Seeing you in the mud and the wet tells me you haven't yet used a tip very common in South Africa - shade cloth. When camping, we use a thick shade cloth as a ground sheet. Being woven polypropylene, it does not dam up, but allows you a relatively mud-free floor inside your tent and outside to wipe your boots on. Buy a piece slightly larger than the footprint of your tent and tarp. Peg it down to the ground using nails and fender washers, then pitch your tent etc. It lets you keep the inside free of leaves and sticks. When you break camp, use it as a surface to roll up and pack up. It is the last thing to roll up and tie to your backpack. It is lightweight and easy to wash off back home or on the trail.

Of all the camping/tent videos I’ve watched (100’s) you are the first person to dig a rain water trench…the first thing you learned in the army (1967) when you put your Army issue pup tent up…well done

Hello. Thank you. Yes, it is important to dig a water ditch around the tent to prevent water from entering the tent.

I'm very glad that I'm not the only one who treats his dog like this (little talking, clear acoustic and visual signals, allowing him to get to know all your activities in the camp) and doesn't believe in the nonsense that the dog doesn't have to eat before his human. My dog will be 15 years old in a few days (so I enjoy seeing your still young dog very much) and has all the limitations imaginable at that age... So hiking is no longer an option, even if he really loved it. He's even earned a "dog walking medal" that now adorns his collar. I will now try kayaking or bike tours where my dog can just sit on board and enjoy being close to me; he weighs only 10 kg, so he can ride in the front basket. Those who look closely can see some "boy scout tricks". 😆 But rain like this is always a bit depressing, even if you can protect yourself well. And with a dog, it's always a bit more difficult. Coffee and biscuits are good moral support! 😊 In similar situations, I like to bake rolls, which I then smear with jam and enjoy with my coffee - the warmth gives me the strength to brave the rain. 😉 Seeing your moped was a surprise! I didn't expect this vehicle. 😮

A tent without a floor is an automatic no-no for me. And since I've found the small stoves, I'm never going to rely on a campfire. I now enjoy my time camping.

Not really much of a camper yet. Mostly watched alot cause I find it cozy but have the urge to wanna go real bad. So I may change my tune after but to me cooking on a campfire feels like the only way to cook while camping. Tent without a floor has its charm but I feel like the floor is just too practical for bad weather

Well….what I’ve learned after camping and bushcrafting for the better part 4 decades is that there’s a million ways to enjoy the outdoors. I actually thought that this guy had a nice little setup for him and the pup. Looks to me like they both ate well and slept well and rode out a monster storm with no major problems….kept a cheery flame going for cookies and coffee in the late night despite a virtual torrent around them….nice bit of communing with the wild. 👍

I think I would have use a little bit of a bigger tarp for the front of my tent & would have set the fire up underneath to get some of the warmth of it in the tent because we all know that rain brings in a cold front & its awful to be rainy & cold , just saying , nice job on digging the trench for the rain , seen that in the movie Open Range , it’s nice to do when setting up on a hill .

Great video! Back in the day, I loved tent camping in the rain, but preferred closed in tents. Now I like it in the camper in the rain, but still cook outside under an awning or canopy out of the rain.

That puppy is interested in everything: the world's all new. And got some big paws to grow into. Always good to have a companion for camping. I also like the heavy tarpaulin: the lightweight ones always seem to get a film of water on the inside. Good idea with the surrounding trench: a lot of people forget about water flowing over the ground into their "dry" campsite.

Great video nothing better in life to get out in the wild away from people and all the stress of life .I always try getting out even in winter rain snow etc its so good for the sole.love the dog by the way.

Agree he sure did pick the absolute worst location and I don’t think he did this in order to challenge himself. He did not consider the fact that he picked a camp site at the bottom of a hill where the expected rain would flow down hill. That like saying I put my tent under two trees which both were widow makers and in the morning he realized that having two trees fall on his tent could have killed him and his dog, was just a lesson and doing things with difficulty makes for a good learning experience. Not much of learning experience when your dead!

It is good you feed your gorgeous pup when you eat - it makes it so much easier for both so that puppy is not salivating while you eat. Good thinking digging the drain around your tent, imagine what could of happened. Lots of water and gusty windy conditions - good you both did not suffer too much in such wet conditions.
