2 Common Problems When Acrylic Pouring
Ойын-сауық
In this video I cover common problems I've seen with acrylic pouring, which are paint consistancy (too thick or too thin) and simply not using enough paint. I recommend using about 1 ounce of paint for every 16 sq inches of canvas (this ratio has worked very well for me for quite some time).
Materials used:
Artist's Loft Flow Acrylics
Floetrol
Water

I like that you did a "too thin" one & a "too thick" demo, so people can actually SEE what happens when the paints aren't mixed to the desired consistency!! Thanks hon!:)

I just posted above. I DID this test, had the consistency right and the pour paint ended up so thin all the colors muddied. I'm wondering if its the base paint consistency, which is supposed to be a bit thinner than the colors?
I know the one with too little paint did not work out the way you would have liked - But, I loved the first try because it looked like the ocean smashing against a cliff - In my work, I would use it for background and carefully paint other elements into it to create a painting - Sometimes the mistakes can end up being amazing

Did you read the video title?😀
I can't thank you enough for all of your "how to" (& how not to!) videos!! I haven't done a pour before so, when awesome people like you post tutorials, I learn so much! Thanks again, it is truly appreciated!
Omg! I was literally about to give up with paint pouring but you have just shown exactly where I’m having problems - thank you thank you thank you!
Thank you for showing us how it is done. I've started acrylic pour the past few months and I'm hooked! Your channel is super relatable and easy to enjoy!
I hate it when I don't mix up enough paint. I'm not sure why you got two thumbs down. To me if you get a thumbs down you should say what you didn't like about it as opposed to just being negative without anything constructive occurring. It's very subjective in that it's your artwork and your opinions so what is there to be negative about. if you're not interested in it, don't watch. Personally, I love your videos. You cover a lot of common questions people have and make everything look so simple.
I honestly don't think I could function without your channel. You are the greatest teacher ever!
Oddly enough I really like the "too much" paint painting! Having said that, I have done all three. I love watching your videos because I always learn something from you. I watched MANY videos when I was getting ready to start my painting in June 2018. You and one other artist were my inspiration. Thank you so much for doing what you do.
Where were you a year ago. LOL Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us. Awesome as expected.
So glad I found this video (& your channel!) has helped me realise a few mistakes I’ve been making! I should be able to do some more decent pours now! Thank you Mixed Media Girl ☺️
Thank God for this video. Ive watched so many trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, & ur the only one I found who addressed it. I wasnt using enough paint. THANKU
I just did my first pour ever this morning after have watching a ton of your videos! I’m hosting a pour for my birthday on the 11th of January and I can proudly say my consistency is is on point! Thank you for all your information ! I have a new obsession! ❤️
Thank you so much! Last night, I made 2 new pictures. The whole goal was simply to try a couple of your suggestions as I’m over watering my paint mix and the design fades on the sides. I used you paint mixing ratios as well as your suggested amount of product total per canvas size. I am EXTREMELY pleased with the results! I also tried your trick of setting to canvas on top of another canvas that is still wrapped in plastic! The jury is still out if that recommendation! Thank you so much for all that you share. You are my number one go to girl for pour/flow painting instruction!!!
Thank you for sharing, being new to acrylic pouring I have had this happen to me, both too thick and too thin. I think I am getting better at it, but will keep watching your channel. Thanks again for helping out!
My 6 year old daughter and I love watching your videos! We tried our first acrylic pour tonight and they turned out so pretty!
You are an awesome teacher. I have learned so much from you. I can hardly wait to watch your other videos and try some of your 10 techniques. Thank you for sharing and your time.
Thanks Mixed Media Girl! I love your videos and this one is very informative. I appreciate it so much when people do videos like this one. Thanks again.
Lol I’m guilty of not having enough paint! Getting better at judging as I go! Thanks for the great info!
I absolutely love your channel and I have learned so much. I did my first few flow paintings using your techniques and then sent them to my artsy friend. She loved them!
This is SO kind and helpful! Thank you for posting!
