has almost always meant growing plants in the ground.
This year, I switched things up a little in our small garden because I was pregnant or holding baby Dezi. Getting down to the ground was a little tough, so I planted in pots more than usual.
For those of you who garden in small spaces, can't dig in the ground, or have really terrible soil, this video is made for you! Even if you can plant in-ground, growing in pots or raised beds can definitely have some advantages.
First off, it's easy to ensure you have really good soil in a pot instead of a whole area. You can carry a bag or two much more easily than getting a truckbed full of soil and compost.
In these pots, I used quality potting mix, compost, manure, and granular fertilizer. These are all super helpful to get the plants off to a good start as well as well-fed over time.
I love using liquid fertilizer in the garden, but you have to be careful when using it on potting plants. It will want to run right through the soil and out the bottom, so be sure to not water too much and to capture the liquid with a pan.
Pots are also great because you can move them! Depending on the time of the year or plants you're growing, you can get your plants into the area that gives them optimal sunlight.
One potential downside is that you do need to be especially aware of the moisture in your soil. Pots will usually dry out much more quickly than the ground, so check them often. There is more airflow and less soil.
So what should you plant in pots?
Really, almost anything is fair game. You'll probably have more success with some crops more than others, though.
Leafy green varieties are a great option since they're easy to sow, maintain, and harvest. Herbs are another popular option and something I recommend. Plus, you can move the pots closer to your kitchen! Mint is really popular for pots to contain plants. Other good options are small plants, like radishes or carrots.
