Medan has many ethnicities. There are Chinese, Indian, Malay, Batak, Karo, Acehnese, Minang, Nias, Javanese, and other ethnicities from all over Indonesia. Because of the ethnic diversity, the culinary tastes are also diverse and rich in taste. Enjoy Medan and Enjoy North Sumatra. Greetings from Berastagi, Karo, North Sumatra.

Oh so you were there two weeks before Deepavali? If you asked her where she or her family came from, of course she’s going to say Indonesia. I guess you wanted her to say India, but for that you’d need to ask whether she was of Indian descent or not. But that’s a difficult task considering your current level of Indonesian. Semangat lagi belajar Bahasa Indonesianya! 💪 One tip is that we use both “bisa” and “boleh” but for different situations. In one where you’re asking whether you’re allowed to sit or not, it’s better to use “boleh” because “bisa” indicates your ability, and of course you’re able to sit down wherever you like. Enjoy Medan!

14:43 pretty sure she means her family (or at least herself) don't maintain any relations with their ancestors' homeland, not that she's not of Indian descent. White Americans do the same thing calling themselves true blue Americans even if their great grandfather was from Italy and their great great grandmother was from Ireland. It's that nationalism at play.
