2/17th Cavalry OH-58D Kiowa Warriors in Iraq

Ғылым және технология

OH-58 Kiowa is a family of single-engine, single-rotor, military helicopters used for observation, utility, and direct fire support. Bell Helicopter originally manufactured the OH-58 for the United States Army, based on the 206A JetRanger helicopter. The Kiowa has been in continuous use by the U.S. Army since 1969. The latest model, the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, is primarily operated in an armed reconnaissance role in support of ground troops. The OH-58 has been exported to Austria, Canada, Dominican Republic, Taiwan, and Saudi Arabia; as well as having been produced under license in Australia. The 'OH-58D (Bell Model 406) was the result of the Army Helicopter Improvement Program (AHIP). An upgraded transmission and engine gave the aircraft the power it needed for nap-of-the-earth flight profiles, and a four-bladed main rotor made it much quieter than the two-bladed OH-58C. The OH-58D introduced the most distinctive feature of the Kiowa family â a Mast-Mounted Sight (MMS) above the rotor system with a gyro-stabilized platform containing a TeleVision System (TVS), a Thermal Imaging System (TIS), and a Laser Range Finder/Designator (LRF/D). These new features gave the aircraft the additional mission capability of target acquisition and laser designation in both day or night, and in limited-visibility and adverse weather.

Really had to laugh @0:48 in the video when the reporter referred to the Apaches as "slow-moving", since the VNE on a Kiowa is only around 150 knots, while it's closer to 200 knots for an Apache. He then says the "fast and more maneuverable" Kiowas stayed in the fight. Well, it's a stretch to say the Kiowa is more maneuverable too -- about all you can say for sure is that it's smaller than the Apache ... and more prone to lose tail rotor authority. :-)) Love 2/17 Cav though -- best unit I EVER served in.

Dana Lewis, you were sold a bill of goods. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 No way an OH58 is “fast and more maneuverable” than an Apache, all day every day. The OH58 was the LAST aircraft chosen for a transition out of flight school for a reason. Do your homework, sir. You need to understand the actual mission of the OH58 vs the Apache. They are *not* comparable. I don’t care if you ARE the reporter. You are still wrong. -Signed: Proud Grad of the US Army Aviation School, former UH-1H and CH-47D pilot.

@@danachernault84 Okay, we’re mincing words a bit here. Kiowa is smaller and is undeniably quicker and more agile than the Apache. Not as fast in the top end, but it is more nimble. It’s much lighter. That’s like saying the OH-6 is less maneuverable than the Apache. They’re built for different roles.

The Apaches were grounded for part of this folks. Too expensive. Too noisy over urban areas. And the Kiowas flew on. My report here. And Schiller was awesome.

115 knots isn't all that slow my friend, espeically when you are 10 to 50 feet above the ground. Grant it they can't keep up with other empty aircraft but this is a scout helo. I could push my bird out and lift off w/ only me! Whereas the Apache must be towed out (with a tug or hummer) requiring at least a 3 man crew to ensure safety. When minutes count a scout is the best option followed by the heavier firepower as needed. There's more to war than witnessed in video games.

Stephen Fleming I may be wrong but I think that was the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment out of FT Polk then. I was in 2ACR in 03-04 in Baghdad (and other places) and our 4th squadron was OH58 -D air cav. Call sign sounds very familiar.

the more ammo the less fuel (meaning less range)... weight is the issue. Old school Cobra attack birds (what Apache's replaced) couldn't fly w/ a full loadout and full tank of fuel. It was a juggling act choosing range or firepower. More to flying than seen in a video game ;-)

We did have what was called a PDU or Pilot Display Unit, but it was right in front of the right seater's face so we never flew with them. We would either use a grease pencil during our weapons checks and mark the wind-screen or, like me, find a bug splatter that was close and use it as a reticle.

My fried you have no idea what you are talking about. Yes they have limited ammo but we are scouts not a conventional warfare asset. Tha Apache requires a massive ground crew to maintain as well (in comparison to the Kiowa's). I've never flown in the Delta models but the old school scouts did the job as intended. All the new tech just increased our capatibities. Now as far as the 58 instead of the Hughes 500...now that's crap and based on politics. Same engine in both but different airframe

Not only is the 58 a P.O.S. Compared to AH-64's, they hardly ever hit the shit they are shooting at, and are Winchester almost as soon as they pull the trigger!...They grit their teeth because their thinking "FUCK, I am going to be out of AMMO!"...Lets face the facts....their primary weapon system is their M-4's!