Hi. Thanks for Acrylic Pouring 101. I am there right now. This is all new to me as I’m learning. Thanks for sharing. Mil🙂👍🏽
Thank you... Appreciate you showing us the differences... Very informative.
Thanks for showing this, consistancy is an issue I deal with, still new to this all, love your work.
Thank you...appreciate you sharing your wisdom and experience
Thanks for taking the time to do this. Very helpful.
Thank you for sharing your fantastic information. (Especially for us newbies) I am so glad I found your channel before I started spending money.
Thank you so much for this. Looking back, I can definitely see some of these mistakes...the mostly "too-thin" problem or just slightly under the right amount of paint. For me, it's still tricky, especially when I try out a thicker paint and then over-thin that one. This video has been so helpful!
Excellent topic! Thanks for the demos!💜
Thank you so much I have made all those mistakes and I think I'm ready to try it again but the right way
Great comparison video. Thank you ❤️🌞
Thanks for your informative videos. I always learn so much from you. . .you're a great teacher! Thanks again💕
Brilliant! Thank you so much for showing us these, I now know where I went wrong - too thick!! ☆☆☆☆☆
Yaaaayyyyyy finally a great video that was extremely useful. I FINALLY had my very 1st successful ring pour after watching this. I think I was just a little too thin with past attempts because they always started out looking perfect but then when it came time to tilt it I would lose all my lines and end up looking like just another pour. You videos were the very 1st ones I saw that got me immediately interested in painting and I finally found this video today so thank you so much for taking the time to explain & make the perfect tutorial !!!
Thank you so much for sharing, this is great advice for newbies like me to understand where I am going wrong and why my paintings don't work😭 Love watching your videos 💚💚
Thank you This helps a lot. It's been hit and miss for me. The hits have been great, so again I thank you.
Oh thank you! I just did my second poor last night and I realized I'm not consistent with how I mix the paint some are too thin some are too thick and it really shows when I pour those little teeny squiggly lines and other places there's really big lines the most of it's just really thin, the colors are gone. I did the small dish drainer.
Everything you do still turns out great looking!!
Very helpful, clear instruction! Thank you.
Hi M, thank you for sharing. I appreciate you going there for us! interesting to see and YOU using the paint vs. me using mine and making a colossal mistakes!
Thanks MMG. This was a good video for us rookies. Also thanks 4 the link to the paint mixing vid. Curious to see it as I do not use floetrol I use liquitex mixing medium. Much respect!
This was very helpful. Thanks!
Ok so mine have been too thin. I searched why is my paint pulling away from the edges and this was the first one up. Thank you.
This was perfect! I had a very kind and talented artist walk me through the process via DM's when I first started. This vid would have saved her some time and energy while she was helping me 😂😂😂😊❤
Gonna use this technique & paint figures out of the abstract shapes after it dries. It'll be a fun challenge. Thank you!
when I do a 8x10 I always remember to fill my cup up 2 1/2 times to get the right amount and it surely works!!
For the first time last night, my mix is getting closer to the correct path, thanks to your vid. I didn't add any water to the color mix before and couldn't make out why my paint was not flowy like others. The problem now is that... I think it's closer to the too thin. Going to try and fix it tonight.
thanks for the info!! wondered why I was having difficulties. my paint was too thick thanks again
This video really helped me to correct the mistake I made... Thankyou soo much :)
Thanks for this that's exactly what I'm doing wrong as well as not adding the glue or sylicon to maintain the shine thank you. Appreciate it.
Thank you so much! I'm doing mine too thin looking at your examples. Much appreciated x
This was SUPER helpful. I'm really thankful for this!
I actually like the feathering from your finger painting on the too thick! 😉🤣😂 Thank you for sharing this tips and pointers video!! 🤗😍🥰
That tree ring turned out gorgeous!!
Great tips!! I shared with a group I'm in because a lot of people ask about some of these problems.
Thank you for sharing Marcy👍♥️
REALLY great video, thanks so much.
