Makes sense that a jeweler hid them and subsequently died without heirs. Rented a jeweler's house once and there was a built in recessed bookshelf that the bottom shelf would slide out with a hiding place beneath.

It’s great when a video or program is presented by someone who has a real passion and understanding of the subject. I’m not big into jewellery, except that with a sentimental value, but I really enjoyed this production.

I was thinking the same thing.. this show was a joke.. it obviously was a way for that jerk to promote his own business while using the name of the horde to get people to watch.. and on national tv no less.. talk about getting some free advertising.. what a twat..

While watching part 1 I was wondering whether it was buried during the civil war and couldn't understand why no one was mentioning it. Well, here it is! I reckon it's likely, to say the least, that whoever buried this treasure trove was protecting it from Cromwell's hordes.

Highly likely Elizabeth Ma'am, so much treasure was lost sub-surface, how about the Great Fire....? It is recorded that wealthy folk buried many valuables in their gardens...prior to fleeing....

In the years since this video was produced. the pieces have come together. The hoard was almost certainly buried by a jeweler commissioned by the crown; I believe his name was shown on a document in this program. He was the lease holder and didn't keep up his payments. Rather than forfeit the jewels to make payment he buried them, planning to return one day.

The emerald bottle/watch looks like it was cut out of a natural large Colombian emerald. Quite impressive. I think the narrator is wrong about some of the material of the scent bottle, insofar as it looks like the panels were carved in the shape of leaves from a particularly fine chalcedony, or a very translucent agate.

Hallmarking might have been a rort too. Hallmarks might have been delayed until an item was purchased. Hallmarking costs a percentage of value here now. Maybe they had that taxing Hallmark system, which would have been costly, when all of your worth is in jewellery stock
