2/4 What makes art valuable

First broadcast: 2011.
What makes a piece of art worth tens of millions dollars at auction? A number of things, but not always the things you'd think. BBC's The World's Most Expensive Paintings chronicles the world's ten most valuable paintings, by way of journalist Alastair Sooke's guided tour of the collectors, locales, and Christie's and Sotheby's auction houses that link these great pieces of art together.

Fascinating to observe Archer’s razor sharp tongue gradually dissecting this chap.

He's such a pompas ass!! Too bad he made money on his book, he doesn't deserve such beautiful artwork. He's such a vulgar little man.

No. I disagree For money, perhaps But i think the applause was in relief that the impending doom had been averted and that art buyers still had faith in the art industry.

Archer just seems like a lonely angry little man. Why would anyone want to hang out with someone so insulting?

A great dose of the reality of the elitist world packed into that one little interview. Alastair Sooke does a great job of showing the reality of the elitist Art world. The truth is that there is a multitude of extremely better art that most anyone can afford once one gets away from the politics the big money the notoriety the glamour Etc... I have a modest collection that I enjoy that's all that counts, in the end or to share it with friends.

@@ericswain4177 They are just a bunch of snobs, spending $80M on pond leaves or $70M on a few colored squares exactly because they are that stupid, have no style and just want to impress other snobs. As you've pointed out, there is actually plenty of good art one can afford. But for snobs it's about spending $100M on a pink square.