Thank you! So easy to follow your teaching!❤️
Thank you so much for this video!! New to your channel, I am inspired to do another painting! Thank you so much for adding this post, I have struggled with getting the right consistency in my pours!I am definitely a new subscriber! Keep up the great work my friend!! 👍
Thank you .... I'm a beginner .. and I found this VERY helpful :)
Thank you 🙏. This helped a lot!!!😘
Super helpful! Thank you!!
thank you for this. would also appreciate an elaborate tutorial about strainer dirty pour since - having watched many failed ones and of course failing at it myself - it seems to be quite tricky.
This was so helpful thank you!
This was helpful. Thank you,
How useful! Thank you!
I love this comparison and wish I would have had a video like this a few months back when I first got started... I wasted so much paint making them too thin.... No I was trying to find the right amount to cover and keep shapes - Thanks Marcy for being so helpful to us people that are new....
Great video. Thank you!!
Thank you! very helpful .
Thanks. Lessons learned.
Ah- my paint consistency is too thick, which is why I’m getting those pinholes and cracking in my pours!! Thank you so much, super helpful! -❤️Art love from Chicago, IL! Leslie Newman, Melted Artworkx
Thank you for the advice!
Paint consistency = the biggest pain in pouring. Lol too thin mixes and goes muddy. Too thick, won't move and usually cracks. Thank you for this!!!!
I tend to underestimate how much paint I need for a canvas and it drives me nuts. Glad to have your guideline, now I'm sure I'll be able to get better results! Also, I really like how the canvas you did with too thick paint turned out. 😁

Thank you so much for this video!!! Super helpful!!!! :)
I do not know much about the mixes, ut I really wanted to try making one of these paintings. I saw in our local big box craft store a pre-mixed acrylic pouring paint set of colors called Galaxy Surge. Even with these mixed paints I did not know if it had the silicone drops in them and their website was not forthcoming. I went ahead and tried doing a flip cup pour, like the ones you did on the 1st 2 canvases. I used about 1/3 of each bottle color in my cup (the bottles are 6 oz), using 4 colors, white, navy, magenta and fuschia on an 8 x 10 canvas. It came out OK, nothing spectacular. I noticed that not only was a lot of oil was coming to the surface, but the paint was cracking as if I had covered it with some kind of crackle varnish to make it look vintage. I do not think I've seen that happen before in any of the dozens of videos I have watched on YT. Do you have any ideas of why that happened? I want to try more, but I am afraid it will happen again. People say they varnish their canvases, but with the mount of oil on this one, no varnish would ever stick to it. Hope you have an answer! Love your work by the way!
Valuable tutorials! Thanks heaps :-)
...Simply Beautiful !!! ... Very Talented !!! ... Greetings From The Art Academy...
Thanx so much for the help!💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
Great video and info.
Great videoi now know a bit more thankyou.
Very informative, as always
I found it very useful, thank you ! 🤍
Life saver!!
Great advice!
I saw someone say that if you take the dimensions of the canvas (8x10) and multiply them and then divide by 28 and that gives you the amount of ounces of paint you need. So for an 8x10 canvas I use a 3 ounce cup filled to the brim and a base coat and it works pretty well. But I’ve also just found that using a base coat makes things monumentally easier in terms of stretching.
I wish I would have seen this video yesterday. I was inspired by all of your beautiful art and I had watched one of your videos about mixing paint so I thought I was well prepared. Unfortunately, I added too much water... way too much water. Consequently the colors melted together in the cup and made this beautiful shade of Mudd paint. And I laughed. I will try again. But this time I will add less water. Thank you for sharing your art and your talent.
You have helped me solve my problem. Thanks so much
Thank you so much for these
Thanks for this video.
Stunning
Thank you for this vid !
Thank you for sharing.
Very informative thanks
Thank you! I’ve been using pre mixes because after buying flotrol and doing all the steps my paintings looked like trash and I could not find a reason or a resource that showed my problem. Turns out they were all too thin. I really appreciate you making this it’s going to save me a significant amount of money.
